Plot
Conan explains the circumstances of the case to traffic police officer Chihaya Hagiwara. He admits that things like the tracking glasses and the detective badge sound a bit implausible coming from a kid, but Chihaya only replies that if Conan says it, it must have happened that way. She tells Ran and Kogoro to go back to the restaurant to tell Nanjou not to show himself in public. If the kidnappers realize that they kidnapped the wrong person, they will probably kill him. For Conan, Chihaya gets a helmet from one of her subordinates and takes him along on her motorcycle as a passenger, so she can use his tracking glasses to track the criminals.
Conan talks to Professor Agasa again by detective badge. When the female kidnapper instructed the male kidnapper to shoot Agasa in the leg, the man wanted to know if it would not be a problem if Agasa died. The woman only replied that they had five hours after his death. From this, Conan and Agasa conclude that the kidnappers need him for iris recognition[1], which can be done even five hours after a person dies. Since this system is often used in safes, there is now little doubt that the kidnappers are targeting Nanjou's safe. In addition, Agasa overheard the woman say that they could change something at any time. Conan first thinks that the kidnappers could change the car and tells Agasa to stay calm so that the kidnappers don't find the detective badge. However, the kidnappers have already become suspicious about how Conan was able to track the car and decide to search the trunk and Agasa again.
On the motorcycle, Chihaya is told by radio that the police have set up checkpoints at the exits of the highway, so the kidnappers can no longer escape. But Conan is worried because Agasa has not responded in a while and the detective badge signal is not moving. They finally find the badge on the shoulder of the highway, and it seems that the kidnappers have found it and removed it from the car. As a result, there is now a possibility that they drove off the highway before the checkpoints were in place. Chihaya asks for the license plate of the car; Conan memorized it, but it was fake, as the "Shi (し)" character is illegal on license plates in Japan[2]. He finds said fake license plate not far from the detective badge on the shoulder. Chihaya concludes that that "something" that the kidnappers could change was the license plate. She notes that Conan has now run out of options for pursuit, but Conan listens to the microphone on his glasses and replies that he still has an option, and that it is too early to give up. Conan's words and determination remind Chihaya of her brother Kenji Hagiwara.
The additional possibility turns out to be the microphone that Conan has in his tracking glasses[3]. Because Agasa's glasses also have such a microphone installed in them, which the professor activated after the kidnappers took away his detective badge, even before they could incapacitate him with a taser. With his glasses, Conan can pick up the audio signal from Agasa's bug, and through the ambient noise they can continue to track the car. Chihaya says that Conan reminds her of her younger brother, but Conan does not hear her words properly because of the noise on the highway.
In the underground garage of the restaurant, Ran and Kogoro inform Sonoko about the situation. They also find an elderly couple in a car, who were stunned with tasers. This allowed the kidnappers to get into the restaurant, and bypass the two-year-long waitlist. Nanjou previously bragged on social media about planning to go at Déesse du Vent that day. Ran wonders what kind of people would do such a cruel thing, and promptly gets the answer from Jugo Yokomizo, who just arrived at the scene: people wanted for robbery-murder. The kidnappers are Daiya Chien and Rokue Chien, a married couple whom the police have been able to identify perfectly from surveillance cameras and interviews with restaurant staff. Meanwhile, the police also took Nanjou into custody for questioning and to prevent him from appearing in public. Yokomizo wonders where Conan has gone, since he is always with the "grim-reaper family". Ran tells him that Conan is looking for the perpetrators together with Chihaya Hagiwara, which slightly shocks Yokomizo, as he knows her personally.
Conan and Chihaya were able to follow the route of the car, which was approaching a police checkpoint, through the microphone noise. The perpetrators should be trapped now. But at the checkpoint, the perpetrators' car, a white Toyota Camry, was not found. While numerous Camrys came to the checkpoint, none of them were white, according to a traffic cop. From the ambient noise, Conan knows that the car was parked next to a convenience store for a long time, and wonders what it was all about. At this, the traffic cop remembers that a driver passing the checkpoint had said something strange. The driver wondered if there was an event going on here somewhere with VIPs, because he had seen someone buying 20 bottles of hot green tea at a supermarket. Therefore, the driver thought the checkpoint was because of some big event, and the bottles were for the event crew, but the person did not buy any food except for the bottles, which the driver found very strange. In addition, the person had bought a dark blue umbrella, even though it was not particularly sunny today, nor was there any rain to worry about[4]. The 20 bottles of hot green tea and the dark blue umbrella give Conan a hint. He saw through how the perpetrators were able to pass through the checkpoint, because the perpetrators did not mean the license plate when they talked about "changing", but something else completely. In his mind, Conan asks the professor to hang on a little longer, as he will now come to his rescue.
