Plot
In Beika, Conan explains how Shiori was able to make Torakage carry the message: he takes out an A4 sheet from his backpack and starts folding it in half horizontally. After that, he folds the other sides and makes it into a rocket-shaped paper airplane. He later creates some creases in the corners and folds them again, thus transforming the rocket into a "bird". As Genta explains that it is just a regular paper airplane, Conan throws it in the air and it starts flapping its "wings", just like a bird, prompting Torakage to chase after it. This was how young Shiori was able to get Torakage to take her letter, but the cat ended up not delivering it to her grandmother. Thus, considering the travel distance of the paper airplane, Shiori is most likely held captive inside her own house. The new housekeeper locked her up and would make sure she would not make any noise and thus easily be able to maintain communication with her accomplice. The Detective Boys then ask where she is held inside the house. Conan explains that her letter likely did not mean "Shiory, hurry help" (シオリはやくたすけて Shiori, hayaku tasukete ) from the torn part "Shiori hur... help" (シオリはやたすけて Shiori ha ya tasukete ), but based on the fact she was able to throw the paper bird, "Shiori is in the attic, help" (シオリはやねうらたすけて Shiori wa yaneura tasukete ). Having finally found where she is kept, Mitsuhiko decides they should call the police detectives in front of the Ishigami residence to rescue her, but Conan says it is better to yet for Sato's confirmation that the kidnapper she was chasing has been neutralized, as if the kidnappers found out the police were after them, they might barricade themselves inside the attic and hold her hostage.
As Conan's call gets through, Sato is still in front of the Red Brick Warehouse. After explaining to her where Shiori is, Conan asks her to be on standby as there might be other accomplices, but she says it is unlikely, as the kidnapper left his phone in the jacket he dropped, and no one called or texted the phone yet. Conan and the Detective Boys thus decide they will take care of the housekeeper on their side and asks Sato to take down the motorcycle guy, but Sato is unsure who as they still have suspects. To help her, Conan lets her know the other kidnapper is probably a medical professional, as he used technical terms when he visited the Ishigamis before to fill them in on her sister's sickness (the housekeeper). He also had notes on his hands, which is a habit that doctors have. To help them corner the culprit, Conan tells Sato, Chihaya and Takagi he has a strategy with a 30% chance of success. After that, Jugo, who is sitting further away from Chihaya and Takagi and who is eating his pancake, is accosted by Chihaya, who says she needs backup.
Meanwhile, at the Ishigami residence, Inspector Hatori's assistants show him the dice which the Detective Boys gave him, and the frantic housekeeper arrives and takes it, but when she realizes what the dice's message meant, she falls on the ground. Conan had secretly written "give up" on the dice using the pigpen cipher they were using to secretly communicate. At the same time, another detective arrives from the attic holding the just rescued Shiori, at the Detective Boys' instruction. Following a successful rescue, Conan informs Sato that they can start their plan to take down the remaining kidnapper. At the Red Brick Warehouse, Chihaya opens her phone and it starts playing Beethoven's Für Elise, which neither the burly suspect nor the suspect with glasses react to. However, the blonde man is shocked and looks around, and is cornered by Chihaya, who tells him that 24% of Japanese hospitals use that piece as a nurse call ringtone, and since he reacted, he must be a medical professional. She smiles at him, saying a nurse should not be kidnapping children. The man figures out that he has been found out and whips out a knife, but is met by Takagi, Sato, Jugo, Chihaya and Jugo's coworker, and is thus forced to surrender. As he is being loaded in Sato's Mazda RX-7, Sato asks her how she knew it was him even without using that ringtone trick, and she said she figured he was a lefty since he drank his tea with his left hand and had a watch on his right hand, and Conan told her that the culprit had notes written on their right hand, and only a lefty would be able to write on their right hand. As Sato and Takagi drive away, Sato pinches her boyfriend because he got close to Chihaya, while a jealous Jugo probes Chihaya about what she did with Takagi (the water-splashing scene from the previous chapter).
As the Detective Boys walk home, they talk about the case they just solved, and Haibara notices that Mitsuhiko still has the Kamen Yaiba pin on his scarf. Genta comments angrily that he is just showing off, but Mitsuhiko said the instructions on the box said to show it proudly on your clothes. Conan just realizes something odd and asks him if it was indeed a 24th anniversary pin, which Mitsuhiko confirms, and finding it abnormal that they would not be waiting for their 25th anniversary to release it, he takes Mitsuhiko's and touches it, and he realizes it is way too heavy for a normal pin. As he opens the pin, he realizes it contained a listening device and he quickly destroys it, as the others watch panickedly. Listening on the other side is Rei Furuya, who drives away in his white Mazda RX-7, saying that this is a "tough nut to crack".
