Kodou Shinichi 1 Report post Posted July 1, 2011 Greetings everyone, Here I am asking your opinion about a thought which suddenly came to my mind today morning. Now, I am a BIG no... HUGE Sherlock Holmes' fan. Sherlock holmes is all what I do during my free time, I have finished all his novels a week ago, and today I thought, what if someone continues the series of adventures of the great detective and takes over to become a "Modern Arthur Conan Doyle" .... another way to look at it is basically fanfiction :/. But while thinking i figured out that it is not really as easy as writing any typical fanfic. about any T.V. series or book. Because Mr. Sherlock Holmes has his own unique character. Not to mention Sherlock Holmes lives in the 1878, before mobile phones, cars, and computers where made. Also Sherlock is an english man, in order for any writer who THINKS he can continue writing any story of Sherlock Holmes , he has to be familiar with the english culture specifically, the old days when Sherlock Holmes lived. These factors and many many more are important and they do give Sherlock Holmes the character he was presented as. So what do you guys think? Is it possible for anyone to continue writing (Sherlock Holmes) without messing up this character?? I personally ADMIRE this ficitional characater and do not want to ruin its name, but i really wish the story continues... I think i may find alot of Sherlockian people here who would help me decide, right?
Kiel95 86 Report post Posted July 1, 2011 well, personally, i still haven't gotten around to reading his works... but if you think about it... why continue something that ended already? I mean, if you look at things nowadays... they already have movies coming out with slightly different plots and the like... i see no reason in continuing unless you actually wish to do all teh research and read it yourself ~ if you do decide to do it, good luck

Anyway, just thinking...If sir Arthur was still alive, he wouldn't have stopped writing. (i guess) during his life, he had written first untill the novel called "The adventure of the final problem" he first decided this is going to be the ending of Sherlock Holmes, because the fictional character made by HIM was at that time more popular than himself, he stopped writing Holmes for 10 years....and in the 10 years period fans never stopped mailing him people , cancelled their registrations to magazines which presented Sherlock Holmes and all... so he returned Sherlock back to life (I'm sorry that is probably some extra unimportant iformation you do not care about, since ypu're not that intersted) But thats one of the reasons I think Sir Doyle wouldn't have stopped, and that's why I'm thinking of the idea of "completing" it
Genghis 13 Report post Posted July 1, 2011 Actually BBC released 3 modern Sherlock Holmes "movies" about a year ago... and I think they will be releasing more sometime this summer or fall. To be honest, I liked them all better than the Sherlock Holmes movie starring Robert Downey Jr. In my opinion, they were all much better than that movie. Here is a link if you are interested http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_%28TV_series%29 You could probably find the episodes online, I don't have any virus protection atm so i don't really want to search for them myself to watch them again

I watched the movie starring Robert Downey Jr. it was pretty good, in my opinion. But if you say Modern Sherlock is better then it must be GREAT to watch anyway thanx for your suggestion
