==Hints that Scar Akai is a Black Organization imposter and not the real Akai==
It is unclear at this point if Scar Akai is the real Shuichi Akai or an imposter. So far, the commentary in the manga sidebars assumes Scar Akai is the real Shuichi Akai; however, the commentary has been purposefully misleading in past arcs. FBI agent Jodie Starling thinks he is the real Akai who managed to escape from death somehow, but has amnesia and cannot speak. Agent Camel is confused and wonders if Scar Akai is a trap from the Black Organization. Although Conan has yet to come into direct contact with Scar Akai, Conan seemed thunderstruck after hearing about his existence and worriedly chased after him. Although Scar Akai is revealed to be Vermouth in chapter 822, it is unclear whether or not she has been Scar Akai all the time.

Current Events

Subaru Okiya

Subaru Okiya.jpg

One popular theory is that Subaru Okiya is Shuichi Akai. Okiya first appeared not long after Akai's apparent death. Okiya and Akai have many similarities, such as appearance and left handedness. Conan trusts him and ignores Haibara's reactions to him. Conan also seemed to know about the place where Okiya lived before they met. Ran also feels like she recognizes Okiya from somewhere. The name "Okiya Subaru" continues the pattern of puns on "Char Aznable" that "Akai Shuuichi" and his alias "Moroboshi Dai" follow.

"Scar Akai"

Scar Akai.jpg

Some time after Akai was apparently killed by Kir, during a stroll through Tokyo, Jodie encountered a man who looks exactly like Akai, but with a huge burn scar on the right side of his face. At first, Jodie was reluctant to believe that this man was Akai, and she didn't tell anyone about her discovery, rather attempting to figure it out on her own. Later, she admitted her prior encounter to Andre Camel after he saw scar Akai in a bathroom. In the Detective Boys vs. Robber Group case, the man helped Conan defeat the robbery gang, though Conan himself didn't learn about his presence or involvement then.[1] Scar Akai also appeared at a department store where he was trapped on a floor with Subaru Okiya and then was targeted by the Black Organization's snipers.

Masumi Sera

Masumi Sera.jpg

The character Masumi Sera is Akai's younger sister, as confirmed at the end of Chapter 821.[2] Sera's eyes are identical to Akai's. Also, Sera Masumi's name is also incredibly similar to Mobile Suit Gundam character Sayla Mass (セイラ・マス, Seira Masu). Akai's name is derived from Sayla Mass's older brother's name, Char Anzable. Also, Conan, Jodie, and Camel have the feeling she resembles someone they know.

Hints that Okiya was Akai

  • Okiya and Akai have similar appearance and habits. Elaborate here later.
  • Okiya and Akai are both left handed.[3]
  • Conan, who knew Okiya was Akai and was therefore an ally, uncharacteristically broke with his normal untrusting tendencies by allowing Okiya to be close to Haibara despite multiple warnings from her. Not only did Conan continue to brush off her warnings, he came up with excuses as to why he trusted Okiya. One such excuse, "A Holmes fan can't be a bad person!" was an obvious lie as there was an entire murder case where all the suspects were Holmes fans[4] and the Black Organization has used Sherlock references before.[5]
  • In the "Red, White and Yellow" case,[6] Conan recognized the address Okiya was staying at despite never having met Okiya before.
  • Okiya was often shown drinking bourbon, which Camel had earlier stated was Akai's favorite alcoholic drink.[7]
  • Ran felt like she has seen Okiya from somewhere.[8] Ran has met Akai three times that she can remember: once in New York City,[9] in a restaurant,[10] and another time after the "Dark Footprint" arc.[11] Akai had frightened and deliberately intimidated her in their first meeting[9], so she felt uncomfortable and decided she shouldn't talk about Shinichi with Okiya.
  • Haibara began suspecting Okiya to be Dai Moroboshi. During a car chase, Okiya said the line "Don't make that kind of face"[12] which caused Haibara to remember that Dai Moroboshi said something similar to that in the past.[13] Okiya triggering Haibara's Black Organization sense also fit with this as Dai had been in the Black Organization.
  • Okiya and Akai sometimes use similar expressions. Okiya at one point admonishes Haibara "not to make that kind of face."[12] Akai has used that line twice before, once to Conan in Clash of Red and Black[14] and once as Moroboshi Dai in Haibara's past.[13] Both Akai and Okiya refer to the Black Organization members as wolves.[15][16]
  • When Okiya runs into Jodie at the department store and knocks her down, he tells her, "The division of fault is 50/50. You also bear some of the blame for neglecting to pay attention to your surroundings." As this occurred during Jodie's chase for Scar Akai whom she thought was the real Akai, one can surmise that Okiya's intention may have been to hint that he was Akai she was looking for.
  • Aboard the mystery train ride, Yukiko and Okiya retrieved unconscious Masumi Sera. When Okiya and Sera were alone, the unconscious Sera whispered 'Shuu-nii' (-nii being the Japanese honorific for older brother) and Okiya had smiled at this, implying that he is her brother, Shuichi Akai.
  • "Subaru Okiya", "Dai Moroboshi", and "Shuichi Akai" are all references to Mobile Suit Gundam character Char Aznable. The “Akai” (meaning red) part of Akai’s name refers to Mobile Suit Gundam character Char Aznable’s nickname “Red comet.” “Shuichi” is a reference to the voice actor of Char Aznable, Ikeda Shuichi (who incidentally became Akai’s voice actor too). Dai Moroboshi, the alias Akai used while he was undercover in the Black Organization, comes from part of Char's real name, Casval Rem Deikun, with "Dei" pronounced as "Dai" (ダイ) in Japanese. In Moroboshi (諸星), the first kanji can be broken up into 言者 which when pronounced as げんしゃ (gensho) sounds very similar to the word for "phenomenon" (genshou). The second character (星) means "star". Moroboshi, read as "Star phenomenon" references falling stars or maybe comets. “Subaru Okiya” is a pun on Char Aznable’s real name which is キャスバル “Kyasubaru” (romanized as 'Casval').[17]

Hints that Okiya was not Bourbon or another character

  • Okiya knew about Conan's tracking glasses and the detective badges.[18] Conan has never used the tracking glasses in front of Okiya before. Bourbon or a third party would not be privy to Conan's gadgets. The mechanism to operate Conan's glasses isn't obvious, so only someone who knows about their existence beforehand could recognize the glasses at Agasa's and figure out how to activate the tracking function. Shuichi Akai could have heard about the glasses in several ways. The first source is when James Black was kidnapped while he had Ayumi's detective badge. Conan used the badge to track down James Black. James was waiting to meet with Akai before he was kidnapped and drove away with Akai after he was rescued. Akai could have also heard about the tracking function from Jodie when Conan chased after Kir to prevent an assassination. Finally, Akai may also know about them from when Haibara borrowed the glasses to find Conan at the shipping yards at the climax of the Vermouth arc. He was present at the time and would have seen Haibara wearing them even though she has never worn glasses when Akai had seen her previously.

Hints that Scar Akai is a Black Organization imposter and not the real Akai

Scar Akai is a disguise used by Vermouth and Bourbon to impersonate the real Shuichi Akai.

Known facts about Scar Akai

Scar Akai after firing a gun at the bank robber holding Conan hostage. He uses his right hand.
  • Scar Akai seems to be right handed given how he shot the handgun. Shuichi Akai is known to be left-handed.
  • Scar Akai somehow knows Kogoro Mouri's cell phone number.
  • So far, all of Scar Akai's appearances have been in Beika city very close to one another. Teito Bank and the Beika department store are almost adjacent. Mouri Detective Agency is also in Beika City.
  • Scar Akai is good at deduction. His red shirts case solution wasn't as complete as Okiya's and Conan's deductions, but he may not have had access to the internet and therefore info on the snowy mountains case with his "borrowed" phone.
  • He is cautious enough to use a handkerchief to avoid leaving fingerprints while handing back the random man's cell phone which Scar Akai used to text Kogoro.
  • Scar Akai is most likely male.

When Scar Akai handed back a cell phone to its owner, he spoke to that man. If he can't imitate voice in the first place, he must use his real voice which would alert the owner if he has a woman voice but an appearance of man. However, this alone can't rule out the possibilities of him being female because there was a situation in which Ran and Sonoko mistook Sera's gender from her appearance, even though they spoke with her for several minutes. However theories about Scar Akai being Masumi Sera took a new turn when both of them were seen separately in chapter 802.

Shuichi Akai

Scar Akai looks like Shuichi Akai. He seems to recognize the FBI and the Black Organization agents. He also rescued Conan from the bank robber.

Bourbon

Scar Akai could be Bourbon who, with Vermouth's help, has disguised as Akai and is appearing before the FBI agents in order to gauge whether the real Akai is alive or not based on their reactions. Bourbon, who hates Akai and refuses to believe that anyone else could kill him, believes Akai's death was faked with help of Kir and the FBI.

Arguments for Scar Akai being Bourbon note his inconsistent behavior; so far, Scar Akai has only been appeared in front of FBI agents rather than around Tokyo generally. Scar Akai seems to recognize the FBI agents which suggests he doesn't have amnesia, but he puts Kir in danger by wandering around in the open. If he recognized the FBI enough to leave Jodie a message, it is strange that he would not speak to the FBI agents since Scar Akai is capable of speaking. Also, Scar Akai is right handed based on how he fired a handgun, not left handed like Akai.

The FBI agents Scar Akai has appeared in front of so far, Jodie and Camel, were known to be close to Akai and thus would be considered likely compatriots if Akai needed help faking his death. Given the circumstances of Akai's death, Bourbon must also suspect Kir is a spy and was in on the plan. In light of this, it makes sense that Scar Akai would know Kogoro's cellphone number; Kogoro texted Kir after the Ding Dong Dash case, and Bourbon got Kogoro's number from Kir's cellphone which was left in Gin's Porsche when the FBI mistakenly intercepted her.

Gin lowering his gun from Kir's head shows that he doesn't think Scar Akai is the real Akai. Since Gin called Kir in the "Thirteen Red Shirts" case, he has held a gun to her head the entire time. After Gin observes Scar Akai, he gives the order for Chianti to leave, and he removes the gun from Kir's head. He wouldn't have done so if he thought she was a traitor.

During the Bell Tree arc, when Scar Akai passes Haibara, she has a Black Organization vibe reaction to him.

While on the train, Scar Akai throws away a briefcase. Yukiko Kudo sees what he did, and told him he should stop doing this nonsense. Scar Akai finally revealed himself and his true identity was Vermouth.
