Sonoko asked him why he would do this for a total stranger, and he reveals he remembered her from a previous Karate tournament, and how she, "cheered for her best friend, with all her energy", causing Sonoko to blush. * Makoto finally calls Sonoko to tell her he won a huge Karate tournament, but Sonoko calls him "stupid" over and over with tears in her eyes, yelling at him for not calling her, since she bought a new cellphone only for him. Makoto apologizes, explaining he didn't want to bother her with unimportant things, which Sonoko privately thinks, "He doesn't get it." Then, Makoto gives her caution about the lowering temperature in Japan, and that she shouldn't wear any short skirts, to which she, in a girly manner, replies she isn't wearing one, but actually she is.

* In Sonoko's letter to Makoto, she wrote that she is sewing a coat for "the one I like". However, she underestimated the difficulty of sewing, and thus is forced to by a coat instead. Ran asks why Sonoko refers to Makoto as "the one I like", and Sonoko replies that it is designed to make Makoto a bit nervous, so that when she says in a future letter that "you are that person" he is going to be overwhelmed with joy.
* At the end of the episode, Makoto has arrived, jealous, to see who the chocolates are for, and Sonoko says it's for him, causing him to go red.

* As Makoto has again not been contacting her for a while, Sonoko grows worried again.
 +
* Since she told Makoto that she was making chocolate for "the one I like" (note that this is simply a continuation of her strategy in previous case), on Valentine's Day, Sonoko (along with Ran, Kogoro and Conan) heads to a mountain villa (in an unspecified prefecture) to make chocolate for Makoto.

* At the end of the episode, Makoto arrives at the mountain villa, jealous, to see who the chocolates are for; in the process, he successfully knocks down two armed killers, thus saving Sonoko and the others from danger.

* Sonoko says that the chocolate is for him, and shows him her masterpiece: a large heart-shaped chunk of chocolate with the words "to Makoto" on it. This causes Makoto to blush, and he tries to run away; but Sonoko tells him to stop, and subsequently Makoto takes the chocolate.

* This marks the beginning of the relationship between Sonoko and Makoto.

* Sonoko sent a message to Makoto on their place and time of their meeting. Makoto was confused about the message and decided to camp in that forest until the day of the meeting comes. When Sonoko was in danger, he immediately came to rescue her, knocking out the bad guys in one go.

* Imitating a popular TV series, Sonoko tied a red handkerchief to a maple tree in the mountains of Gunma and sent a message to Makoto to lure him there for a romantic rendezvous. Since the message was not written in plain language, Makoto was unable to understand when he was supposed to be there; so he decided to come to Japan as soon as he could (leaving his karate tournament behind) to set up a tent in the mountains of Gunma and wait for Sonoko.
 +
* Sonoko, not knowing that Makoto has come to Japan, grabs Yamamura's pad and starts watching the live broadcast of Makoto's tournament. She is immensely pleased when the announcer, during his introduction of Makoto, mentions that he has not lost in 400 consecutive matches.

* Sonoko, Ran and Conan get involved in a murder case in those mountains and while Conan is able to determine the culprit, he cannot deal with the gang of which the culprit is a leader, and neither can Ran. During the fight between Ran and the gang, she gets injured and is gradually overpowered; Sonoko screams for help, and Makoto shows up right at this moment, and he is able to easily defeat the rest of the gang.
 +
* He then tells Sonoko about what he did after receiving the message, making Sonoko immensely pleased again. However, he has no plan to stay in Japan with Sonoko; he asks Agasa whether it is possible to drive him to the airport instead so that he can head back to the tournament and fight against the champion to see who is better.

* Sonoko introduces Makoto to her parents. Since her father, Shiro, is a fan of martial arts competitions, Sonoko tells them that Makoto has won 400 consecutive matches on the world stage and that if Makoto had not left his karate competition to come to Japan to meet her, the streak would have been longer. Shiro is in awe when he hears this, while her mother, Tomoko, is left with the impression that Makoto is too fight-obsessed and not qualified to be the prospective heir of the Suzuki family.
* Sonoko reveals that Makoto left a karate competition in order to meet her parents and tightly hugs his arm while both are blushing.

* She then turns her anger to Sonoko, questioning her judgement in choosing Makoto as boyfriend instead of someone who is from the same class as her. Sonoko thinks that it is her liberty to choose whoever she wants, and this quickly turns into a shouting match.
* Sonoko made a bet with Kaitou Kid but asked him to promise her not to hurt Makoto as he has an upcoming tournament. In the end, Makoto managed to uncover Kid's disguise as Sonoko. Upon asking him, he blushed shyly and said that Kid's ring finger is longer than his index finger, unlike Sonoko.
+
* Shiro reassures Makoto that since both he and Sonoko are still high school students, he needs not worry too much about the issues that his wife brought up just yet.
 +
* Ran calls Sonoko, telling her that Kaito Kid has just accepted yet another challenge from Jirokichi, Sonoko's uncle. Sonoko is delighted to hear this, and calls Kid "Kid-sama" in the conversation, which irritates Makoto. He thus heads to Jirokichi's place to try to convince him to let him be a part of the security against Kid.
 +
* After Jirokichi agrees, Tomoko challenges Makoto to a bet: if he successfully guard the jewel from Kid, then she will let their relationship develop; otherwise, Makoto is to leave Sonoko alone. Makoto accepts this bet.
 +
* Sonoko, after knowing that Makoto will be defending the jewel alone, makes a deal with Kaito Kid. She will allow Kid to impersonate her during his mission (in order to test whether Makoto can distinguish between the real and the fake Sonoko), and in return, Kid is not to harm Makoto (as he has an upcoming karate tournament).
 +
* Makoto manages to recognize that the impersonated Sonoko is fake. Upon asking him, he blushes shyly and says that Kid's ring finger is longer than his index finger, unlike Sonoko. Sonoko is reasonably disappointed by this explanation.
 +
* Makoto also manages to guard the jewel, and Tomoko fulfills her promises and lets him continue his relationship with Sonoko. She remarks that he will be an easy target of bullying.

The romantic relationship between Sonoko Suzuki and Makoto Kyogoku.

Relationship Analysis

Sonoko presenting the chocolate she made to Makoto.

Sonoko Suzuki originally met Makoto Kyogoku while vacationing, where he was a waiter at a restaurant and worked at a hotel in his spare time.[1] At first, neither she, Conan, nor Ran recognized him, because he wore glasses to hide his features. He later saves her when he takes a knife in the arm for her, to protect her from getting killed by a crazed serial killer.[1] This is when Ran finally realizes that he is the famous karate champion. After defeating the killer, he confesses his feelings for her, which leaves Sonoko dumbfounded and flustered.[1] According to Makoto, he originally met Sonoko during one of Ran's tournaments, and loved how feisty and firey she was in trying to cheer her friend on.[1] After this, Sonoko and Makoto begin a long distance relationship.[1]

Makoto often saves Sonoko from dangerous peril, like in a snow lodge,[2] and in a forest.[3] Sonoko loves to use some kind of concocted scheme to get Makoto to come to her, usually in some romantic way, to create a romantic and dreamy experience for her.[3] This, however, doesn't always end in success, but he sometimes does stumble through her little schemes.[2][3] He often warns her of the way she is dressed, because he believes that guys will try to come after her because of it.[1][2]

Sonoko often wants to show Makoto that her feelings for him are stronger than he thinks, planning simple ideas to make him feel special. However, these often go in awry, as she either cannot make what she had planned to make, like when she promised to make him a home-made sweater, but had to resort to buying one in a mall,[4] or Makoto has no idea what she gave him is, like when he believed that the pottery she sent him was supposed to be for flowers.[5] Sonoko keeps a photo of Makoto in her bag, and uses it as a good luck charm for when she takes exams.[6] She has also made him a chocolate, trying to make him feel jealous by not saying who it was for, thus forcing him to visit her in a snow lodge to ask her what was going on.[2] When he finds out that indeed, she made him the chocolate, he gets very embarrassed himself.[2]

Although long distance relationships can be hard to be in, Sonoko has stayed faithful to Makoto, other than dreaming of meeting up with the Kaitou Kid, though this is mostly to see him up close more than anything else.

Sonoko and Makoto moments

Manga/Anime

Volume 22: Files 219-221 / Episodes 153-154: Sonoko's Dangerous Summer Story

  • While on vacation in Izu, Shizuoka, Sonoko is hit upon by a rather handsome college student named Tadahiko Michiwaki. Conan watches them converse in disbelief; he thought that nobody would like Sonoko.
  • Makoto makes his debut in the series as a waiter to Sonoko, Conan, Ran, and Michiwaki, who a while ago asked Sonoko to have lunch with him (Sonoko agreed, but she was not confident enough to go alone).
  • Makoto puts Michiwaki's beer down on the table with a loud bang, and then, rudely, orders him not to leave his cigarette's ashes on the floor. Later, Makoto abruptly comes in between Sonoko and Michiwaki to serve the fried noodles that he ordered. He then rudely tells them to wrap up quickly, as "there are a lot of customers waiting to eat".
  • At the Karawuya Hotel, as the trio waits for Michiwaki to show up for dinner, Makoto appears next to Sonoko, and leaves an umbrella next to her, telling her that she can use it if she needs to (it is raining outside).
  • After Sonoko is assaulted, Makoto quickly arrives at her room, and begins berating her for wearing revealing clothing, which, in his belief, contributed to the attack. He then persuades her and the others to change their room and stay at the hotel for dinner, since it is dangerous outside.
  • At dinner, Makoto tells Sonoko that the meal for her and her friends, is free. In exchange, they are not to tell anyone about the assault (Makoto is probably worried about he hotel's reputation here).
  • The next morning, Makoto follows the gang to a popular restaurant. After Conan notices Michiwaki's car rolling down the hill, with a sleepy Sonoko inside, Makoto quickly follows Conan and Ran outside in order to help Sonoko, but he is stopped by the staff at the restaurant, who demands that he pays his bill first.
  • An angered Makoto demands an answer from Michiwaki as to why he did not put an emergency brake on his car, which could have killed Sonoko.
  • As Michiwaki is about to kill Sonoko, Makoto comes to her rescue, and proceeds to cooly defeat the crazed murderer with his superb karate skills. Sonoko learns that he was following her to make sure she would not get hurt (Makoto noticed that Michiwaki had talked to a few other girls before Sonoko met him).
  • Sonoko asks him why he would do all this for a total stranger, and Makoto reveals that he developed feelings for her when he saw her cheering with all her energy for Ran in a karate tournament. Before Makoto leaves, he says the words that make the young girl's face instantaneously turn neon pink. They are as follows:
"Oh, yes. Going around in lingerie like that is sure to seduce more men than necessary. If you could, I'd like you to stop doing that. Of course, as the guy who loves you the most in this world, it doesn't matter if you don't want to listen to me."

— Makoto, confessing to Sonoko, how his feelings for her transformed into love.

  • In the omake, Ran reveals that Makoto and Sonoko has begun dating, and that (to Sonoko's dismay) Makoto has decided to go abroad to study (as he has no more worthy rivals in Japan). Since Makoto is not around, Sonoko is still a bit "boy crazy".

Volume 25: Files 243-245 / Episodes 172-173: The Resurrected Dying Message

  • Sonoko thinks that Makoto is being cold to her for not calling her for two months in a row.
  • Sonoko takes out her new cell phone, and, while staring at it, she thinks about Makoto and silently calls him an "idiot."
  • Makoto finally calls Sonoko to tell her he won a huge Karate tournament, but Sonoko calls him "stupid" over and over with tears in her eyes, reflecting the frustration of not receiving a call from him for so long. Makoto apologizes, explaining he thought that there was nothing particularly important to talk about. Then, Makoto cautions her about the flu in Japan, and that she should not wear any short skirts.

Volume 28: File 284 & Volume 29: Files 285-286 / Episodes 217-218: Megure's Sealed Secret

  • In Sonoko's letter to Makoto, she wrote that she is sewing a coat for "the one I like".
  • Ran does not completely approve of this idea, prompting Sonoko to say that since Makoto is quite silent and slightly introverted, if she does not do so, then she will never know what he is thinking.

Volume 30: Files 305-306 & Volume 31: File 307/ Episodes 228-229: The Murderous Pottery Class

  • Sonoko signs up for a pottery class in order to make cups for herself and for Makoto. She excitedly shows both to Ran: hers has Makoto's full name written on it, and the one intended for Makoto, which is much larger, has her name on it.
  • Sonoko explains that since she did not sew the bought coat herself, she thought that it would not be right to send it to Makoto. Furthermore, he would not need a coat much, while cups are everyday objects, so Makoto would be using it much more frequently and thus never forget about her.
  • Makoto receives the cup a few weeks later, but he seems to believe that it is a flower pot. This makes Sonoko slightly disappointed.

Volume 33: Files 331-334 / Episodes 266-268: The Truth Behind Valentine's

  • As Makoto has again not been contacting her for a while, Sonoko grows worried again.
  • Since she told Makoto that she was making chocolate for "the one I like" (note that this is simply a continuation of her strategy in previous case), on Valentine's Day, Sonoko (along with Ran, Kogoro and Conan) heads to a mountain villa (in an unspecified prefecture) to make chocolate for Makoto.
  • At the end of the episode, Makoto arrives at the mountain villa, jealous, to see who the chocolates are for; in the process, he successfully knocks down two armed killers, thus saving Sonoko and the others from danger.
  • Sonoko says that the chocolate is for him, and shows him her masterpiece: a large heart-shaped chunk of chocolate with the words "to Makoto" on it. This causes Makoto to blush, and he tries to run away; but Sonoko tells him to stop, and subsequently Makoto takes the chocolate.
  • This marks the beginning of the relationship between Sonoko and Makoto.
Sonoko gives the chocolate she made to Makoto.

Volume 52: Files 541-543 / Episodes 457-458: Sonoko's Red Handkerchief

  • Imitating a popular TV series, Sonoko tied a red handkerchief to a maple tree in the mountains of Gunma and sent a message to Makoto to lure him there for a romantic rendezvous. Since the message was not written in plain language, Makoto was unable to understand when he was supposed to be there; so he decided to come to Japan as soon as he could (leaving his karate tournament behind) to set up a tent in the mountains of Gunma and wait for Sonoko.
  • Sonoko, not knowing that Makoto has come to Japan, grabs Yamamura's pad and starts watching the live broadcast of Makoto's tournament. She is immensely pleased when the announcer, during his introduction of Makoto, mentions that he has not lost in 400 consecutive matches.
  • Sonoko, Ran and Conan get involved in a murder case in those mountains and while Conan is able to determine the culprit, he cannot deal with the gang of which the culprit is a leader, and neither can Ran. During the fight between Ran and the gang, she gets injured and is gradually overpowered; Sonoko screams for help, and Makoto shows up right at this moment, and he is able to easily defeat the rest of the gang.
  • He then tells Sonoko about what he did after receiving the message, making Sonoko immensely pleased again. However, he has no plan to stay in Japan with Sonoko; he asks Agasa whether it is possible to drive him to the airport instead so that he can head back to the tournament and fight against the champion to see who is better.

Volume 62: Files 638-640 / Episodes 510-511: Conan vs. Double Code Mystery (Case 2)

  • Sonoko meets Okiya; since she thinks that he is both handsome and highly educated (Okiya claims that he is a graduate student at a prestigious university), she tries to hit on him, only to be stopped by Ran, who reminds her that Makoto would get mad.

Volume 69: Files 725-727 / Episodes 608-609: White Day of Betrayal

  • Also Makoto remembers that he needs to give something back to Sonoko on the White Day, his return gift is rather unconventional: a message announcing his win at a major karate tournament. Sonoko is happy about this, but then asks Makoto whether he has anything material to give her. Makoto obviously has not prepared anything like that, forcing him to say that he is doing an interview (as he is the victor) and thus will talk to Sonoko later.

Volume 78: Files 818-824 / Episodes 701-704: The Jet-Black Mystery Train

  • Sonoko, having learned that her uncle Jirokichi will exhibit a gem on the Jet-black Mystery Train to lure Kaito Kid, decides to put a love letter near the gem so that when Kaito Kid comes to steal it, he would see her confession.
  • Ran, as usual, expresses her disapproval, but Sonoko argues that her love to Makoto is different from that to Kaito Kid.

Volume 78: Files 815-827 / Episodes 705-706: Conan in a Locked Room

  • Makoto sent a message to Sonoko saying that as part of his karate training, he has taken up tennis, and that he would be thrilled to play with Sonoko when he gets back to Japan. For this reason, Sonoko decided to take tennis classes. The coach turns out to be Amuro Tooru.

Volume 81: Files 859-861 / Episodes 744-745: The Suspect is Makoto Kyogoku

  • As it is raining heavily, Makoto cannot play tennis with Sonoko as they previously wished. So, instead, Sonoko heads to a bowling alley.
  • Like many others, Makoto mistakenly thinks that Sera is a boy in their first encounter. So, after seeing Sera get too close to Sonoko, he places his hand on Sera's shoulder, and gives her a menacing dart. A fight then ensues, and finally Sonoko has to step in in order to clarify the misunderstanding.
  • In the bowling alley, Sonoko's cheers for Makoto makes him blush, and his bowling ball ends up breaking the bowling lane.
  • When Yamamura accuses Makoto as the murderer, Sonoko blushes and claims that he is innocent by shouting that:
"Makoto-san is...absolutely fantastic and nice and is a good person!

— Sonoko trying to protect Makoto, causing him to blush deeply

Volume 82: Files 862-864 / Episodes 746-747: Kaitou Kid VS Makoto Kyogoku

  • Sonoko introduces Makoto to her parents.
  • She then turns her anger to Sonoko, questioning her judgement in choosing Makoto as boyfriend instead of someone who is from the same class as her. Sonoko thinks that it is her liberty to choose whoever she wants, and this quickly turns into a shouting match.
  • Shiro reassures Makoto that since both he and Sonoko are still high school students, he needs not worry too much about the issues that his wife brought up just yet.
  • Ran calls Sonoko, telling her that Kaito Kid has just accepted yet another challenge from Jirokichi, Sonoko's uncle. Sonoko is delighted to hear this, and calls Kid "Kid-sama" in the conversation, which irritates Makoto. He thus heads to Jirokichi's place to try to convince him to let him be a part of the security against Kid.
  • After Jirokichi agrees, Tomoko challenges Makoto to a bet: if he successfully guard the jewel from Kid, then she will let their relationship develop; otherwise, Makoto is to leave Sonoko alone. Makoto accepts this bet.
  • Sonoko, after knowing that Makoto will be defending the jewel alone, makes a deal with Kaito Kid. She will allow Kid to impersonate her during his mission (in order to test whether Makoto can distinguish between the real and the fake Sonoko), and in return, Kid is not to harm Makoto (as he has an upcoming karate tournament).
  • Makoto manages to recognize that the impersonated Sonoko is fake. Upon asking him, he blushes shyly and says that Kid's ring finger is longer than his index finger, unlike Sonoko. Sonoko is reasonably disappointed by this explanation.
  • Makoto also manages to guard the jewel, and Tomoko fulfills her promises and lets him continue his relationship with Sonoko. She remarks that he will be an easy target of bullying.
