Akemi Miyano (宮野 明美 Miyano Akemi ), also known by her alias as Masami Hirota (広田 雅美 Hirota Masami ), is a character in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. Akemi is the older sister of Shiho Miyano, and both were members of the Black Organization. However, unlike her sister, Akemi was never considered a high ranking member of the Organization.
After completing a bank heist that was supposed to free her and her sister from the Organization, Gin and Vodka betrayed and killed her before Conan can save her. Akemi is one of the few characters in the show that knows Conan is Shinichi Kudo, as he admits it to her while she is dying in front of him, telling him about how dangerous the Organization is.
Although she dies in her first appearance, Akemi shows up numerous times throughout the series, mostly in episodes featuring Haibara, whom looks at Ran Mouri as a spitting image of her sister. It is also later learned that Akemi was the girlfriend of Shuichi Akai, back when he was undercover in the Organization, and wanted to begin a real relationship with him after she would have left.

Background
Akemi was shot by Gin and died. Akemi was never considered a high ranking member of the Organization, as her sister was considered more important, due to her being the one that created the poison the shrunk Shinichi. After many years in it, she decides she wants to leave, along with her sister. Both wanted to start a new life, and Akemi was in love with undercover FBI agent Shuichi Akai, who she knew as her boyfriend Dai Moroboshi.
Akemi made a deal with Gin to pull a bank heist in exchange for her and Shiho's freedom. She hired two men to help her out, taxi driver Kenzo Hirota for his getaway car, and a large man for his strength. The night before the heist, Akemi sent Dai-kun (Akai) a text message, asking him to be her real boyfriend if she is able to escape from the organization.[1]
Plot overview
Manga version
However, after successfully completing the heist, Hirota betrayed them and took the loot for himself. In order to find Hirota and the money, Akemi disguised herself as a school girl and visited Kogoro's office, claiming to be Hirota's daughter Masami searching for her runaway father. After they found him, Akemi contacted the giant, whom had hired his own detective, and a fight broke out between the two men, resulting in the giant strangling Hirota. Akemi and the giant hung Hirota's corpse from a rope to make it appear like a suicide, grabbed the cash, and left for a hotel. Akemi slipped some pills given to her by Gin into the giants drink, unaware that they were poisonous and would kill him instantly. With both of her partners dead, she hides the suitcases of money at the hotel's front desk and heads of to meet Gin and Vodka, with Conan following closely behind.[2]
When she arrives at the meeting place, she tells Gin she will only tell him where the money is after he frees her sister, but Gin goes back on his word, saying her sister is far too valuable to let go of. He gives her one last chance to cooperate, but she refuses and he shoots her. Conan arrives at the scene too late, and she dies while he tries to save her.[3] It is here that Conan reveals to her, while she is dying, that he is Shinichi Kudo.[3] Akemi's death is ruled a suicide, as Gin's fingerprints were not found on the gun that killed her.[3]
Anime version
In the anime, she works at a bank under the name Masami Hirota and pulls an inside job, without any partners,[3] while the Kenzo Hirota part of the story was used for another case unrelated to Akemi or the Black Organization.[4]
Personality
Akemi was a friendly, cheerful and outgoing personality. While she could kill without remorse if she had to, she retained enough compassion to despise her life of crime and try to find a better life for herself and her sister.
Relationship Analysis
- Akemi Miyano and Shuichi Akai
Shuichi Akai originally met Akemi by accident. She accidentally hit him with her car when he was walking in the street. Akemi was concerned over this, and helped take him to the hospital, watching over him until he was better. When he woke up, he felt no anger over what she did, and even asked for her name, to which a very flustered Akemi told him her name, while he told her his fake name: Dai Moroboshi. After this, both of them discovered they were in the Black Organization, and began dating. However, for Akai, there was a catch involved. To the FBI, Akai's relationship was merely a stepping stone, something to use to take advantage of the Black Organization, and to get information. However, as James Black later recalls, Akai had begun to fall in love with Akemi, and consider her his real girlfriend.
In Akemi's heart, she always felt that Akai (Dai,) really wasn't who he seemed to be. Later, due to a massive error by Andre Camel, Akai is discovered to be an FBI agent, leading to his exile from the Organization. When Akemi discovers this, she runs to him in tears, sad and angry, and afraid that Akai really had only used her to get information on the Organization. When Akai asks her why she never said anything about her suspicions before, Akemi basically hints it is because she loves him. After this, Akemi and Akai don't hear from each other for a long while, and Akemi's role in the Organization dwindles because they believe that she gave information about the Organization to Akai. After the successful bank heist, she is killed by the Organization. However, on the day of the heist, Akemi sent Akai a long text message, tell him that after the heist, when she is finally free from the Organization, if he wants to be her real boyfriend. Akai is never able to answer this, as she is killed by Gin. Akai treasures this text message, and it was even still in his phone, many months after Akemi's death.
- Akemi Miyano and Ai Haibara
Despite the fact that they couldn't see each other often, Akemi and her sister Shiho were very close to each other. Akemi had constantly tried to encourage the studious and workaholic Shiho to relax and find herself a boyfriend.
Akemi's death scarred her sister deeply. Much of Akemi's personality Shiho finds personified in Ran Mouri - perhaps this is the main reason why Shiho was first reluctant to accept her (due to the still-fresh pain of her loss), but eventually came to consider her as a surrogate sister.
Trivia
- Akemi's voice actress, Sakiko Tamagawa, is in real-life married to Akai's voice actor, Shuichi Ikeda.
