Aeyra 260 Report post Posted March 19, 2011 Ohhhh. I accidentally for some dumb reason did the cylinder formula, and as I said, I did this in my head. How did I get the square root, I have no clue. It happens to all of us. Like in my county countdown round when I said 1 5/8 and it was express as a common fraction. A.K.A. 13/8. Yes they are equal, but only one is right. IdentityUnknown 216 Report post Posted March 20, 2011 ...Wow... Well, it's the boys' turn, so I guess I couldn't answer even if I did have the right answer (which I don't). Interesting question though. One problem: WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD WE NEED TO USE THOSE EQUATIONS?!!!! Sorry. I suck at Math. It's my least favorite subject. Without math, we wouldn't be able to go into space, build cars, build buildings, create energy-efficient things, have computers, and a lot of things. Math is very important. (and very, very fun!) Ah...ok...I'm not very good at math (fine, I'm in advanced math, but I really am not a mathematician). Aeyra, I will never ever figure out the question you posted. At least I don't have to answer. Aeyra 260 Report post Posted March 23, 2011 That was a little random. Is no boy up to the challenge?
Misaki-chan 164 Report post Posted April 23, 2011 Since no one has answered in a month, I would take that as a "NO."

Aeyra 260 Report post Posted April 23, 2011 No, I challenged the boys to a semi-difficult MathCounts problem and they can't do it. Feel free to try to solve it (but don't give the answer to the boys!)
Anti-APTX4869 181 Report post Posted April 23, 2011 umm am i missing the problem, or am i blind? =_= sorry i can't see computer screen in a dark room... (i ran out of lightbulb.. dam..) I love math. IT IS REQUIRED FOR SCIENCE (Physics/Chemistry/etc...) hmmm i should check the whole topic to search for the problem...

Anti-APTX4869 181 Report post Posted April 24, 2011 ugh this is making my head crack lol... Been a while solving math problems like these. lesee.... 2 reg. Sq. Pyramid. = Octahedral Each edges = 12 cm... so.. here's what I did. Find the height ..|\..........Pythagorean theorem........ volume of pyramid .X|-\ 12 cm...6^2 + x^2 = 12^2........┌>. (1/3) (12^2)(6√3) ..|__\........36 + x^2 = 144..........ㅣ. 144(2√3) ...6cm........x^2 = 108...............ㅣ. 288√3 ..............x = √108 = 6√3-----------.. so.. volume of Octahedral is 576√3 cubic Centimeters ... i think i'm lost or missing a step. Anti-APTX4869 181 Report post Posted April 24, 2011 oh wait scratch that above that's wrong.. i forgot a step... =_= jeez i need to get back to my math brain again lol..
Anti-APTX4869 181 Report post Posted April 24, 2011 /facepalm.... the triangle makes 30-60-90 so i dont even have to do pythagorean in the first step,... so since the triangle is 6-x-12, it is 6-6√3-12, then to find the height, 6-x-6√3.... Height... 6√3 = √108, (√108)^2 = 108 36+x^2=108 <------------┘ x^2 = 72 x=√72 x=6√2 Volume of pyramid (1/3)(6√2)(144) =144(2√2) =288√2 Volume of Octahedral 2(288√2) =576√2 cm^3... Wait, HUH? What am I doing wrong?
