Kogoro and Conan are on their way home when they witness a struggle between two men over a backpack. Later, one of the men fell off the building and died.

The culprit is Hideki Sugimoto. However, the accident turned out to be a murder made to look like an accident. He pretended to struggle with him, so that he could push the victim towards a tarp (he cut the ropes holding it in place) and stabbed him repeatedly with his ballpoint pen to loosen his grip. The marks on the victim's hand indicate this and is what is used to convict the murderer.

Motive

Sugimoto's motive is revenge for His girlfriend who died in a car accident with a drunk Furuta speeding over the limit. Because there were no witnesses, Furuta got away claiming that she suddenly jumped in his way in the dark road and so he was spared any punishment.
