I agree with the 'floating timeiine' logic, since that happens in manga/anime a lot, but I think that Gosho Aoyama is smart enough to take a different approach to it instead of taking the easiest path. My opinion is that Shinichi will turn back before the national tests, pass them, get into the college he wants, be awarded for his efforts, etc. etc. That's probably the most likely path that Shinichi would go down.
