Conan's Dictionary

Recommended Posts

This topic will be like our word of the day (any word and it's definition then you can add a fact about it) but the difference is well, it's not Word of the 'day' anymore since it's not one word for day.

The challenge here is you cannot use dictionary to define the word. You need to define it using your own words based on how you understand it. But the fact can be researched.

So i'll start

Constellation

Meaning: A collection of stars that has a distinct recognizable pattern.

Fact: There are currently 88 modern constellations recognized internationally. Most of them originated from the Ancient times. In before times, The constellations were used by people to pinpoint their location. Also, most stars in most constellations do not really have a connection at all since they are really far apart.

Fusion Reaction: A reaction triggered when the two nucleus of two atoms combines into one. This kind of reaction releases a lot of energy.

Fact: The counter part of Fusion Reaction is Fission which is used by Nuclear Power Plants. Unlike Fission, Fusion Reactors are alot safer and cleaner and is impossible to trigger a melt down but is alot harder to build. An example of a natural occuring Fusion Reactor is a star (The sun for example).

Pyruvate: an organic molecule produced in the breakdown of glucose that contains large amounts of energy and gets turned into lactic acid when doing anaerobic training.

Fact: Pyruvate is sold as a weight-loss supplement, though evidence supporting this use is lacking. A systematic review of six trials found a statistically significant difference in body weight with pyruvate compared to placebo.

PS: I love how my lack of creativity/memory to come up with a quote inspired you to create this xD

I just practiced what I was studying earlier and learned a new fact, love this topic!

Eutrophication: A chain-reaction process that occurs when there is algae overpopulation (algae blooms). When the algae cover the surface of the water, underwater plants can't receive the sunlight they need for photosynthesis and die. This causes a decrease in dissolved oxygen levels, and added with the fact that herbivore animals have now lost their food source, organisms die as well. The increase in nitrogen levels and decrease in oxygen levels eventually causes everything to die.

Fact: Shellfish reefs can help prevent this.

I just put down whatever I learned in class this week :P.

Camp 14:

A detention camp located in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, notorious for its terrible living standards. Although North Koreans ha denied its existence, satellite images have revealed it to be in one of the mountainous areas.

Fact:

One person who has escaped this camp said in an interview that the only reason he got out was because he heard there was food in China. He also told the interviewers that in the camp, nobody knew what 'love' was, so when he turned his mother and brother in for trying to escape, knowing they would be publicly executed, he didn't feel remorse.

Yeah. Apparently, things like that happen a lot, and the way everybody lived and was raised practically brainwashed them. That person also mentioned to the interviewer that, now that he's experiencing a 'normal' life in South Korea, he's trying to understand what 'love' is.

Assimilation:

The process in which one slowly melds into another culture through adopting their customs, habits, living style, etc.

I dunno why the hell he doesn't understand 'love'. I mean it's imprinted on our genes so even if he never heard about it, I'm sure he feels it. He probably just doesn't know what it is called.

Operating System:

A kind of software that operates as a connector between the hardware (computer) and the user (person)

Fact: Windows still beats every other operating systems as the one used by people for their computers

Stereolithography:

A type of projection (or as a file type: .stl) that takes horizontal slices of a 3-dimensional object as data.

Fact:

By saving things in this file type, you will be able to 3D-print it.

Maybe, but we wouldn't be able to know, would we? And it's not like it was encouraged inside that concentration camp. Camp 14 is known for keeping 3 generations there, so his parents couldn't have offered him love, either. To expect somebody to just know about something they never knew existed isn't exactly fair.

I didn't know that it was for 3 generations. Anyway, I still don't believe that he doesn't know it. I'm sure he feels love too (love can be something from a person to animals to objects) but he just doesn't know what it's called.

Anyway, I'm not flaming him for not loving his brother and mother, it's not his fault.

St. Elmo's Fire: A strange atmospheric phenoma that occurs on some (I dunno) conditions which creates a small flame on tip of a sharp object.

Fact: The first reported occurence of it was on the ship of Christopher Colombus
