Background
Kensuke Achiwa is a man in his sixties or nearing his sixties living in Osaka City. He started a real estate business many decades ago and quickly became known as the real estate king of Naniwa[1]. As a passion, he also loved karuta and was a seasoned player, participating in tournaments. There, he met Satsuki, who would later become his wife, as well as the promising grandmaster Shikao Nagoro. A few years later, during a stay in Hong Kong, he meets Togo Kaieda, a man whose large stature would help him strengthen his influence in Osaka. Thus, Kaieda started taking care of his shady businesses while staying his secretary on the surface[2]. Since he preferred doing the karuta reading, he stopped being a player and remained a reader at the Satsuki Cup, a National karuta tournament founded by his wife's team, the Satsuki-kai. He would support her in full and have Kaieda drive them to each tournament in his freshly washed Toyota Crown[1].
As a member of the Satsuki-kai, he would face off the Nagoro-kai numerous times, the other main contender in the karuta field. The tension boiled to the point where 5 years ago, Nagoro challenged Satsuki to a duel, the result of which will determine which club will disband. On the day before the tournament, Nagoro convened to have Satsuki do a pre-challenge in the Satsuki Hall above the waterfalls of Achiwa Kaikan. After not hearing any news from his wife, Achiwa rushes to the hall where he discovers Nagoro's bloodied body and a desperate Satsuki next to him. Nagoro was way above her league despite all her practicing. In a burst of anger, she smashed his head with the radio playing the karuta readings. Achiwa and Kaieda decided to cover it up and the next day made up the case that Nagoro never showed up, and in the end, without its leader, the Nagoro-kai disbanded. Satsuki never recovered from the shock of what she had done, and her husband slowly helped take over the Satsuki-kai for her, until 3 years ago when she developped an incurable illness and was interned. 2 years ago, Satsuki died, and Kensuke had lost all will to live, except for keeping his wife's name unsullied.
A few months prior, following the previous year's Satsuki Cup, Toshiya Yajima, winner for the second row, was watching tape recordings of the High School Satsuki Cup and noticed blood traces on the karuta cards Momiji Ooka, one of the players grabbed. He then deduced there must have been something suspicious happening and made the link with Nagoro's disappearance five years ago. He started to blackmail Achiwa to find the truth. With Satsuki's name in danger, Achiwa had to make a plan, and he would make sure to get rid of everyone in his way.
Achiwa's plan
Achiwa wanted to get rid of everyone who would tarnish his wife's and many people were on his hit list :
- Toshiya Yajima, who started to blackmail him
- Koji Sekine, a former student of Nagoro and whose method of playing could compromise his secret
- Momiji Ooka, a former student of Nagoro whose method of playing is exactly like him and she would thus pick the same cards as him from the precious deck of the Satsuki-kai, in use during the murder five years ago. If the police were to investigate the blood, it could be determined to be his wife's.
- Togo Kaieda, an unfortunate collateral victim even though he is his accomplice. Since he would know too much, he would need to get rid of him too at the end.
- Two more elements he wanted to eliminate : The precious deck of cards of the Satsuki-kai, that had Nagoro's blood and possibly Satsuki's blood and fingerprints on it ; The Satsuki Hall itself, which could still have DNA evidence on the tatami mats, as well as Nagoro's body which he and Kaieda hid behind one of the walls in the rock.
He thus prepared six karuta cards which Nagoro used regularly to pin the crime on the missing but dead Nagoro, since he still thought Nagoro cheated during that fateful game and thought he did that to humiliate Satsuki. He would have Kaieda carry out the crimes for him while he is elsewhere, giving him an airtight alibi. He would also use bombs, since they would erase the evidence easier and could be remote-controlled, so even Kaieda would not be suspected. At the end, he would get rid of Kaieda and finally commit suicide in the bombing of the Satsuki Hall with that year's finalists to make it seem like Nagoro had finally finished his revenge. After all, all Achiwa cared about was Satsuki.
To give police clues and a track to follow, he would send letters to the Osaka Prefectural Headquarters before each crime with a karuta card attached to it[3].
Personality
Kensuke Achiwa is a charismatic and a leader-like person. He can easily direct people and make them listen to him, like with Kaieda, as well as his other staff, which he can send wherever whenever. His charisma also gave him quick power in the Osaka political and social spheres, and he is not questioned by others. He is also a good liar and manipulator, and hides his true intentions behind the pokerface of a charismatic old company owner.
His manipulation and control over others hide his true personality, that of a broken and insecure man, who is devoted to one thing and one thing only. This is the aspect that ended up breaking him in the end and forcing him to confess.
He speaks in the Kansai dialect.
Appearance
Achiwa is a tall well-built man with large shoulders befitted with a large head. His built is similar to that of his secretary's. He has thick dimples on his cheeks and a long pointy nose, an uncommon feature for the Japanese. He has slicked grey hair. He is only shown wearing formal suits, including the black with suit violet shirt and necktie seen throughout the movie. In the end of the movie, he is seen wearing a traditional kimono with a hakama, but without the traditional overcoat, the haori.

Trivia
- His last name means "ridge / the sound a" (阿), "knowledge" (知) and "wave" (波). It is a rare surname, mostly prevailing in Aichi other central Japanese prefectures, but has minor presence in Kansai, in Kyoto Prefecture. Its origin is from Achiwa village (阿知和村), Mikawa Province, where many samurai families originate from. The name of the village itself probably comes from Awa Province (阿波国). Other readings are Achiha, Achiba, Achina, Achinami and Ashinami, but the most popular readings are Achiwa and Achiha.[4] His first name means "study/sharpen" (研) and "assist/mediate" (介). It can also be read Kenkai[5].
- His voice actor, Osamu Saka, is from Osaka, and thus speaks in the Kansai dialect.
- Achiwa is first introduced as a character in the Animail journal of March 2017, and officially first appeared in the novel released 2 days prior to the theater release[6].
- His car is a dark blue 1997 Toyota Century [GZG50]. The license plate is 浪速 300, む • 4 86 (Naniwa 300, Mu - 4 86).
