Yamatoya started writing scripts for anime ever since 1997. He studied under his father Atsushi Yamatoya's apprentice Yoshio Urasawa, he is extremely active in writing anime scripts, he was one of the main organizers of the anime series Gintama. Later in 2005, he started writing scripts for tokusatsus such as Mahō Sentai Magiranger, he even wrote lyrics for some songs within that tokusatsu.
He joined Detective Conan by writing comedy stories first, which is similar to his teacher Urasawa's style.
