The success of the serial went beyond expectation and the sleep rural area became a popular spot where female visitors tied red handkerchieves all over the woods, spoiling Sonoko's scheme to lure Makoto for a romantic rendezvous. They encountered a man who claimed to be part of the TV serial crew. He explains that he was the one who gave the scriptwriter the idea of the red handkerchief tied to a tree in these mountains, because he had spotted one when he was searching for a place to film. Because of the series' popularity, he had been tasked to answer fan requests. Today he had been commissioned by a fan to find the exact location of the tree with the original red handkerchief, that inspired the show. He asked Ran and Sonoko to leave a message for the fan in a guestbook at an inn, where the fan is staying. He tells them to sign the message 'Hozumi' in katakana. Ran and Sonoko agrees and leaves the message. Shortly afterwards, Hozumi was discovered, stabbed dead, at the spot.

+ | <spoiler>Conan deduced the cause of the murder and the culprit: '''Tatsuzo Watanuki'''. Some time ago, Watanuki killed someone and buried the body under a tree in the mountains. He marked the spot with a red handkerchief so that he could later dig up the body and get rid of it (if necessary). Unfortunately, the red handkerchief became the inspiration for a scene in the TV series, and as a result fans came to the place where the scene had been shot and tied up their own red handkerchiefs (imitating the series), making it impossible for Watanuki to find the real spot. He contacted Hozumi, who was the one responsible for using the red handkerchief in the drama, and paid him to find the real spot. Hozumi found the spot, but he also discovered the body; he thus attempted to blackmail Watanuki, which got himself killed. The reason why Hozumi wrote his name in Katakana is because that in Kanji it can be misread as August 1th (and this is why the police couldn't find his name on the crew list). The real spot where the body was buried could easily be found because the film crew was filming at a entirely different spot (they didn't want to take down the Watanuki's handkerchief as it that inspired the drama and they didn't want to catch it on film either). Conan confronted Watanuki at the murder site and planned to anaesthetize him with his wristwatch, but he (and Ran and Sonoko, who, out of worry, came to the mountains to look for him) soon found to their horror that Watanuki was not alone.
