Sugita (杉田 Sugita ), commonly referred to as Detective Sugita (杉田刑事 Sugita-keiji ), is a character in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan.
Background
Sugita is a young detective (刑事 keiji ) in plain clothes from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, Division One Investigations. He loves Detective Sato and is thus jealous of Detective Takagi, much often to boycott along with several other officers their dates. He is always awed by Superintendent Matsumoto.
He meets Conan Edogawa in several cases and his great deduction impresses him only during Detective Takagi's kidnapping, but Conan justifies himself saying which, when he consulted Shinichi Kudo earlier on the phone, that's what he told him.[2] In the end, along with Haibara, Conan shows to the police the trick used by the culprit, even if he making them to believe that is Professor Agasa to find the evidence.[3]
In a previous case, along with other officers, he had to save Conan by Ryousuke Oomine, a murder suspect who kidnapped Kayoko Yuuki, a 5 years old girl, at Haido's shipping mall and attempted to escape, but as a result Conan successfully rescued the girl and was taken hostage as a substitute. As Inspector Megure orders them, the hostage's life is their priority.[4]

Inspector Shiratori tells to Inspector Megure that they can know where the camera signal is coming from if they let the Cyber Police handle it, but Conan tells to him that they don't think he can anytime soon. The only thing they can investigate on the outside of the tablet is the "On/Off" switch. Anything else, including the touch screen, power button, and the charging connecter have been rendered useless. However, in Inspector Shiratori opinion, if they open the tablet, they can recharge it directly from the inside: if they get the data from the hard drive, they could figure out where the signal is coming from. But, in Conan opinion, after they take it apart, what happens if they can't see Detective Takagi anymore? The culprit is smart enough to modify the buttons and make the touch screen useless. It's safe to assume there's a trap set to shut it down completely if they mess with it. There's another way to avoid that risk by using the tablet's network provider, but this criminal used an overseas server, so it's most likely impossible to find out with so little time.
