<spoiler>Conan gathers the police and Kogoro to the scene and tranquilizes Kogoro to reveal that the real handbag actually sank to the bottom of the river and that '''Saki Nijimura''' had staged the kidnapping and the ransom note. The real handbag had been rigged with a weight, so that when the bag was thrown into the water it sank to the bottom rather then be swept away. Afterwards she put a fake brand handbag near the river along with some scuba gear to create the illusion that the kidnapper had already taken the money and fled.

Saki confesses and reveals that the president had been selling off her designs for the handbags to the counterfeit companies and that he had gambled their family into debt. The president had come up with this kidnapping scheme himself in order to get himself out of debt, however unbeknownst to him, his wife was planning to use this entire scheme to kill him. Saki states that she had poured her heart and soul into designing and making these bags, but her husband only saw this as a business opportunity and got them into debt so she decided to kill him.
