Because if the judge will say true then he would have to give the criminal 4 years in jail. But if the judge will say false then he would have to give the criminal 6 years in jail. They are to decide on how they are to split their gold. These ten thieves are lined up according to their rank, and the highest rank thief would decide on a plan to split these gold. If at least 50% of the thieves agree to the plan, it would be carried out. If not, the thief would be killed and the next in rank would suggest a plan. Suppose that each thief wants to get as much gold as they are able to get, wants to see another thief being killed, and each thief is logical and knows the situation well and that they know the rest of the thieves are also the same,... EDIT: Of course, they value their lives very much more than gold... what should the first thief suggest, such that he will get as much gold as he will get and that the rest of the thieves would support his plan? Moonlight Magician 98 Report post Posted May 18, 2011 Maybe the first thief will suggest that he will kill 5 thieves then the 4 remaining that will not be killed will agree to the plan.After killing 5 thieves,the first thief was not contented he suggest again to kill 2 thieves then 2 thieves will agree again to the plan.After killing 2 thieves,there are only 3 thieves now but the first thief suggests again that he will kill 1 thief so that the two of them will have the 50% of the gold.After killing 1 thief the first thief was not contented getting only 50% of the gold then he came up an idea to kill the remaining thief so that he can get as much gold he will get. So if there are only two thieves left, and the top ranking thief at that point of time suggest, the plan will definitely go through since just one agreeing thief is required (himself). Use this first step to determine how the gold is distributed. Edited: looks like its abit too difficult... ok another hint. If there are two thieves left, 50% of 2 is 1. As long as one out of these two thieves agree on the plan, the plan will be carried out. So the thief who suggests will DEFINITELY get his way no matter what. When there are two rhievess left, the last thieves will be left with nothing. Let's illustrate by using numbers. The smaller the number, the lower the ranking: Thief 1 and thief two is left. So thief 2 will suggest that he get all the 100 gold. Whether or not thief 1 agrees makes no difference to the outcome since thief 2 will surely agree, making it 50% agree. So thief 1 will never allow that to happen. In this case, any amount of gold will prompt thief 1 to agree to the plan. Thief 3 will use this to his advantage. So...
