Plot
Kogoro and Ran Mouri arrived at the Tani residence in Yayoi with Conan Edogawa in tow, where it becomes clear that Mr. Tani's daughter, Akiko Tani, got kidnapped. Conan is quick to find several inconsistencies in what Mr. Asou, the Tani family's butler, told about what happened when Akiko got taken away. Asou admits that it was all a ruse when, suddenly, a seemingly real kidnapper calls Mr. Tani and demands his ransom money...
Continuity
- Waning Crescent Moon 🌘
- Akiko Tani was born 10 years ago.
- The (fictional) rival companies Mr. Tani mentions are "Kadobeni" and "Yotsui", which later on get bigger roles in the series: Kadobeni is mentioned later in this volume in the case with Yoko Okino as the place Akiyoshi Fujie worked at, while Yotsui plays a signicant part in a case in volume 9.
- Third chapter of the so-called "Conan Arc", a fan-coined term.
Referenced in
- The Same Person (Manga: 27): When Ran Mouri thinks about all the times Conan Edogawa acted unusual, she remembers the moment from this chapter when he notified her father about the watchdogs of the Tani family and the inconsistency in Mr. Asou's testimony because of their behavior.
- Wealthy Daughter Murder Case (Manga: 87-91): The party Conan, Ran and Kogoro get invited to is organized by the rich Yotsui family, whose company was mentioned by Mr. Tani as one of his rivals back during this chapter.
Cameos
- The Tani family's name is taken from Gosho Aoyama's assistant Yutaka Tani.
- Mr. Asou's, the Tani family's butler, name is also taken from an assistant of Gosho, in this case Keiji Asou.
Real Life Models
Yayoi
The Yayoi District Kogoro and Ran Mouri as well as Conan Edogawa drive to for this case and where the Tani family lives is a real district of Tokyo in the Bunkyō Ward.

Shōnen Sunday Q&A
Every issue of the Shōnen Sunday features a question asked by the magazine to the manga artists featured in it. The one accompanying this chapter was:
Of goods recently bought, the favorite is
"Although this was a gift, (my favorite is) the wooden sword with Kenjuro Kurogane's name on it."
(Kenjuro Kurogane is the main character's father in Yaiba.)

Trivia
- The traditional Samurai house of the Tani family strongly resembles the one the Mine family owns in Yaiba. It's possible Gosho Aoyama reused some reference models here.
- The fact about the guard dog not barking creating a contradiction in the culprit's explanation is taken directly from a Sherlock Holmes short story, The Adventure of Silver Blaze.
- The kidnapper demands 3,000,000 Yen at the end. This would currently be ~28,000 US-$ (May 2020).
