Situation
Mitsuhiko, Ayumi, and Genta happened to witness a quarrel taking place in front of an elderly actor selection venue, where two aged retirees, who were named Makio Yuida and Kozo Yuida respectively, were involved. To ascertain further details, the three of them from the Detective Boys visited Kozo and learned the fact that Kozo was chosen to be the elderly actor immediately, which aroused Mistuhiko some Sherlock Holmes "canon" which was related to the Red-Headed League short story. Accordingly, he suspected that Kozo might be drawn into a gigantic fraud, having similar routines with the Sherlock Holmes story. However, as they arrived at Kozo's home, nothing queer was noticed.
Kozo mentioned that his brother and he both had a teapot which was inherited from their father; recently he received a letter expressing his desire to purchase both their teapots. Soon, Mitsuhiko noticed something off from the letter: even though the sender address was written to be in Kyoto, the post stamp was clearly from Tokyo.
At the same time, Conan and Haibara were searching for the rest of the people, but precisely encountered Detective Nakamura stalking Makio at the back. When the Detective Boys liaised with each other, they inquired Makio about the teapot, yet were blasted away by him promptly. While leaving Makio's home, the Detective Boys met Ami Kimura, who was Makio's neighbour. She disclosed that Makio often talked about his journeys at the veranda, despite their unfamiliarity. Ayumi then noticed the cocoon on Kimura's hand, and the gloves in her pocket; as such, she surmised that Kimura is a manga artist.
Successfully, a serial robbery case happening persistently in second-hand stores caught their attention - importantly, the head of the robbery gang were still yet to be captured. In the meantime, Conan noticed Detective Takagi and Detective Chiba, who were again on a stakeout; according to their observations, Makio is most likely that head of robbers. Mistuhiko continued this deduction and speculated that his proceeding target is Kozo. The Detective Boys thus hurried to Kozo's house, but Kozo declared that he had just received another letter, and it also came with a ticket to Kyoto (which was to be used when the transaction was completed).
At night, Mitsuhiko discovered Kozo, who was sneakily following Makio. They all saw the fact that Makio opened the door of his apartment, but he then hesitated, and returned to his house immediately. Kozo was then instigated to contact his brother Makio, which on the phone Makio disclosed that "he needed money currently, since he now depends 'on credit' to make a living (ツケで暮らしていて), and would approach Kozo in turn". From what Mistuhiko had heard, he noticed the strangeness: normally Makio calls Kozo's actual name, but in the phone call, the appellation was changed to "brother"; as such, Makio was trying to explain his relation-ship with Kozo. In addition to that, "ツケ" is a terminology in the game of go, meaning adjacent to enemy. This manifests that Makio was in danger so Detective Chiba went to rescue him by heading upstairs.
