Do I write a fanfiction first or just try my luck with an "original" one?

What's your goal? You might have a wider pool of readers and critiques if you write about an established universe. If your goal is to practice writing storylines and get lots of feedback on how to perfect your writing style and delivery, then starting with fanfiction might make more sense. If you have a strong idea and want feedback on character creation, overall plot, setting, etc, then an original story makes more sense.
