Tequila (テキーラ Tekīra ) is a Black Organization member who was killed by a bombing by accident. He works in the external division on computer software related development related tasks, presumably by recruiting, dealing with, and making exchanges with programmers.[1]
Contents
Background
Tequila was heard speaking in a Kansai dialect (Boston or New York accent in the Funimation dub) by Conan. He is described by Conan as being very tall. Nothing much is known about him as he dies a few pages after he is introduced into the manga. Two years ago before Conan's encounter with Gin and Vodka, Tequila was negotiating with a famous computer system programmer Suguru Itakura and asked him if he could develop some software program that would be useful for the syndicate. Itakura described him in diary as someone who he won't want to meet ever again in his life. Ryusuke Soma, a game company executive described him as a suspicious large tall man with a big mustache. On the day of his death, he had a deal with a Mantendo game developer, Hideaki Nakajima. The deal was that Nakajima sold the organization a list of the world's top computer developers. The exchange happened that after both Tequila and Nakajima had check in their briefcases at a convention, they switch numbers and keys and afterwards claim their 'new' briefcases. However prior to the switch, a third party named Hironobu Takeshita, who had a grudge against Nakajima, put a bomb in his own briefcase and swapped keys and number secretly behind Nakajima's back to kill him with the bomb, so Tequila ended up the bomb instead and went to toilet to check the briefcase's contents and died.
Personality
Being large in size, he usually intimidates people, which helps with his transactions. When he had his fateful encounter with Conan, he bumped into Conan and Hideaki Nakajima, knocking them to the floor. He didn't even apologize, and continued on his way. Also, when Conan pretended he dropped a 10 yen coin that had fallen beneath Tequila's shoe and really tried to stick a transmitter and bug on the sole of his shoe, Conan was hit hard by Tequila for annoying him. This shows Tequila has an impatient personality and isn't afraid to hit young children.
Plot overview
Game Convention Case (Manga: 114-116, Anime: 54)
This is Tequila's introduction, and he's the first codenamed Black Organization agent featured in the show since Gin and Vodka in the 1st episode. Tequila had some dealings with the video game company Mantendo, and had requested a list of the top computer programmers in the world. The briefcase he has gets mixed up, and he is mistakenly killed when the briefcase he opens detonates a bomb, which was meant for someone else. Tequila speaks with Vodka over the phone in this episode, and argues a bit with him. Conan, upon realizing Tequila's codename and overhearing the conversation with Vodka, attempts to place the microphone from his glasses as well as the wireless transmitter with his Criminal Tracking Glasses to find Tequila's meeting place with Gin and Vodka.
On the trail of the Silent Witness (Manga: 377-378, Anime: 307-308)
Meeting with Vodka (Manga: 380, Anime: 309)
Non-Canon Plot Overview
Movie 26
- Tequila (after a 20 year absence) is mentioned during the cold opening for this film while Conan reflects on the fact that the male codename agents of the Black Organization are named after types of hard liquor, and female members usually have codenames consistent with types of wine.
Relationships analysis
Gin
Although Tequila is a subordinate of Gin's, he doesn't use honorifics like Vodka does[3] to refer to Gin, giving the impression Tequila and Gin appear equally ranked.[4]
Vodka
Tequila and Vodka are approximately equally ranked and both are Gin's subordinates.[4]

Trivia
- He is one of the only codename agents, along with Gin, Vodka, and Sherry, to appear in the Funimation English dub.
- He is the first Black Organization member to be killed in the anime.
- He is also the first person to be killed by mistake in the series, as the briefcase bomb that killed him was actually meant for someone else entirely unrelated to him or the organization.
- Despite him being one of the earliest Black Organization agents to appear in the series, after his debut in Episode 54, he wouldn't appear again until "On the Trail of the Silent Witness" case, which directly tied into the "Contact with the Black Organization" case, which aired years after Tequila's introduction, in 2003. He has one of, if not the longest gap between appearances of any Detective Conan character, as following the "Contact with the Black Organization" case, Tequila wouldn't be mentioned or appear again for 20 years until 2023 in movie 26, "The Black Iron Submarine."
