Situation
Heiji invites Conan, Ran, and Kogoro to visit him in Osaka, taking them on a sightseeing tour. In a restaurant, they run into Kazuha Toyama, Heiji's childhood friend, who appears to be jealous of Ran, asking her if she's "that Kudo girl" that Heiji keeps talking about and telling Ran to back off, because Heiji and her have been "joined by steel" for ages. Ran laughs and explains herself and the two girls hit it off. After finishing their meal, Kazuha joins them on their exploration of the city, but, as they leave the restaurant, a dead body falls from the roof of the building, hitting Kogoro's rental car.
The police arrive and quickly realise that this newest victim, a man in his forties, has been killed in the same fashion as two other people who died a few days earlier, by being stabbed in the heart through their wallets.

A careful study of the victims' driver records reveals they all attended the same driving school. Heiji is the first one to learn of this and decides to confront the Congressman about it. Meanwhile Conan rejoins Ran and Kogoro only to be swooped away to a hidden shack where a serial killer is believed to be, but with a photo of the driving record and the testimony of the serial killer it appears two mysteries are about to be solved.

Manga to anime changes
- In the manga, Heiji remarks that the trick that was used to make the corpse of the third victim fall to the ground is the same as the one used in a case that Kogoro (or rather, Conan) solved before. This part was removed in the anime.

Trivia
- When Heiji explains at the end why he put himself in danger to prevent the culprit from committing suicide, he cites Shinichi's principle, enunciated in Distinguished Family's Consecutive Accidental Death Case, that a detective should never force the culprit into suicide in the process of deducing their identity.
- This is the episode that Kazuha first mistook Ran for Heiji's 'Kudo," and presumed love interest.
- This is the first case that takes place in Heiji Hattori's home town of Osaka.
- This is the case that Hattori is worried about a nightmare that he had, where Kudo/Conan ends up dying.
- Kazuha and Heiji's "bond of steel" is when they were little kids they were handcuffed together once.
- Kazuha keeps the link of the handcuffs as a momento around her neck, and gave one to Heiji with the handcuff key as an amulet, which protects him.
- This is the case that Hattori smuggled Conan inside of his jacket.
- This is the episode that Hattori places his amulet around Conan's neck to keep him safe.
- This is the first episode that Ran almost got stabbed, however Conan jumped in the way of the knife.
- In a way, this is the first case where Conan gets stabbed, however, thanks to Hattori's amulet, which completely protected him from the knife, he was only temporarily breathless, but okay. In short, Conan had his first near miss with being stabbed.
- This is the first episode that Kazuha uses her aikido to take down a culprit, in short the serial killer who stabbed Conan.
- This is the first episode that Hattori got shot, although accidentally, since he fought to avoid a culprit's suicide.
