  1. My stance on the necessity of keeping Ran in the dark is that it's weakened. To start, there's a fanfic writer who summed it up the best in his story "Agasa, Ai, Shinichi, and Heiji all seem to think that if Ran finds out the secret then it would only be a matter of time before the Black Organization tracked them down and slaughtered them all. This would seem to imply that this would result because of Ran. How insulting is that? I can understand if they feel that Ran is not good at lying just as I understand why Holmes deceives Watson from time to time, but that doesn't mean I can't feel peeved on behalf of the characters being deceived." To back his and my stance up, I could see the importance of keeping Ran out of the loop when Agasa was the only person involved. But now, the insinuation is "Heiji, Haibara, my parents, Vermouth and Eisuke know who I am, but if Ran finds out, then we're all done for". Haibara mind you is in the same situation, and thus she couldn't be fooled into thinking that Conan and Shinichi are different people. But counting her and Agasa, 7 people discovered his secret, and the feared scenario hasn't happened yet. And well, if more characters find out, it only serves to make keeping her in the dark pointless.
  2. Mostly for fics not posted on the forum to begin with. For me it's The Mystery of Conan Edogawa by Funvince: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4553963/1/The_Mystery_of_Conan_Edogawa Now there are many fics concerning Ran finding out that Conan is Shinichi, and I find this one really well put together for several reasons: 1. Basically the story consists of Ran doing her own detective work to prove the connection between the two which I find does more justice to the character. 2. For the sake of drama, some tend to have Ran really hating Shinichi for the deception only to calm down by the end. Or on the other end of the spectrum we have her taking deception well and just mildly ticked off. Here, her reaction is well balanced. 3. The writer even makes it plausible that Ran never really dropped her suspicion despite Conan's misdirection. 4. Heck, we even get a nice parallel to the Sherlock Holmes stories (Final Problem and The Empty House). 5. There are some nice touches in general that get ignored in the canon. One example is how Ran and Kogoro don't question why Agasa for letting Ai live with him, when he claimed that he couldn't take care of Conan. Nothing earth shattering, but it is something you'd think would be brought up. Edit Note: Many fanfics can easily be poor in quality or average at best. Some even fail to feel like the series that the writer is basing the story on, so don't just recommend a fanfic. Specify why you think it stands out. What puts it above the others in your mind?
  3. Don't have an online pic, so to keep from cluttering up the page:
  4. Going under the premise that the authorities found out about her true id, and past actions, would she receive any leniency for helping to bring down the Organization?
  5. I prefer going to a store as it means getting out and socializing to and from the comic book/book store. But good work on the site.
  6. I buy the official Case Closed manga and read the unavailable volumes online until they become available.
  7. Thing is, for those saying the relationship possibly being icky, I almost agree. But that really depends on when they get romantic. If she were to develop a crush on him while both are kids, then yes, I can see it being awkward. But if she were to start looking at him that way when they are near adulthood (17 at the earliest) I can't really object to it too much.
  8. As I understand it, one factor that hurts the series is that it's middle ground. The murder mystery aspect automatically makes it inappropriate by US Standards, but at the same time, it's not intense enough to market it as an adult show.
  9. With that said, I wasn't looking to twist your words, though my response wasn't as well worded as I hoped (and I misunderstood some of which you were saying), so whether you want to respond is your call (Not that I can force you to respond anyway), I'm going to try to clarify my stance better by going back to the first post I responded to: Now going by the part I underlined, what I got from that bit is that the only way you can watch the story in it's original format is to watch it online, whereas I was arguing that the DVD sets also give you that option. As for why it's relevant to the subject, well, several folks passed on supporting the DVD because they didn't like the English Dub. So I felt it productive to point out that the DVDs give the option to watch it in the original language, thus having something for both Dub and Sub fans, and in turn giving them the incentive to buy it. With that said, I'm done as well.
  10. Hey, you asked why I would bother with the DVDs as opposed to catching them online, I was just answering.
  11. I'm going to apply this towards just about any anime or show: 1. Whenever possible, I prefer to have the show or episodes in a legal and official capacity. Now if I can't afford it for the moment or the show is unavailable in a legal capacity, then sure I'll do the online subs. Kind of like how the the dctp.ws site keeps up the manga scans until they legally become available in the US. 2. DVDs lack the loading problems had on computers from time to time. And sure while some sites do have a playlist feature, with DVDs you get to the next episode instantly (no lag).
  12. I'm at a loss as to what your problem with the DVDs is. The Case Closed DVDs give you the option to watch the subbed episodes with the original japanese language.
  13. Ok, but as I've said, the DVDs contain the Japanese track and the subtitles specifiy which is being said in the Japanese Version (with the honorifics and all), so the point you brought up should be a non-issue.
  14. I can agree that online petitions and fan pleads won't make a difference, but in the business world high sales tend to merit more products. Can you specifiy why you believe that high sales would be ineffective? Now yes, if things continue as they are and most products don't get purchase, then Case Closed is as good as over with the manga likely canceled. The Funimation DVDs contain the audio track for the the Japanese Version and the subtitles correspond with that, so you can still get the Japanese culture that you'd get from fansubs.
  15. Well if the DVDs available were to rise in sales and the manga volumes sold more, the likeliness would increase. Granted it's not a manga/anime and a slightly different scenario, Family Guy at the beginning of the 2000s was held in very little regard by Fox, but they gave it a DVD release regardless and the sales impressed Fox to the point that the show got a revival and for better or worse they tend to hold new animated shows to Family Guy standards. Now I will confess to not going for the DVDs, but in the case of a lengthy manga, I tend to do manga only and skip the anime for the most part as I don't want to pay too much to get the same stories twice. But I have considered the movies which are all anime exclusives, and maybe going for the box sets which are heavier on anime exclusives (Season 2-4 look plausible).
  16. It wouldn't be entirely possible to keep the franchise alive in the US, but the only way to do so is as depressing as it's considered is to buy the products (manga and/or dvd). As I've told folks who wish to see Disney show more effort in their animation, the only thing that companies listen to are the sound of the wallets opening up as the money inside is spent on their products. To a company no/little money equal no/little interest. And even then, the only kind of petitions that have a chance at working are the old fashion write your signature on sheet of paper. Online petitions show no effort, and only convince the company that fans aren't willing to go the extra mile.

Aside from Case Closed (Yeah, I get the official US releases), I don't really follow any on going titles. But after some library checkouts I see this manga managing to hold my attention to the point where I'm looking to make it a regular purchase. Now the point of the series is the only thing I find unsuccessful. Yeah the writer wanted to subvert gender cliches and sterotypes (man who into male oriented stuff, and female who's into female oriented stuff), but in the process the characters follow the opposite extreme rather than breaking the sterotypes. Now I think the point would be better made if the character was into various hobbies from both genders (action/adventure stories, cooking, sewing). Though as a guy who reads Shojo Manga, I can partially relate. But regardless, the characters are entertaining and likable, and the story is just fun. So what's your take on it?
  18. How can you be sure? I mean generally anime DVDs let you watch either English or Japanese.
  19. Yeah, but doesn't the US Release allow you to watch the Japanese Version (through audio track)?
  20. I have to say Dragon Ball Z The Legacy of Goku 2, and DBZ Buu's Fury are pretty addictive and fun games. Dragon Ball Advance Adventures is also pretty fun, which is more so when you get access to those other characters.

    US Comics.

If so, what are your current or favorite titles? Mine: 1. Darkwing Duck/Chip N Dale Rescue Ranger: So far each issue leaves me impatient for the next. Plus there's the nostalgia appeal since the original cartoons were part of my childhood. 2. Uncle Scrooge: More or less the same as the previous one. Okay, this isn't Ducktales, but it inspired the show. 3. Booster Gold: Unlike a majority of mainstream superhero comics, this title manages to be mature without all of that gratuitous adult content. Think Futurama, King of the Hills. It's adult tone is due to clever writing rather than trying to be risque. Plus the title character and stories are funny. 4. All New Batman The Brave and The Bold: Much like the cartoons is a modern Silver Age type comic, and you get exposure to various heroes each issue. And unlike the mainstream titles isn't tied down in crossover events. 5. Young Justice (The new series based off the cartoon): Again, the animated titles are mostly self contained, and simple. That's why I gave it a try. But I'm definitely going to keep up with this title as the later issue will be written by Greg Weisman (Supervising Producer of Gargoyles and The Spectacular Spider-Man). 6 Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic Universe: Stories are simple and fun, plus are similar to the 1994 SatAM cartoon. 7. Love & Capes: A superhero/romance/comedy, and a darn good one. Nice lighthearted humor, and a compeling romance (that can be serious without getting overdramatic). And what's more, there's a free and legal scan of the first issue: http://www.loveandcapes.com/readit/lnc0101.html 8. X-Men Forever 2: Sequel to X-Men Forever and is soon to end. But for those not in the know, this is an alternate reality series. It diverges from X-Men #3 (The comic published in 1991) and is written by Chris Claremount. Overall it was a fun title, and like the previous Spider-Girl comics didn't have to follow editorial mandates, thus allowing for more unpredictability. 9. Thunderstrike: Mini-series written by Tom DeFalco (who wrote the monthly series of the same name, and the writer of the previous Spider-Girl comics). Much like Greg Weisman, I'm willing to try any super hero comic by Tom D due to his decision to write towards both kids and adults rather than trying focus on one age group.
  22. Thought I'd try to add this to the discussion before considering making another thread. But let's say that Conan permanently reverts back to Shinichi, and the Detective Boys discover the truth. Now obviously in public they'd have to maintain formalities (like that honorific Niisan for instance), but when it's just them hanging out, would they address him in the same manner they do as Conan (dropping the formalities and all)?
  23. Not much. Been printing some receipts for my mom, while printing some Mega Man pictures for myself.

  25. See, I thought the legal issue pertained to Conan O'Brien. Not that it makes a difference. I mean Conan is a fairly common name (such as the aformentioned Barbarian and Arthur Conan Doyle).
