Plot

Kyousuke Kabumoto lay collapsed in front of his room's door and did not respond to Conan and Heiji's calls or their knocking on the balcony door. To get to him, they need to break the glass door of the balcony. Before Conan could finish his sentence, Hyoe Kuroda smashed the glass door with a flower pot from the balcony. He ordered Conan and Heiji to wait on the balcony while he and Kogoro entered the room. As they stepped inside, Kogoro tried to avoid stepping on the shards of glass, staggering and knocking over some lollipops from the desk. Momiji Ooka, who was now climbing onto the balcony, saw the scene and noticed something. The large number of lollipops didn't surprise Heiji, as the stage director had been sucking on one the whole time during the meeting. Meanwhile, Kuroda examined Kabumoto but could only confirm his death. The victim's mouth smelled of almonds, and the area around his mouth and neck was wet, indicative of cyanide poisoning. A water bottle and a vial lay beside the body, indicating that poison had likely been mixed into the water, which the victim had subsequently consumed.

Some time later, the Kyoto Police arrived at the crime scene, led by Inspector Fumimaro Ayanokoji. Together with everyone present, he reviewed the events leading up to the discovery of the body and was prepared to classify Kabumoto's death as a poison suicide, given its similarity to the suicide of actress Ninka Gyouda, who was known to the victim and his colleagues and whose body had been found by them. However, Heiji and Conan disagreed: it was murder. No spoon had been found in the room to mix the cyanide into the water bottle. If the poison had been poured directly from the vial into the bottle, some would have inevitably spilled onto the lid, but no traces of poison were found there. Additionally, the water bottle would need to be shaken after the poison was added, yet the inside of the lid was completely dry. Kuroda concluded that the poison had been added beforehand and that the water bottle and vial had been placed in the room afterward, thus implicating the three members of the theater production had killed him: scriptwriter Reisuke Inaba, stage manager Shigeki Kimata, and producer Myoji Karuo.

The three suspects had checked on the victim fifteen minutes after he had gone to sleep. One of them could have placed the water bottle, Heiji stated. The suspects denied this, claiming they only wanted to confirm that the victim was truly sleeping. Kimata had even covered him up again since his towel had fallen off. Inaba had not entered the room but stood in the doorway, noticing nothing suspicious. None of the suspects claimed to have seen a water bottle or a vial of poison. Kuroda, Conan, Kogoro, Heiji, and Momiji were ruled out as suspects since they had all stayed together in the living room, “chilling,” as Heiji put it. Momiji seized on this, clinging to Heiji’s arm and confirming that she had been chilling with him. In the process, she pressed Heiji’s arm against her chest, saying she could chill with him forever. Heiji, somewhat distracted by her breasts, did not object.

Meanwhile, Kazuha and Ran were still working their way through their dessert tour, with Kazuha suddenly shuddering. She had a feeling that Heiji was being seduced by the dark side and dragged into a world of depravity by Momiji. She asked Momiji's butler, Muga Iori, if he would really take them to the director's house after they finished visiting all the shops. Iori had no objection but reminded her that they still had eight more shops to visit, where tables had already been reserved for Ran and Kazuha. Kazuha cursed her greed from earlier in the tour and continued eating.

At the crime scene, the investigators speculated on how the perpetrator could have slipped Kabumoto a sleeping pill to induce the nap. The director had not eaten from any of the pizzas, and it was impossible to predict who would take which cup from the coffee tray. That left only the lollipops, but the suspects claimed that was impossible. The victim only ate a specific flavor and would have immediately noticed if his lollipop contained sleeping pills. Conan asked why Kabumoto insisted on cutting the pizzas himself. According to the suspects, he had developed this habit during his medically prescribed diet, wanting to contribute at least a little to the consumption of the pizzas. Kuroda now questioned whether the victim had really eaten nothing from the pizzas, as he had noticed the smell of garlic and cheese in addition to the almond scent of the poison during the examination of the body. Kogoro interjected that the pizzas cut by Kabumoto were intact, with none having been bitten.

Meanwhile, Ran and Kazuha arrived at the next shop. The tour guide was astonished at how the two could eat so much, while Iori scanned the surroundings as he got out, which did not go unnoticed by the guide, as Iori always behaved this way upon exiting. When asked, Iori claimed it was just a habit of his that should not be paid any mind. At the crime scene, the investigators were puzzled over the motive. The suspects could at least imagine a motive for suicide: Ninka's suicide. Kabumoto had hired her for every one of his plays and had been present when her body was found. The parallels between the two incidents were undeniable, Karuo said, but Ninka's apartment was on the 30th floor of a high-rise in Osaka. When Ninka did not show up for the dialogue rehearsal, Kabumoto received an email from her saying, "I’m dying". They all rushed to her apartment, where the door was open, but the bedroom door could only be opened a crack. Instead of using a ladder like with Kabumoto, the group accessed her bedroom through the neighbor's balcony.

After the suicide, Kabumoto had been very depressed and wanted to cancel the current play about Heiji and Kogoro, but then, out of nowhere, he suddenly became enthusiastic again. He stared at one of his lollipops and exclaimed, "Ah, now I see clearly! This play will definitely be a hit!" Heiji did not understand why he was staring at his lollipop, which prompted Momiji to mention the moment when Kogoro knocked the lollipops off the desk. Momiji had noticed that one of the lollipops bounced much higher than the others when it hit the ground, making a faint popping sound. "These lollipops are really unusual these days", Momiji remarked. Through her words, Conan and Heiji had a moment of clarity and solved the case. The crime scene had not been sealed off from the start but had been locked by the perpetrator right in front of their eyes.

Trivia

  • The dishes Kazuha and Ran eat at Odaifukuya are ohagi.
  • Ayanokoji is shown to have hidden his pet chipmunk in his breast pocket. This means that in previous cases where he appeared, the chipmunk might have appeared as well, but was just hidden. He also nicknames it "Maro-chan", from his own first name, but it is unknown if it is the chipmunk's official name.
