Biography
Masaharu Sato started his acting career by joining a children's theater company as a child actor[3]. He later joined the drama club in junior high and high school, and in his first year of high school, he took the lead role and won fifth place in a metropolitan competition[3].
He continued to act when he was a student at Komazawa University's Faculty of Commerce[2], but dropped out of college to form a theater group, and after attending the Aoyama Sugisaku Memorial Actor Training School[2], he joined the theater company Sogen[2], where he worked part-time while working as a stage actor[3]. Later, Akira Kamiya, who was a member of the same drama club at the same high school[4] and had started voice acting, asked him if he would like to try it. He was married and went in for an interview without an exam, thinking that he will "give it a try," and joined Aoni Productions and began her career as a voice actor[3],[2].
In the TV animation "The Galaxy Express 999", that ran from 1978 to 1981, he was a regular on the show and had the opportunity to take on various roles, which opened his eyes to the fun of voice acting[2]. After "Galaxy Express 999," he was selected for a major role, and since then his roles have been connected one after another[2]. He joined the Yaiba voice cast in 1993 as the voice of Musashi Miyamoto. He participated in Detective Conan for the first time in 1996 as the cuplrit in episode 4: The Coded Map of the City Case, and would play many one-time characters in the series. In December 2022, he gets his first notable role in Detective Conan, in episode 12 of the Hanzawa the Criminal anime as the voice of Jirokichi Suzuki.
He is a lecturer at the Osaka University of Arts, Department of Broadcasting, Voice Acting Course[5]. He is good friends with fellow voice actors Akira Kamiya (Kogoro Mouri in DC) and Ryo Horikawa (Heiji Hattori in DC and Takeshi Onimaru in Yaiba). His younger brother Kimihiko Sato (佐藤 公彦, 1952-2017) was a singer.
