Part 1

Deciding to go bowling after they are rained out for tennis, Ran, Sonoko, Masumi and Conan are met by Makoto, who engages Sera in a fight after mistaking her for a boy interested in Sonoko. After this is straightened out, we learn that he was attacked by teacher Masahiro Tanba, who was drunk. His coworker Sunami Masaki took him to the car to calm down. Makoto soon leaves to nap in the car, not finding bowling to be his strong suit. After a while, math teacher Michiko Monna becomes worried about Tanba, and in going to check on him, finds him missing. They all check around the local bars, but the missing teacher is found drowned in a portable toilet, and Makoto becomes the prime suspect due to the strength required for such a feat. He also had the opportunity, remaining in the parking lot during the estimated time of death.

Conan clears Makoto's name through Sleeping Kogoro, and identifies the colleague of the victim Sunami Masaki as the culprit. Masaki locked the door and used makeshift kerosene candles to burn the oxygen out of the porta-potty, causing the water from the rain to fill in and rise, drowning the victim. Since Masaki is a science teacher, only she could have done it. First, Masaki brought Tanba to the parking lot under the excuse that she was taking him to the car. Then, Masaki told Tanba that she forgot something and told him to take shelter in the porta-potty until she returned. When Tanba did that, Masaki knocked him out with the stun gun, then tied him to the toilet seat with his belt to keep him from standing. Masaki put the 4 makeshift kerosene candles on the self above him, locked the door with a padlock and posted an "out of service" sign on the door. Masaki continued to duct tape the cracks and used a towel on the drain to keep the water from being drained. She lied about Tanba sleeping in the car: Masaki waited for the water to get stagnant. Masaki knew that Monna would go check on Tanba out of worry. So, while everybody was looking for Tanba, Masaki ensureed the water gathered well enough, took away the sign on the door and removed the lock. Masaki proceeded to light fire on the cans and continued to tape the door. What will follow is, the water will flood the porta-potty and Tanba drowns as a result.

Sunami's motive was to avenge her best friend's, who was Michiko's younger sister, death. Her best friend's goodbye text wasn't about eloping, but of double suicide by drowning as her parents opposed their marriage, and Tanba let her die alone and ran way instead of trying to stop her. Sunami discovered the truth when the drunk Tanba confessed that he was too scared to commit suicide with his lover and had since been blaming himself for his own cowardice. With a mixed feeling of anger and sympathy, she decided to murder him the same way her best friend had died, and send him to the next world to be with her.
