[SPOILER DISCUSSION] Files 939-941 Department Store Stabbing

Recommended Posts

Here's my review of this Detective Conan case, FILE 940: Scattered Testimonies

Suspects

As usual, we have three suspects:

- Kamaya Takashi (he wears grey clothes, he's small-sized, has a wounded index finger, has two kanji characters on his back)

- Shikama Mitsuko (she wears light grey clothes, she's short, wears a cold mask, has number ''6'' shaped brooch)

- Miyadai Masaru (he wears dark grey clothes, he's tall, he has an athletes foot, has the Tokyo Spirit logo on his back)

Genta's description

Genta claims the culprit was small-sized, that the culprit had the number "2" printed on the back, they wore grey clothes.

Genta claims that he saw the culprit run past tall guys, from the haido high basketball team, who wore the same color as the culprit.

Mitsuhiko's description

Mitsuhiko claims the culprit was tall, that the way the ran was that of a man, has dark grey clothes.

Mitsuhiko claims the culprit zig-zag past 10 pieces of white mannequins holding different-sized-white-billboards.

Ayumi's description

Ayumi claims the culprit had average height(just a little taller than the professor), seemed like a woman, has light grey clothes(that almost looked white[File 939]).

Ayumi claims the culprit stood still for awhile to do something that looked like taking something from the bottom of the shoes before descending the stairs and went around a group high school students with the same uniform.

Other info

What we know from the File 939 is that the victim made plans to meet up with a troublesome customer of his restaurant by the stairs.

We also know the reasons for the suspects being found running/sweaty:

- Kamaya was running through the stairs because he was looking for the empty restroom(all the other floors' restroom were full(File 939]).

- Shikama was running because she thought she had lost her wallet and was looking on all floors, she also didn't want to miss the re-runs of a TV show at home.

- Miyadai was running because he was hurrying home to take a shower after sweating from eating really hot spicy Thailand cuisine(File 939). He had heard the thai soup had the same taste as his own special soup from his restaurant and therefore wanted to verify it.

We also know that the knife didn't have any fingerprints and that the culprit used gloves(which all of the suspects had) but because bleeding didn't occur until the victim tried to pull out the knife, it was unlikely that blood would be found on the culprit.

Lastly, we know that the victim survived but is still unconscious.

The culprit

In order to kill the victim, the culprit had to wear gloves in order to avoid leaving fingerprints. Kamaya would have a hard time holding a knife while wearing a glove on top of his bandaged index and middle finger(assuming he's right-haneded of course).

img000007%2Bglove.jpgimg000003%2Bfinger.jpg

The culprit had to later flee the scene fast. Shikama, who was coughing because of her cold would be at a disadvantage, not only because she would have a hard time running, but her coughs would attract more attention to her.

img000004%2Bcold.jpg

the culprit who attacked the victim with the knife is the ''troublesome customer'' who wanted to verify if his special recipe was stolen, Miyadai Masaru!

Going through the kids testimony:

Genta claimed the culprit was small-sized. Miyadai, who is tall, would appear smaller from Genta's point of view if he was running behind tall guys from the basketball team. Genta would naturally get the impression that the culprit is small when comparing the culprit to tall guys closer to himself.

img000010%2Btall.jpg

Genta also claimed the culprit had number "2" printed on his back when it in fact was the mirrored "S" from Miyadai's Tokyo Spirit logo.

the reason Genta saw it mirrored was because Miyadai wore his clothes inside out in order to not be recognized with the culprit's clothes. That's is why Genta witnessed the culprit wearing grey clothes similar to the basketball team, because the inside of Miyadai's clothes were actually grey(not darker).

img000005%2B2.jpg

Mitsuhiko claimed the culprit wore dark grey clothes. normally it wouldn't contradict Miyadai's description, but since he wore his clothes inside out, they were actually grey. the reason Mitsuhiko saw it as dark grey was because the culprit was running through white mannequins holding white billboards. Mitsuhiko would naturally get the impression that the grey would seem darker when it's surrounded by white, in other words it was an illusion, similar to Genta's.

img000013%2Bcolor%2Billusion.jpg

Ayumi claimed the culprit had average height. the reason for that is the fact the culprit Miyadai had an athlete foot. the reason Ayumi witnessed the culprit stop and check his foot before descending the stairs was becuase Miyadai started to feel pain in his foot. he stopped and naturally reacted by lifting up his foot to avoid putting weight on it. In order to not attract any attention through limping, Miyadai started to bend down a little( to the point were he seems like he has average height) and move a little slower in order to decrease the up-and-down motion from limping so that he can conceal the fact that his foot is hurt. The way he walked might've also looked like the way a shy woman would walk to Ayumi(which could be the reason she felt it was a woman).

img000014%2Bconceal.jpg

Ayumi also claimed that the culprit wore light grey clothes, that almost looked white. The reason culprits grey clothes looked white is similar to Mitsuhiko's situation. As the culprit was passing by the 4th floor, A group of high school students, wearing the same uniform, were passing by. Japanese High school uniforms are always different depending on the season. The most plausible clothes the students were wearing are the winter uniforms such as sailor fuku(sailor outfit), which are commonly dark colored. Ayumi would naturally get the impression that the culprit's clothes are lighter when it's surrounded by dark colored uniforms. The illusion of the grey clothes looking almost white was strengthened by the fact that Miyadai was wearing a white T-shirt under his grey clothes.

330px-Sailor-fuku_for_winter.jpgimg000005%2Bwhite%2Bt-shirt.jpg

That's why Genta's testimony, in terms of color of clothes, was correct.

Motive

Miyadai claimed that he heard that the victim's soup tasted like his own and therefore wanted to verify it. The police also mentioned that Miyadai and the victim used fight before because Miyadai accused the victim of stealing his secret recipe. Even though Miyadai denied the fact that the soup was similar to the police, the fact that it was similar must have been the reason he attacked the victim. We found out in File 939 that other customers praised the victim for his soup and that the victim added his special recipe to it. That special recipe must be the one Miyadai claims the victim stole. Since the victim survived the assault, the case is probably gonna end in nice note where a misunderstanding will be cleared out.

My guess is Shuukichi and Mary were there as well.

She was most certainly there. Shukichi? I'm not so sure.

What if Shuichi/Subaru has been the one in contact with Masumi and advising her by phone with cases? What if Shukichi is the middle brother, but never met Shinichi/Conan?

Then Sera knows Shuichi is alive, but that would be about it. Or Shuichi used his voice changer to sound like Shukichi, then nothing would change.

I don't think the Shuichi theory works out after Yumi's Ramen case. There are too many hints for Shuukichi being the middle bro right now. The only hint that might point to Subaru contacting Masumi by phone is chapter 800's showdown where Amuro, Masumi, and Okiya were all seen on a phone with unknown parties. Since then, no more clues that could be interpreted as phone interactions between Masumi and Okiya have appeared. There have been a lot for Shuukichi, most notably the Masumi Yumi hangup during the Ramen case and Masumi's description of her middle bro and his personality. If Okiya was involved with Masumi by phone I would expect more clues to have appeared by now.

The hints that Shuukichi was at the sea meeting are 1) He knows about the wizard (text to Masumi in the bowling alley case) and 2) Shuukichi immediately treats Conan as a skilled detective with no prompting or testing in his intro case.

The second point is important because I think Shuukichi figured out Conan is Shinichi because he met Shinichi as a boy during the sea meeting. His memorization skill allows him to remember Shinichi's face from back then. Most of my middle bro theory is now highly outdated (with no plans to reupdate), but this part is still relevant. To abridge...

After Sera texts her brother Conan's picture without telling him about her suspicions about Conan's true identity, the brother then asks if she met the Wizard. It seems non-coincidental for the middle brother to bring up the Wizard right after Sera reveals to him she met Conan. Unlike most people, the brother easily acknowledges that Conan is a brilliant detective. (860.16) ...

Masumi has neglected to tell her brother that she knows Conan is Shinichi, so the brother is probably not aware that she knows Conan's secret identity. Thus, he may have asked her that in order to probe if she knows Conan's identity without revealing that he himself already knows Conan is Shinichi.

But these hints strike me as quite similar to the Jodie=Vermouth and Subaru=Bourbon "hints."

The one in contact with Masumi knows about what happened on that beach. Shuichi and/or Shukichi could've heard about it from Masumi. Also, both Shuichi and Shukichi met Shinichi/Conan before the Bowling Alley Murder, and both know he is a brilliant detective.

If Shuichi/Subaru is in contact with Masumi, she would tell everyone she's in contact with her other brother—Shuichi's supposed to be dead, after all. Since he's undercover, he wouldn't tell her what he's up to—he wouldn't tell her he's Subaru Okiya—she wouldn't know he's working with Shinichi/Conan, and, thus, would wonder how he knows Shinichi/Conan.

As for clues of this twist, the sleeve of the middle brother (File 860) was redrawn for Volume 81—it looks more like Shuichi's/Subaru's shirt sleeve from Silent Clash (700–704/578–581) than the sleeve of Shukichi's shogi outfit.

File 860 (Volume 81)

Brothersleevev81.png

File 899

File%20899%20Page%202%20ndash%205_zpsw7y

The key, here, is the color—Shukichi's sleeve is too dark, while Shuichi's/Subaru's is more in line with the color of the middle brother's sleeve.

Actually, Shukichi could've been there, at the beach, and recognized Shinichi's/Conan's face as Shinichi's—my point is that the one who contacted Masumi is bringing this up, over the phone, because it seems to me that Shuichi/Subaru is the one contacting Masumi.

While I did agree that it does make a bit more sense that Shuichi is the one in contact with Masumi(based on how she acts post Mystery Train), Shuukichi had to be the one who met young Shinichi, and not Shuichi, because Shuukichi knew how smart Conan was even though he never met him before, that shows that he knows his true identity, so he must've met young Shinichi back then, while Shuichi never even thought that Conan was familiar to someone he met before, and neither did Ran think that Akai was familiar when she first saw him in New York, so it doesn't seem like he was there, he might've only heard Masumi talking about the Wizard so he asked her if she met him.

Shuichi knows that Conan is Shinichi. That, and Masumi telling him about what happened (probably ten years ago, give or take) on a certain beach, would be enough for him to put things together, and refer to Shinichi/Conan in his text to Masumi as "the wizard/magician."

Yes, only Shukichi could've seen Shinichi as a seven-year-old (again, give or take), but, actually Shuichi/Subaru turning out to be the one in contact with Masumi wouldn't contradict Shukichi being at that beach and seeing Shinichi.

@DCUniverse.

Wouldn't that change be made because haoris (or whatever shogi players wear during tournaments) have a white lining on the inside?
Professional shogi players typically have several different color outfits (Meijin match clothes), so there is no reason to assume that is Shuukichi's only outfit and that he doesn't have a lighter haori, or some other outfit with sleeves like that.

When it comes to clues, the strongest clue so far is when Sera tried to call her middle brother in the Ramen Restaurant.

The middle bro -- the one who has apparently been calling Masumi -- is the ramen lover who introduced her to the restaurant - and the one who matches Yumi's description as a ramen lover with stubble and glasses and sloppy clothing.

Shuukichi and the middle bro are "weirdly in sync" as Conan noted. If Shuuichi was calling Masumi while Yumi was calling ShuuKichi they wouldn't be in sync with the hangups (unless Shuuichi was also calling Yumi too with Shuukichi's voice and literally everything would be super weird and awkward about that setup.) Remember Gosho plays fair with his mysteries, so there would have to be another clue to explain why the two of them synced up for some other good reason - not "oh it was just a coincidence *laughs*~"

Yumi also so very conveniently said Shuukichi was named "Chuukichi" to Sera. (Callback to the Shinichi/Kinichi situation?) That kind of convenience only makes sense if Gosho was trying to keep Masumi from realizing she and Yumi are referring to the same person.

Apologies for linking 2 full pages. Pretty much all of these two pages is relevant to the point I am making, so cropping wouldn't have helped anyone.

Except we haven't seen those outfits.

The lining of the sleeve doesn't matter—both Shuichi's/Subaru's and Shukichi's outfits have a white one. It's the color of the sleeve that matters. If Gosho wanted to show us it was Shukichi, then he'd use the same color as Shukichi's outfit in File 899–File 902.

In fact, actually, I think the volume release of File 860 was just a recoloring. The original scan just appeared to be a black sleeve.

As for the Ramen Restaurant, again, it's a Jodie=Vermouth/Subaru=Bourbon like hint, to me. Yes, Gosho's been dragging things since September 2007 (or April 2003, if you want to take it even further), but having something like what happened in File 929 shown in the way it was, to me, a clear misdirect. Why not show Shukichi putting Yumi on hold and confirming that he is not only the middle brother, but the one in contact with Masumi, if you're going to show such a scene that screams he is the middle brother but keep the question unanswered? It's so blatantly, "Hey, look! He's definitely the one!... but we're going to leave things open..."

Yes, Shukichi is the middle brother, but Shuichi/Subaru is the one advising Masumi over the phone.

Honestly, Shukichi and MG may as well not have been introduced until after Scarlet Showdown, since they played no role in it, but that's the way things went.

By the way, at what point should this be moved to the middle brother thread? Did we already hit it?

That's been like the entire Bourbon arc. Masumi sleeptalking on the train "Shuu-nii" but not confirmed to be Akai's sister until very recently, Okiya with Shuuichi's eye on the mystery train but not confirmed until The Scarlet Showdown...

Masumi looking at someone disguised as Shuuichi and saying "Shuu-nii" is still more of a conformable thing than all of the middle brother stuff so far because at that point she either thought of Shuuichi as a brother or they really were related and there wasn't much of a question about that. With the middle brother stuff its more all completely implication and neither of them have directly spoken of the other by name to help with any kind of confirmation. The phone thing in the Ramen shop case was a heavy implication (to add to all of the "kichi-nii" stuff), but given the fact that it wasn't confirmed that they spoke to each other and that Conan offers the idea that Shuukichi could be getting calls due to his shogi winnings, so there is still a tiny bit of question of why its even necessary to not go ahead and just have Masumi say "Kichi-nii" in series already and make it more of a confirmed thing rather then just talking about it on postcards and animal crossings hints.

I think you're making your standpoint harder to understand, though since we kinda discussed this before I already know your argument, but simply put,...

The one that Sera talked to on phone in the Ramen case is her middle-bro shuukich...!

BUT, the one that has been helping her with the past cases and that also recognised conan in the "bowling" case is her older brother shuichi!

Shuukichi recognising Conan's intelligence indicates that he might've met him in the past, possibly with Sera and Mary.

One thing to note is that when Sera wondered how her bro knew conan in the "bowling" case(which indicates that the bro should not have met him before according to Sera), she got a text from him and reacted as if he explained everything to her, then we get the wizard thing! Point is, wizard sentence was a P.S, so it doesn't have to relate to their convo about conan, so he could've simply asked sera whether she's met the person she came to look for in Japan(meaning that the bro might not know the "wizard" is the same boy they were talking about a minute ago, indicating that the bro might not be mid-bro shuukichi[who might've met the "wizard" with sera and mary] but rather old-bro shuichi)... just a thing to consider...

But those were completely and utterly relevant to the main plot, at the time. Masumi and Shuichi/Subaru were important characters to the main plot long before those reveals.

The middle brother question, on the other hand? Shukichi will only become relevant once he's confirmed to be the middle brother.

No. That is NOT what I meant. Where did I say that? Point out where so I can edit my post and remove it, because that is the last thing I wanted to convey.

Shukichi is Masumi's and Shuichi's brother, but Shuichi was the one in contact with Masumi via phone in Steamy Relations, The Suspect is Makoto Kyogoku, and The Curious Customers of Ogura's Ramen, and, because he's supposed to be dead, Masumi tells everyone that she's in contact with Shukichi.

Could be—if he gave a straight-forward explanation and then suddenly went all cryptic, that'd be weird.

ok, I guess I misunderstood you, sorry, my bad... ´^.^`

straight-forward? unlikely, I'll rephrase my sentence, he might've given her an acceptable explaination to how he come to know about conan, like for example, they met on a case and he helped the FBI,...and then to de-rail the convo, he added the P.S. to avoid her questions...

Yeah, that's what I was getting at—he wouldn't refer to Shinichi/Conan as Shinichi/Conan for the whole text, then refer to him as the wizard, all of a sudden.

but other than the reasons you stated before, do you still have other reasons to believe that Sera called Shuichi, and not shuukichi, during the Ramen case? because, I mean Gosho clearly wanted to give us clear ''answers'' to not only who mid-bro was, but that Sera wanted to call him, for once(if she hasn't been calling him often that is), after she got reminded of him by yumi... it still wouldn't contradict the 'Shuichi is her ''fake mid-bro'' on the phone' theory...

Who's the most likely character to turn out to be the middle brother? Shukichi, of course. Thus, he's also the most likely character to turn out to have been in contact with Masumi. Shuichi is the only other person she could be in contact with—that's why I think it's him.

I know Gosho went through with the Bourbon and Subaru reveals, and most people saw them coming, but this? Even back when it was happening, the Bourbon and Subaru reveals were crucial to the plot... the middle brother? Not so much (though he can eventually become relevant, once things get going, again).

I just felt that, with what we were shown in 929, Gosho was trying to pull a fast one. Have Shukichi put Yumi on hold and then put her back on, and in the time between, Masumi calls her second brother, gets told he's talking with someone important, and then is hung up on. And what else? Shukichi isn't shown during the period Masumi calls her second brother.

Shukichi could have easily put Yumi on hold to turn down an interview request, while Masumi called Shuichi, was told by him that he was talking with someone important (Jodie, James or Andre, perhaps) and then was hung up on.

it's not maybe completely impossible,....but....this mystery isn't that important enough for Gosho to throw such a stunt(redherring) at us, Gosho has never really been the guy to stop hinting at stuff until the reveal of anything is necessary for a plot development!(see how long he stalled the official "shuichi is sera's brother" reveal, and how it's purpose was for conan to try deduce sera's(and MG's) plans)
