Makoto Kyogoku the Understudy (代役・京極真 Daiyaku Kyōgoku Makoto ) is the 993rd, 994th, and 995th episode of the Detective Conan anime.

Situation
Part 1
Conan, Ran, Sonoko, Sera and Makoto are walking on the streets after watching a movie, when they find a man taking a woman hostage. Fortunatelly, Makoto knocks down the criminal to later see Shigematsu Tomioka telling that all of the scene was a performance and why he interrupted the shooting of the scene. Since the actor was unconscious, Makoto is choosen as the understudy of the film. They later find two actors, a production assistand and a makeup artist. The actor Saiya Tokuzono is so annoying because he made a joke giving an electric pen to the actress Nanako Jinmei to sign an autograph. When Makoto and Tokuzono go to an abandoned building, the staff prepares to film some scenes. When the director asks for Tokuzono, the actor screams and falls from a window, and Makoto is the main suspect because he was in the same floor when the murder took place.

The police investigate the scene and adds also the staff as suspects, the assistant director find something in the room of the murder. At the end of this part, the assistant director Daisaku Odori seems to solve the murder and starts to blackmail the culprit.
Part 2
Conan discover some clues but he didn't discover the culprit yet. He later knows something of the deceased production assistant called Nishibe, who was also Hideka's boyfriend. When all the staff were drinking some drinks that were buyed by Yota and Takagi, the assistant director Daisaku Odori fells poisoned onto the floor.

Conan now has two cases to solve. When Conan was motivated to solve the case. Later, Sera after doing a tricky question to Conan, almost knows the true identity of him, Shinichi Kudo.
Part 3
Haibara tells Agasa that thirty years ago, her father worked in a R&D company and were forced to create the APTX-4869. Finally, after investigate too much, Conan solve the case using Sonoko's voice.

Manga to anime changes
- Hideka Aburai's hair in the manga is black, but is changed to brown in the anime.
- Daisaku Odori's hair in the manga is black, but is changed to grey in the anime.
- A flashback from The Desperate Revival is added in the anime, when Ran talked about the time when both Shinichi and Conan were together.
Trivia
- The police car from The High School Girl Trio's Secret Café reappeared.
- The restaurant fanchised Welcome Burger, named after McDonalds', which appeared in Clash of Red and Black, reappears in this case.
- The movie in the beginning shows the Azengers, a group of heroes that are actually inspired by Marvel Comics' Avengers. The movie shows Kamen Yaiba joining the group.
- The film production staff's van is a white Toyota HiAce. The license plate number is 新宿 330, ふ 59-65 (Shinjuku 330, Fu 59-65).
- The car that rammed Jinmei in the past is a white hardtop Mercedes CLK320. The license plate number is 新宿 320, ま 23-06 (Shinjuku 320, Ma 23-06).
- Daisaku Odori wears Nike sneakers.
- The ambulance that carried Odori's corpse is a Toyota HiMedic. The license plate number is 新宿 800, ひ 47-62 (Shinjuku 800, Hi 47-62).
