Mikiko Hiramoto (枚本 未来子 Hiramoto Mikiko?) is a character in the movie franchise Detective Conan. She is a supporting character in Movie 21: The Crimson Love Letter.

Background

Mikiko Hiramoto is a second-year student at Kaiho Academy (改方学園 Kaihō Gakuen?), a private school in Osaka City. She is the captain of the karuta club and last year reached fourth place at the High School Satsuki Cup (高校生皐月杯争奪戦), a prestigious karuta competition for high-school karuta players. She is the only active player of the club[2]. She is also member of the larger karuta club, the Satsuki-Kai (皐月会).

Personality

Mikiko is a devoted and diligent student, as she has dedicated a lot of time to practice karuta. Her efforts paid off when she was able to reach 4th the previous year and when she was featured on a TV program by Nichiuri TV. She is persistent and somewhat stubborn, as she could not stop herself from going back in the building even when the threat was apparent. She is also dutiful as she explained thoroughly who the guests were to Kogoro.

Just like Heiji and Kazuha, she speaks in the Osakan dialect.

Appearance

Character design.

Mikiko is a short girl with square glasses and has green eyes. Her hair is tied in two pigtails and her bangs are stuck by blue hairpins. She is only seen wearing the Kaiho school uniform with brown loafers.

Plot overview

During a program hosted by Nichiuri-TV about karuta, she is invited to play against Momiji Ooka. For the occasion, her friends Kazuha and Heiji also attended the event at the Nichiuri HQ in Osaka. At the same time, they meet Conan's group, who happened to be there since Kogoro was invited to talk to important figures of the karuta world. After noticing Kogoro's complete incompetence in the matter, she tells him more about who Kensuke Achiwa and Toshiya Yajima are. Later, an order is made to evacuate the building due to a bomb threat. While evacuating, Mikiko runs back inside to retrive the precious Satsuki-Kai cards, but in the process, she injures her arm and gets Heiji, Kazuha and Conan involved, which could have potentially killed them. Later at the hospital, she apologizes for her selfish behaviour, but is sad that she cannot compete with an injured arm. She proposes that Kazuha participate in her stead, which her friend reluctantly agrees to. After her discharge, she goes back home to recover. Later, she meets back with her friend to check up on how her practice is doing, and is happy to meet the former karuta queen Shizuka Ikenami. A few days later, during the actual tournament, she sits in the audience with Shizuka, Ran and the others and cheers for Kazuha.

Relationships analysis

Kazuha Toyama

Mikiko and Kazuha.

Kazuha Toyama is a close friend of Mikiko and she supports her friend fully. This can be shown by how they embrace each other and how Kazuha accepts to join the tournament for her. Kazuha also showed to club practice for the karuta club a few times, which has helped Mikiko a lot, since the club is practically inexistent, and Mikiko has congratulated Karuta for her innate talent for karuta.

Heiji Hattori

Heiji and Mikiko seem to be on good terms, since they are classmates. Mikiko is aware that Kazuha likes him. She is a great fan of his mother Shizuka, who was once a reigning champion in the game.

Kensuke Achiwa

Mikiko has utmost for Achiwa, who is a very influential figure in the karuta field. She even goes as far as to save the cards for him, and does not hesitate to present him under a good light when Kogoro asks about who he is. Achiwa likewise thanks her for saving the cards and tells her to recover fast. Mikiko also respects the talent of Achiwa's late wife Satsuki.

Momiji Ooka

She does not seem to like Momiji, even though she maintains a cordial relationship with her during their regular meetups during tournaments. Her level in karuta is close to Momiji, but the latter is still a notch better than her. She thinks that Heiji should be Kazuha instead of Momiji.

Trivia

  • Her last name means "flat" (枚) and "origin/tree trunks" (本). It does not seem to be an actual last name in use, since it is not found in national databases[3]. Her first name means "not yet" (未), "come" (来) and "child" (子). The "miki" part also reads as "mirai" (未来), which means " near future".
  • She is voiced in Japanese by famous actress Riho Yoshioka, who was announced in February 2017, two months before the film's release[4]. Yoshioka herself comes from the Kyoto region and thus speaks the Kansai dialect.
