Plot

The suspects insist on their innocence. Without the murder weapon, a flagpole, little could be proven. But the masked Heiji says that the murder weapon was not a flagpole at all. According to his conclusions, the perpetrator removed the flagpole next to the corpse and smeared the flag itself with the victim's blood to create a false trail, but the actual murder weapon was something else. Kazuha enthusiastically praises the supposed "Komoto", whereupon Ran tries to point out to her that Heiji is probably the one under the mask. But in private, Kazuha reveals that she's had Heiji figured out all along - after all, she's known him since childhood and recognizes him even with a disguised voice. In fact, the real Komoto would probably only sound like Heiji when he sings, but in normal conversation the real Komoto sounds different. Kazuha is only pretending to be fooled in order to lure Heiji out of his shell - so that he will finally confess his feelings to her, Ran suspects.

The suspects want to know what the murder weapon is instead of the flagpole. Conan explains that the strange noise earlier gave them a clue. After the noise, an eye fell out of the snowman with the bucket on his head. Something in the bucket fell on the snowman's head. It is a block of ice in the shape of the bucket, as Takagi discovers by examining the bucket. The ice began to melt and the block of ice fell down. Heiji explains that the perpetrator used the filled bucket from the tap above the stairs as a murder weapon in the heat of the moment. The perpetrator then placed the bucket upside down on the snowman's head as camouflage.

However, Sato interjects that all three suspects could have done this. Another clue to the perpetrator is the wound on the victim's head. It ran from the top right to the bottom left, suggesting that they were right-handed. Due to the previous provocation by Kawano and Jinnai, Heiji realized that both are left-handed, as Kawano used a left-handed fighting stance, while Jinnai touched his right cheek with his left hand - whereas Tsurumi had adjusted her glasses with her right hand. She is the culprit, says Heiji. Tsurumi counters: right-handed people are not uncommon, that's not enough proof. She was also chained up with handcuffs and a bicycle lock and couldn't escape. But Conan demonstrates a trick with which the handcuffs can be removed from the bicycle lock.

Now Sato reconstructs the crime: Tsurumi was arrested by Hidaka, chained up and escaped with the trick. During her escape, however, she was seen again by Hidaka, whom she killed in the heat of the moment. Although she could have escaped, she had to assume that Hidaka had already reported her arrest, which is why her absence at the scene of the crime had certainly led to a manhunt. So she laid the false trail with the murder weapon and hurriedly returned to the lamppost by the parking lot and chained herself up again to be exonerated for the murder by the investigation. But now there is no escape, says Sato: the forensic experts will find that the wound on Hidaka's head matches the bucket, a luminol test will prove the blood on the bucket and Tsurumi's fingerprints on the bucket, which she was unable to remove in her haste, will make her guilt indisputable. Tsurumi breaks down and curses her situation. She is taken away by Takagi and Sato.

After the case is over, Conan asks Heiji what he thinks of first when he hears a silly name. Heiji points to Conan himself. Conan says dryly that he is not talking about himself. Heiji then remembers how Conan told him about the case when the Kaito Kid used an anagram of his thief name as a cover name, moving the syllables "Ka I To U Ki d(dzu) To" to make "Ka Tsu(d) Ki Do I To U". A joking, almost mocking name, Heiji thinks. "An anagram then...!" Conan thinks to himself. Kazuha and Ran join the two boys and remind "Komoto" that he has to hurry to get a lucky charm at the shrine, when suddenly there is a joyful shriek from the queue in front of them. The real Hyoga Komoto has appeared at the shrine and was immediately recognized by his fans. Heiji and Conan now also notice that Komoto's voice sounds very different when he speaks than when he sings. Kazuha now comes to Heiji, rips the mask off his face and says that she has seen through him from the beginning. Now Heiji goes on the counter-offensive and admits to wanting to get a lucky charm at the shrine because there is someone the god of relationships needs to help him with. Kazuha could already guess that much, but now she only wants to hear one thing from Heiji: Which girl Heiji wants to end up with the lucky charm. After all, she is Heiji's childhood friend and something of a big sister who has to look after Heiji, so she has a right to know. An argument ensues between the two with reddened cheeks. In his thoughts, Conan realizes that he was right: instead of a relationship good luck charm, Heiji would rather have a good luck charm to ward off disaster.

Adaptations

The Inauspicious Matchmaking (episodes 1085-1086)

  • The anime add some original scenes not in the manga:
  • Conan asks Ran if he can go for a walk rather than standing in line, before go to approach Heiji.
  • Conan thinking the reason why the suspects stay at the shrine and if the flagpole is really the weapon.
  • Conan wondering if Kazuha would have known Heiji is the man behind the mask, and what Heiji will do if she knows.
  • Conversation between Conan and Kazuha about what Heiji might be doing at the moment.
  • While the cases where Heiji attempted to confess Kazuha were mentioned in the manga, the anime add flashback scenes of those cases.
  • In the manga, Shinichi is shown in the background while Conan is thinking about the mysterious sound. In the anime it is not shown.
  • The anime change how Sato deal with Kawano when he got provoked by Heiji. Instead of hitting Kawano on the head, Sato pulls his ear.
  • The anime add more reaction from Shamoto when she heard Kawano is responsible of her current condition. She tried to kick Kawano several times, and when Takagi tried to calm them down, Shamoto kicked Takagi several times.
