Kogoro and Conan are checking out costumes for Kogoro Mouri's one day of being a chief firemen. Later they meet people attending a costume party. While walking home, they find a police car in front of the house and meet the people from the costume shop earlier, realizing the host has been murdered.

Conan realizes that the culprit must've interfered with the rigor mortis and finds the evidence to convict the culprit. The culprit is Minoru Kijima, who was romantically involved with the victim. After confessing to his girlfriend's murder, Minoru posthumously revealed Umeda as a villainous blackmailer. As a result of their relationship, Umeda gave Minoru benefits regarding their work, a gesture Minoru was happy with. But when Minoru began trying to pursue another relationship, the evil Umeda threatened to destroy her boyfriend's career if he broke up with her, driving Minoru to kill Umeda to escape her stranglehold.

Trivia

• This is the second case that mentioned an earthquake, which happened recently in the past. The Mysterious Punishment From Heaven was the first.
• When Kogoro mentioned that 5 years ago, you could find a pay phone almost everywhere, and now, they are almost impossible to find. This is interesting, due to 5 years ago, Conan used the pay phone more than a regular phone, when not using the Earring Cellphone, and at this time, he is using cellphones practically all the time, and no longer uses the earring cellphone.
• This is the case that Kogoro was sleepy, so he sat down and simply fell asleep, leaving Conan time to investigate, and only woke up, when Conan opened a door to investigate further, since it was freezing cold. In short, he was woken up by the cold.
• This is the first time for Sato to see "Sleeping Kogoro" since she fiddled with his mouth in The Shinkansen Transport Case.
