Amanda Hughes (アマンダ・ヒューズ ,Amanda Hyūzu) is a character in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan.

Background

Amanda Hughes was killed by APTX 4869 seventeen years prior to the current timeline, when she was 81-year-old. She apparently had contacts to two American intelligence agencies, the FBI and CIA. She was so powerful in the US that Black Organization tried to threaten her. It's said that she was a contender to be the next president of the United States. She had a close bodyguard called Rachel Asaka, who was as important as a daughter to her. She was also a big fan of Kohji Haneda.

Plot overview

Kohji Haneda's Death Case (Manga: 948-950, Anime: 861-862)

She was first introduced along with Kohji. It's said that she was an elderly wealthy American who was killed seventeen years prior to the current timeline, she stayed in the same hotel as Kohji, and it was proved that she went to his room. The cause of her death could not be determined. Haibara has yet to confirm whether she saw her name on the APTX victim list or not.

Chess Tournament Murder Case (Manga: 1103-1109, Anime: TBD)

Seventeen years ago, Kohji went to USA for a chess competition. The night before the competition happened, Amanda Hughes, a fan of Kohji, visited and played chess with him. Amanda introduced Rachel Asaka, her bodyguard, to Kohji. She revealed Rachel is the daughter of Amanda's previous bodyguard who sacrificed himself to save Amanda from the killer's bullet, she raised and trained Rachel as her bodyguard. She had good martial arts and weapons skills, which made bad guys but both good ones couldn't approach her. Kohji said she was his ideal girlfriend and he also pointed out that Asaka's right eye's disease is Amaurosis Fugax. Rum hacked the hotel's cameras and used his left eye to recognize all Amanda's bodyguards in different places in the building and he had his men knock them all out. One of his man reported that Asaka and "a big man appears to be newly hired" are the only remain bodyguard, Rum lead a group of Black Organization members to Amanda's room. Asaka told Amanda that she couldn't contact any other bodyguard. Worrying something happened, Amanda lied to Asaka that she forgot a horse chess piece in Kohji's room and asked her to go there immediately as a favor. When Rum and his men came, Amanda said she met Rum when he was still a child fifty years ago and his nickname "Rum" is weird. Amanda told Rum she knew that they all did bad things under Renya Karasuma's order. She then asked how Rum and his men were able to knock out dozens of her most trustworthy bodyguards before revealing a Japanese police officer and SWAT would come soon. Rum revealed that his left eye's special ability helped him remember everything and the police wouldn't come because one newly-joined young woman in their organization used Amanda's voice to call off the phone call from the FBI. He then took one APTX 4869 out and threatened to kill Amanda to force Asaka appear to hold her as hostage and Amanda must join their organization. Amanda quickly swallowed the drug in order to protect Asaka. Threatening Amanda plan failed, Rum revealed to Amanda that "Rum" is not his nickname but the codename he got from his late father and quickly left to find Asaka, and he didn't notice that she left a dying message about Rum's dangerous eye with a horse piece and her wristwatch.

At the meantime, Kohji realized what happened, he asked Asaka to hide and he acted like he didn't know anything when the organization visited his room to find "an Asian-looking woman". Kohji persuaded Asaka to stay in his room for her safety but Asaka didn't want Kohji to be killed for helping her. Kohji knocked Asaka out with a stun gun and hid her in his bookshelf. Before getting unconscious, Asaka warned Kohji that the bad guys would kill him, he handed her his good luck charm - a bishop shogi piece and said "With the watchtower bishop, you can be sure of making a good move.I must carry my initial dream through to the end. (A better translate from its Kanji/Chinese characters meaning)". When the bad guys came, Rum noticed the books in bookshelf must have been touched so he wanted to check, Kohji told Rum he saw a piece of news including him gave a speech for Renya Karasuma thirty years ago to prevent him from checking the bookshelf, Rum let one of his man beat Kohji. Realizing Kohji would not reveal anything about Asaka, Rum decided to kill him. In his last breath, Kohji cut the mirror given to him by his mother to leave his dying message: CARASUMA.

The "big man appears to be newly hired" is Kuroda, who received a special mission meeting Amanda, realized something happened to Amanda because she didn't contact him when she was supposed to meet him that night, decided to find Amanda himself after the receptionist denied to give any information about her. When Kuroda found her room, Amanda was dead. He quickly ran into Kohji's room as Amanda had a meeting with Kohji that night and only found Kohji's dead body. The only thing he was able to do was take some pictures at the crime scenes. Asaka woke up and thought Kuroda was the one killed Kohji, she attacked him until she noticed Amanda's dying picture in his phone. This gave Kuroda a chance to knock Asaka out and he decided to carry her out of the hotel to protect her from the Black Organization, but not before informed the local police. Rum then realized Kohji hid Asaka in the bookshelf and noticed the bathroom was messed up badly, he tried to clear up the evidence but the bad guys had to run because the police were on their way. The organization chased after Kuroda after finding one of their men, who was knocked unconscious by Kuroda when he was trying to clean Kohji's room. While trying to get away from the bad guys, a car accident happened to Kuroda, Rum told his men to retreat because there were many people at the scene. Kuroda passed out, but Asaka managed to escape. The accident put Kuroda in a ten years long coma, it caused him to lose his right eye and his hair also turned white.
