Kogoro deduced from the victim's dying message, JUN, that it points to Mina Kurokawa. This is because June is also the dry month (Minazuki) and she was born in June, which earns a scold from Mina herself. Conan then puts Kogoro to sleep and begins his own deduction.

The culprit is Manami Nagazawa. The message isn't JUN, because the computer's keyboard was set to romanji mode instead of hiragana when Daizo typed out the message. The message in hiragana spells out "Ma-Na-Mi", which points to Manami herself. Further evidence indicates that the strangely wiped blood on the floor matches the stain on her sock. Manami confesses that Daizo was responsible for the failure of her husband's surgery and his subsequent death because Daizo was drunk before performing the surgery. She couldn't find any witnesses because everyone was scared of Daizo. Thus Manami came to work at Daizo's house as a housekeeper to eventually murder him on the day of her husband's death anniversary.</spoiler>

The actual murderer was Manami Nagazawa, the housekeeper of the Kurokawa family. The message wasn't supposed to be "JUN" because the computer keyboard was set to romaji instead of hiragana when the dying victim typed out his message. Switched to hiragana, the message reads "Ma-Na-Mi". Conan also makes Manami show everyone a bloodstain on her sock and she confesses. Her motive was revenge for her late husband, who died after a surgery performed by Daizo while he was drunk. Manami says she tried to find witnesses that Daizo got drunk before the surgery, but his colleagues were too scared to come forward. So, she decided to work for Daizo as a housekeeper and planned her revenge for this day, the first anniversary of her husband's death.</spoiler>

While sorting mail at Professor Agasa's house, Conan finds a strange letter (an invitation to a tea party) which is addressed to Shinichi Kudo. The letter was sent from a man named Teiji Moriya who is a famous architect. Conan calls Ran Mouri using his Voice-Changing Bowtie to mimic Shinichi's voice and tells her that he can't go to the tea party and asks if she would go in his place. He tells her to bring her dad, Kogoro Mouri, and "that kid" (referring to Conan).

The letter was sent by famous architect Teiji Moriya. Conan decides to call Ran Mouri using his Voice-Changing Bowtie and tells her about the invitation, asking her to go to the party in his stead because he is "too busy with his case" and that Kogoro and "that boy who lives with you" can join her as well.

Ran says she will do it but only if he goes to a movie with her on Saturday. Conan tries to make her change the date, but she is determined that it has to be on May 3rd. She then asks him what his favorite color is: red or blue. He says that it's red. Conan leaves the pay phone and, while walking home, tries to figure out why Ran wants the date to be on May 3rd. While on the way home he meets Inspector Megure who introduces him to Ninzaburo Shiratori.
+
Ran accepts, under the condition that Shinichi joins her for a movie the following Saturday. Conan, horrified, tries to get her to agree to a later date but she insists it has to be on Saturday, May 3. She also asks "Shinichi" if he prefers red or blue. Conan, confused, replies red is his favourite colour and says goodbye to Ran. He has no idea why Ran insists on meeting Shinichi on May 3. On the way home, he meets Inspector Megure who introduces him to another constable working in his department, Ninzaburo Shiratori.

While eating dinner with Ran and Kogoro, Ran tells Conan that she's taking Shinichi to the movies on May 3rd and when it hits midnight she will give her gift to him (which is a red polo shirt). Conan then realizes that May 4th is his birthday.

At home, Ran tells Conan and Kogoro that she is going on a date with Shinichi on May 3. She wants to take Shinichi to a late showing at the cinema and, at midnight, surprise him with a red polo shirt because he said red was his favourite colour. Conan suddenly remembers that Shinichi birthday is on May 4. Ran also explains about the tea party invitation and Kogoro isn't exactly enthusiastic about going, so Conan comes up with a trick to convince him.

Conan tricks Kogoro into going to the tea party as Kogoro doesn't want to go in the first place. They meet Teiji Moriya and tell him that Shinichi couldn't make it but that Kogoro is another famous detective. Moriya gives everyone a quiz and asks them to solve it. Conan is the first to solve it, so he gets to go to see Moriya's gallery with Ran. While observing the pictures, Ran tells Moriya that she is going to the movies with Shinichi and is going to be watching it in one of the buildings he designed.

Ran, Kogoro and Conan attend the tea party at Teiji Moriya's house and explain that Shinichi couldn't make it, but Kogoro came instead, delighting their host at having "another famous detective" as his guest. Moriya greets his guests and gives them a riddle, telling everyone that whoever solves it first gets a private tour of his gallery. Conan quickly figures it out and Moriya takes him and Ran upstairs. They chat with the famous architect and Ran says that she is going on a date with Shinichi and they will go watch a film in a building designed by Moriya.

The next day, Ran goes out to get some food while Conan goes to Agasa's house, trying to think of what to do for his movie "date" with Ran. A news station on T.V. reports that someone stole a large quantity of octogen, which is the main component for plastic explosives. Right after the report, Professor Agasa receives a phone call asking for Shinichi. The caller, who is using a voice changing device, tells Shinichi that he is the one who stole the octagon and tells him to give him his mobile phone number. Conan tells him his number and the man instructs him to go to Greenbelt Park or else the kids will die.

The following day, Ran goes shopping and Conan meets Professor Agasa, asking for his help because he has no idea what to do about his date with Ran. Agasa's TV is on and they watch the news. Someone stole a large quantity of octane from a plant, a gas used to make plastic explosives. Worried, Agasa switches the TV off and his phone rings suddenly. Someone using a voice changing device asks for Shinichi so Agasa hands his phone over. The unknown caller explains that he is the one who stole the octane and asks for Shinichi's phone number. Conan gives it to him and the man tells him "go to Greenbelt Park or the kids will die."

Conan uses his skateboard and rushes to Greenbelt Park where he finds Genta Kojima, Ayumi Yoshida, and Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya playing with a remote controlled plane. Mitsuhiko tells Conan that a man with a mustache and a beard gave it to them. Conan notices that there is a bomb on the plane, so he takes the controller away from Mitsuhiko but he refuses to give it to Conan since it's Genta's turn. Conan tells them that there is a bomb on it and they drop it and the antenna breaks. The plane begins flying uncontrollably, so Conan uses his Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes and kicks the controller into the plane, blowing it up. Conan then realizes that this isn't a prank because those were plastic explosives. He then gets another call telling him about another bomb.

Conan is able to figure out that the bombs are Between the Rail Tracks (X the XX) based on the bomber's 2 warnings, namely not to slow down below 60km/h and that the bombs would go off once the sun set. Location: Kurokawa household
Victim: Daizo Kurokawa
Age: 62 years old
Cause of death: Blunt-force trauma
Suspects: Mina Kurokawa, Daisuke Kurokawa, and Manami Nagazawa
While the victim sat at his computer, the culprit snuck up behind him and hit him over the head with a statue.

Kogoro - wrongly, of course - deduces that the dying message pointed to the victim's wife Mina, saying that "JUN" means June and since June is also called "minazuki" or dry month and Mina was born in June, he wanted to leave a hint that he was murdered by his own wife. Mina is furious. Conan hits Kogoro with his stun-wristwatch and begins explaining the actual facts of the case to the police and the three suspects.

Conan finds an unusual letter in his mail, an invitation to a party addressed to Shinichi Kudo.

Kogoro is pondering Moriya's quiz.

Ran, Kogoro and Conan attend the tea party at Teiji Moriya's house and explain that Shinichi couldn't make it, but Kogoro came instead, delighting their host at having "another famous detective" as his guest.
