Plot
Kogoro, Ran and Sonoko are in Kanagawa Prefecture standing in front of the Déesse du Vent restaurant, which is so popular that reservations have to be made two years in advance. But with the connections of the Suzuki Group, Sonoko was able to arrange a lunch table at the request of Kogoro, who had seen the restaurant on a television program hosted by Yoko Okino. The Detective Boys are also supposed to come with Professor Agasa, but they have not arrived yet.
The reason for this is that the professor was caught in a traffic stop with his Volkswagen Beetle. He was 21 km/h too fast and gets a ticket from a motorcycle policewoman. On the passenger seat, Conan is annoyed by this, because he had warned the professor beforehand that he was driving too fast. The policewoman looks at Conan and salutes him before she gets back on her motorcycle and drives on, which makes Conan wonder for a moment.
Arriving at the restaurant, the professor explains the reason for the delay. The other detective boys besides Conan were also supposed to come, but Haibara spontaneously did not feel like it, and Ayumi, Genta and Mitsuhiko preferred to keep her company. The kids thus stayed at Agasa's house, where they played video games and let Subaru Okiya cook them curry. Conan thinks back to the fact that a lot has happened recently with the battle between the organization and the FBI and the case with Akemi's time capsule, so he understands why Haibara currently does not want to leave the house. Meanwhile, the professor briefly goes to the restrooms.
At the group's table, Sonoko is approached by an older gentleman in a cap and face mask, who is accompanied by two bodyguards. Sonoko does not recognize the man, who then removes his mask and introduces himself as Kinji Nanjou, who was made president of Suzuki Security by Sonoko's father. Sonoko only knows him slightly, having met him briefly at one of the company's golf tournaments. Nanjou wears the mask, however, not because of a cold, but to protect his identity. Recently, Nanjou's safe was stolen, an embarrassing affair as president of a security company. Nanjo then said on television that the safe can only be opened by him, so if the thieves want to open it, they would have to steal him too. This cocky announcement has brought Nanjou a flood of threatening letters and kidnapping announcements, which is why he wears a mask and stays with bodyguards. But their presence bothers Nanjou, as he has been waiting for two years to make reservations to eat here with his family. In truth, however, he would rather have a drink at his favorite pub with some pretty girls beforehand, while his family is not yet present, which Kogoro agrees to, with Ran and Sonoko staring at them. Nanjou then says his goodbyes and heads to the restrooms, while two other patrons of the restaurant, a man and a woman, glare at him.
While washing their hands at the sinks, Agasa and Nanjou meet and realize they look quite similar to each other. When Agasa ties his hair in a braid at the back and puts on Nanjou's cap and mask, the latter asks Agasa for a favor. A short time later, Agasa leaves the restroom wearing Nanjou's tie, vest, and jacket, along with a spare mask and Nanjou's cap. Nanjou stays behind in the restroom, already pleased that his ruse worked out, but when he leaves the restroom, the bodyguards are still standing outside the door, asking him what the whole thing is about. They enter the men's room to confront him. Agasa watches the whole thing and thinks to himself that he knew this would happen. A moment later, the glaring man from earlier holds Agasa at gunpoint, calls him "President Nanjou" and forces him to come along without a sound.
As the two walk through the restaurant, they are seen by Conan, who initially mistakes Agasa for Nanjou from a distance as well, though he notices the absence of the bodyguards. He goes to the restrooms himself, where he sees the real Nanjou arguing with the bodyguards. Conan immediately recognizes that Nanjou is wearing Agasa's jacket and bow tie, and runs back. Suddenly, a loud bang is heard, which seems to have been a gunshot. Conan rushes after the sound, with Ran and Kogoro following. In the underground parking lot of the restaurant, Conan finds a bloodstain next to an empty parking space. Conan reveals to Ran and Kogoro that Agasa was probably kidnapped because someone mistook him for Nanjou - he was probably shot and taken away by car. Conan grabs his skateboard and takes off in pursuit, Ran and Kogoro follow him in Kogoro's rental car, while Ran simultaneously informs the police.
On the highway, Conan tracks the kidnappers with his tracking glasses, which pick up the signal from Agasa's detective badge. Using the badge, Conan contacts Agasa. The professor says that he has been shot in the thigh and is rapidly losing blood. He informs Conan that there are two kidnappers, a man with a gun who forced him into the trunk and a woman driving the car. The car is a white Toyota Camry. Conan spots the car on the highway and catches sight of blood spatters on the trunk. The hijackers recognize Conan in the rearview mirror as the boy from the restaurant, and runs him off the road. Conan is catapulted off his skateboard, but before he can fall off the highway, a motorcycle cop uses his upside-down skateboard as a ramp and catches Conan mid-air.
The policewoman lands safely on her motorcycle and drops Conan off. It is the same policewoman who had given Agasa the ticket. She introduces herself as Chihaya Hagiwara and wants Conan to explain what is going on.
