The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few. The idealism that Shinichi and Ran have can easily backfire and end far more lives than they possibly could have saved by allowing the one dangerous criminal to be killed on the spot. Idealism doesn't work in the real world, it never has. Idealism tends to get people killed. That isn't to say that one should be heartless, but if the situation calls for a swift resolution that could potentially kill more than you would save by preventing the police doing their jobs and stopping the criminal by any means necessary, you are doing something wrong. For instance... Shinichi deducing, the person has ALREADY KILLED, which means if they snap they could easily attack and kill another. Even Sherlock knew that at times killing was necessary, and sorry, but relying on Karate or a soccer ball is not enough. Ran can lose, especially if it is someone desperate and strong. And Shinichi can easily miss that ONE shot he has with his soccer ball. Idealism is great, but not when its blind.
