Contents
Background
Toshiya Yajima was a professional karuta player living in a private mansion in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, close to Mount Hiei.[2] He was born as the second son of the owner of Yajima Shuzō (矢島酒造), a sake brewery in Nada Ward (灘区), Kobe City.[3] Yajima then became a member of the Satsuki-Kai (皐月会), a karuta club for competitive players. Two years ago, he became the reigning champion of the Satsuki Cup (皐月杯争奪戦), one of the most prestigious karuta tournaments. The previous year, he kept his title after defeating Koji Sekine again. While practicing for this year's Satsuki Cup, Yajima watched footage of a game from the previous year's high school division Satsuki Cup between Momiji Ooka and Sayoko Wachi and noticed blood on the karuta cards used by Momiji.
Personality
Yajima has a very cunning and logical personality, having found out about the bloodstains in a fast-paced video and concocting a plan to expose Achiwa by inviting Kogoro. He is able to find small details and his high intelligence is proved by his consecutive victories. However, he is also a very manipulative person, as he tried to blackmail Achiwa.[4]
He speaks in the Kansai dialect.
Appearance
Yajima is a tall and skinny man with long black hair and a thin pointy nose. He is only seen wearing a dark kimono.

Plot overview
After realizing that the bloodstains on the borders of the karuta cards were likely the missing Nagoro's bloodstains, Yajima began blackmailing Achiwa. He also planned a TV program with Nichiuri TV where he would be a guest along with Achiwa and Kogoro. The plan would involve him bringing up the legendary karuta cards and showing the bloodstains to Kogoro to make him realize that Achiwa has killed someone. Before 6 AM [1 PM in the novel] on the day of the broadcast, Yajima warms up in the annex of his mansion by playing karuta by himself while listening to a DVD of the previous year's high school Satsuki Cup. He also planned to meet with Sekine at 6 AM [1 PM in the novel] to discuss the upcoming tournament. However, the one who enters the building is someone else, Kensuke Achiwa (or maybe Togo Kaieda). Before he has any time to react, he is struck by a blow to the head. He falls on the ground and realizing his fate, grabs a karuta card. The second blow kills him. The culprit then sees Yajima's hand still clasping the card and flicks the card away before leaving the house. Several hours later, in the late evening, his body is discovered and the Kyoto police arrives.[4]
Relationships analysis
Koji Sekine
Sekine is Yajima's closest rival and both have had a fierce fight for the title of champion. Sekine is from the former Nagoro-Kai (名頃会), which triggers more tension between both players. However, it seems that above all, their relationship is friendly, since Sekine vowed to make Yajima proud after his death. The meeting on the day of his death was also probably to tell him the truth behind Nagoro's disappearance.
Kensuke Achiwa
On the appearance, Achiwa and Yajima have a very good relation, as Achiwa calls him "Yajima-kun", which implies a student-teacher type of relation. He was also a member of the Satsuki-Kai led by Achiwa. In fact, both did not like each other and Yajima tried to blackmail Achiwa. Unbeknownst to him, Achiwa also started his own plan to kill Yajima and he was thus taken by surprise.
Shikao Nagoro and the Nagoro-Kai
Since more than five years ago, Yajima has been a fierce critic of Shikao Nagoro, who led an elitist clique of karuta players and would always challenge other players. When he threatened to disband the Satsuki-Kai, Yajima criticized him and asked for the disestablishment of the Nagoro-Kai. He later realizes that Nagoro did not disappear but was killed and thus wanted the truth to be known. He is not aware of Nagoro's true motive for challenging Satsuki Achiwa. He has high respect for Momiji Ooka, who used to be Nagoro's student.
Trivia
- His last name Yajima (矢島) means "arrow" (矢) and "island" (島). It is the 438th most popular surname in the country and is most popular in the central western area of the country, but is uncommon in the Kyoto region.[5] His first name stands for "excellence" (俊) and "increasing/forever" (弥). It has different possible readings, the most popular being Toshiya. Other readings include Shunya and Toshimi.[6]
- He is voiced in Japanese by Hideo Ishikawa, who comes from Hyogo Prefecture and thus speaks the Kansai dialect. Ishikawa voiced a few other background characters in the main series and in Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba, the adaptation of Gosho Aoyama's first manga Yaiba.[7] His English voice actor Grant George also voices Muga Iori, Momiji's butler, in the same movie.[8]
