Shukichi and Yumi met for the first time while she was still in college, on a train where he overslept and rested his head on Yumi's shoulder, waiting for the stop. But Yumi waited and missed her stop just to wake Shukichi up for his own as shown in chapter 900. After this encounter, they met again and began dating ever since. But in the end they broke up because he was immature and gave her a letter containing a marriage registration, telling Yumi not to open it until he won all seven shogi titles. Stressed because she couldn't open the letter until he won them, Yumi decided to break up with him.

After some time, they met again in Chateau Beika Condo, where Shukichi currently lives. Their relationship began to improve when Shukichi rescued Yumi from a kidnapper thanks to the Detective Boys's help, and when Yumi kissed Shukichi as a good luck charm for the "Meijin" match. But Yumi was unaware of Shukichi being a famous shogi player for a long time until she saw Shukichi on television and figured it out. After realizing that meijins can make 100,000,000 yen in salary, she desperately tries to reclaim an envelope he left for her. Eventually, Yumi manages to find the envelope, however, Shukichi lost the Osho match, making the envelope that contains the marriage registration nullified. Yumi rips the letter, but encourages Shukichi to keep following his original plan and to never lose to anyone, calling him "Bald headed Rat", making the latter blush.

Volume 49: Files 505-507 / Episode 427-428: Super Secret of the Road to School

• Yumi tells the Detective Boys that she had a boyfriend while in college. She admits that he was very handsome, but at the same time very childish, which was why she chose to dump him in the end. She has been trying to avoid him ever since.

Volume 80: File 847-849 / Episode 731-732: The Ex-Boyfriend Living Next to a Crime Scene

• It is revealed through Yumi's dream that a some time ago, Yumi was going on a date with someone; during the date, that person gave her an envelope, and instructed her to open it only after he obtained "seven of them".
• Since she still does not know what "seven of them" refers to and that person has not contacted her since, she has not taken great care of the envelope and now does not know where it is.
• Yumi does not know what that person does for a living, and speculates that he is from a wealthy family, and depends on his parents' money to sustain himself.
• While patrolling with Yumi, Naeko receives a call from her friend Sakurako, who tells her that she has found a dead body in the household where she works as the maid. They rush to the scene, and Yumi discovers that the neighbor next door is Shukichi Haneda, Yumi's ex-boyfriend.
• Shukichi is overjoyed at seeing Yumi again, and believes that they are still in a relationship. Yumi, on the other hand, thinks that it is a very awkward encounter and keeps insisting on calling him her ex-boyfriend.
• The Detective Boys figure out that Shukichi is actually a shogi player close to claiming all seven titles that exist.
• Shukichi reveals to us readers that the reason why he has not contacted Yumi since handing her the envelope is that Yumi once mentioned that she wanted to be the woman of the king. Although this comment was made in a very casual manner, it made Shukichi determined to win all seven titles of shogi before further developing his relationship with Yumi.
• Naeko tells Yumi about how Shukichi is a "Meijin" (名人, which is one of the seven titles of shogi and also means "famous person"); Yumi does not realize that she is talking about shogi and thinks that Shukichi's fame must be among fishing enthusiasts or something like that (note that Naeko is actually wrong about Shukichi, as he has not obtained the Meijin title yet).

Volume 85: Files 899-902 / Episode 785-786: Taiko Meijin's Match of Love

• Yumi is kidnapped when Shukichi heads to his shogi match for the title of Meijin at a hotel in Yamanashi prefecture. Shukichi leaves in the middle of his match and takes a car ride to Tokyo in order to save Yumi.
• After rescuing Yumi, Shukichi heads back to finish the match, but suddenly he notices that Yumi's photo which he carries everywhere as his "good luck charm" is missing. Yumi gives Shukichi a kiss as the replacement good luck charm, and says that "this is more effective than a photo". He returns to Yamanashi in time to win his 7th shogi title.

Volume 88: Files 928-930 / Episode 828: Ramen So Good, It's to Die For 2

• Yumi tells Naeko that, despite the kiss that led to Shukichi's win in the Meijin's match, they still have not gotten back together, as whenever she tries to arrange a date, Shukichi would tell her that he is busy.
• Since Shukichi might have useful information related to a case, Yumi calls him. As Shukichi apologizes for not having time for a date, he receives another call, which he hangs up after saying "I am on a call with an important person right now, just call me later". Yumi asks whether another woman has called him, an allegation that Shukichi dismisses without being annoyed.

Volume 89: Files 945-947 / Episode 849-850: The Marriage Registration's Password

• Thanks to Sato, Yumi finally realizes that Shukichi is a famous and highly successful shogi player. After realizing that he might make 100 million yen a year, she desperately tries to reclaim an envelope he left for her, as Sato believes that it contains the marriage registration form.
• It turns out that she threw it away, and that it was subsequently seized by her ornery building manager, who is a fan of Shukichi. He knows what the envelope contains, and wants to test whether Yumi is really a good life-long companion for Shukichi.
• With Conan's help, Yumi successfully passes the test. However, Shukichi just lost the Osho match, nullifying the marriage registration (where Shukichi states that his job is "a shogi player with all seven titles". Yumi rips the letter up, but encourages Shukichi to keep following his original plan and to never lose to anyone, calling him "bald headed Rat", making the latter blush.

Volume 96: Files 1015-1017 / Episode 972-974: The Target is the Metropolitan Police Traffic Department

• While searching for clues in a photo to aid the investigation of the murder of fellow Traffic Department police officers, Yumi gets a call from an unknown number which turns out to be Shukichi. He has been frantically and repeatedly calling every 10 minutes to express his concern for her safety, as he had learned from the news that the killer is seemingly only targeting policewomen from her Department.
• Yumi asks whose phone Shukichi is using, to which Shukichi answer that it belongs to his senior, and that he is at the shogi hall for an interview. Yumi urges him to go home quickly, and he tells her to do the same; in their later exchanges, it is revealed that Yumi spent the night before at his place playing mahjong.
• Despite Yumi's promise, Shukichi remains worried about her safety, so he later sends a text message to his older brother, Akai, asking him to protect Yumi. Akai accepts to do so, and after interacting (indirectly) with Yumi, he remarks that she is not the type of girl that needs protection.

Volume 98: Files 1043-1046 / Episode 1033-1035: Taiko Meijin's Shogi Board

• Yumi, thinking that Shukichi has been behaving in a strange way lately, decides to tail him. She initially thought that Shukichi had been behaving so because they had started living together and he had not fully accustomed to that, but after Ai's suggestion that he could be secretly meeting another women, Yumi changes her mind and starts suspecting that as well.
• Later, Yumi finds out that Shukichi has been doing nothing more outrageous than holding Shogi practice sessions with other Shogi players.
• Yumi mentions to Conan that she has never met the family members of Shukichi (although she does know that he has a younger sister, an elder brother, and that his mother is still alive), and she erroneously assumes that their personalities will be similar to that of Shukichi. Conan, of course, knows that she is wrong, but he keeps quiet and does not reveal any relevant information.

Trivia

• They are one of the few non-childhood couples along with Miwako Sato and Wataru Takagi, having met when Yumi was still in college.
• In the LOVE PLUS Super Digest Book it was revealed that Shukichi was the first to confess his feelings to Yumi.
• Chukichi’s first love is Yumi.
