Upon them, there is a legendary train, the Galaxy Express 999, which is said to hold the dream of every children in the world. There comes a time when children get onboard the 999 for a journey upon the stars and come back as young men and women. The Earth is now dominated by the mecanical men, people who paid for an operation transforming their bodies into machines, therefore being granted immortality and immunity against hunger and sickness. They represent the upper class of the planet. Those who are not wealthy enough to pay for the operation are the lower class of the society, leaving in poor districts with famine and hunger. They all expect to one day get onboard the 999 to go to the planet Rametal, whom the mecanisation is originated, where they will be granted a mecanical body, free of charge. Tetsuro Hoshino, a young boy, saw his parents dying will trying to get him to board the 999, hoping that their child would get a mecanical body and live happily thereafter. Nowadays, as a young teenager, he still holds onto the dream of accomplishing his parents' will and get into the 999 to go to Rametal, granting him a mecanical body which will help him to get revenge against the mecanical man who killed his mother. He meets Maetel, a strange and beautiful woman who looks a lot like his mother, who offers him to travel with her into the 999. That's the beginning of a long journey were Tetsuro will discover planets unknown to him, meeting a lot of different people including legendary space pirates Harlock, Tochiro and Emeraldas, and ultimately his ideas will change, forging his own free will.
