Case

Situation

Ran, Conan, and Kogoro go on a hiking trip. While walking, Kogoro noticed a vending machine and decided to buy a bottle of "Guts-man" as he was suffering from a lack of sleep. He found an extra "Guts-man" bottle in the machine and decided to take it. After careful examination of the bottle, he decided to drink it. While he was drinking the extra bottle of "Guts-man" a passing woman screams.

Murder

Location: Town Victim: Tatsuya Nagai Age: 26 years old Cause of death: Phosphoric acid poisoning Suspects: Miho Nishitani Tatsuya Nagai was found lying on the floor struggling, while foaming from his mouth. Conan noticed a bottle of "Guts-man" lying on the floor near the struggling Tatsuya, and pointed it out to Kogoro. Kogoro questioned Tatsuya if he had drank from the bottle of "Guts-man", and Tatsuya nodded his head before one last struggle and died.

Miho Nishitani used a poisoned Gutsman drink to kill Tatsuya Nagai; he had pushed her down a set of stairs in public after she called the cops on him for stalking her. Worrying for her life, she knew a stalker would even want to drink what she did, purchasing a Gutsman drink in advance and putting poison in it. She did purchase another bottle from the machine, but pretended to get it, taking out the poisoned bottle instead and pretending to drink it. She left it behind on a fence for Tatsuya to drink. However, two things were wrong with the plan: a sticker on the bottle containing the poison advertised a contest that was already over, and the machine would not likely still have any left. Secondly, Kogoro found the bottle she actually paid for, but mistook it for a machine error for getting a second bottle for free. Another thing she not expect was that Nagai had made a hidden camera, hidden in his lighter which he used to take pictures of her actually committing the murder in the exact way Conan described.

Miho says that she was too afraid knowing Tatsuya had planned to kill her eventually and the police would not help her so she decided to take matters into her own hands. Sympathetic as Miho is, a self-defense plea will not count in her case: self-defense can only be invoked if there's no premeditation, and since Miho made a whole plan to kill Nagai, it doesn't apply. However, there is evidence in Miho's favor: a bag containing an assortment of harmful tools was found by Conan in the bushes outside her home, with Tatsuya's fingerprints. This means, he had been planning on not only killing her but also torturing her in ways too gruesome to imagine. Due to this evidence, Miho will likely receive a light sentence: self-defense may not be technically appliable, but she was in a desperate enough situation to warrant killing Tatsuya to save herself.

Afterwards, Conan, Ran, and Kogoro discuss the case and how Miho had feared for life so much that she resorted to committing murder. Kogoro comments that had she not killed Tatsuya, they would have been investigating her murder instead. Ran also comments how this could happen to any woman at any time, but Kogoro laughs this off saying no one obsess over her. Insulted, Ran slices off the top of the Guts-man Soda bottle Kogoro is holding with a karate chop, frightening both Conan and Kogoro.
