Anime Original (AO)/ Anime Exclusive

Anime original content is anything that comes from content written by someone other than Gosho Aoyama as opposed to manga based episodes which are adapted from files written by Gosho Aoyama. The abbreviation AO is often used to refer to an episode whose screenplay is written by an outside author.

Baijiu (Chinese: 白酒; pinyin: báijiǔ), or shaojiu () is a Chinese distilled alcoholic beverage. See main article.

Canon

Canon is used to describe information that is considered "official" by a fictional universe's fan-base. Canon matrial from Detective Conan is only the information, storylines, settings, and characters found in the manga and information given by Gosho Aoyama in interviews. See main article.

DL

Deputy Lieutenant.

Dub

Dubbing is the process of re-recording and/or replacing voices of a video. This is most often done to air the show in another language. At a minimum, the original voice actors are replaced with native language actors, but sometimes the soundtrack, dialogue, and even whole scenes are replaced depending on what the licensing company sees fit to change. This can create disparity from the source work; the English language Funimation Entertainment dub, Case Closed, changed many of the character names.

Golden Week

Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク Gōruden Wīku?), also known as Ōgata renkyū (大型連休 ?) or Ōgon shūkan (黄金週間 ?), is a Japanese term applied to the period containing a number of almost successive public holidays. See main article.

Honorific

A word or expression with connotations conveying esteem or respect when used in addressing or referring to a person. In Japanese, honorifics are mandatory and pervasive, and signify the relationship between people using them. It is sometimes difficult to find an appropriate English equivalent that sounds natural, so they are sometimes left untranslated. For a list of honorifics and what they imply please see Wikipedia.

Kanji

Kanji (漢字 ?) are the Chinese characters that are used in the modern Japanese writing system along with hiragana (ひらがな, 平仮名), katakana (カタカナ, 片仮名), Indo Arabic numerals, and the occasional use of the Latin alphabet (known as the Romanization of Japanese, or "Rōmaji").

Remaster

An older episode which has had the quality of its sound and/or picture enhanced. Sometimes various scenes are added, removed, or changed. When used in the Detective Conan fandom, it often implies that the weekly timeslot for Detective Conan is rerunning a remastered episode instead of showing new content.

Romanization

A method of taking the Japanese written language and approximating it using the Latin alphabet so it is more readable to English speakers. There are many different styles of romanization. The output of romanization is called "Rōmaji".

Seiyū

Seiyū (声優 ?) is Japanese for "voice actor".

Sub

Sub is a shorthand for subtitled episode as opposed to a dubbed episode. The original voice acting, dialogue, and soundtrack are preserved, while a translation is displayed over part of the screen.

Shōnen

Shōnen (少年 少年?), shonen, or shounen, is a Kanji word literally meaning few years and generally referring to a typical boy, from elementary school through high school age. Shōnen manga is a popular genre of Japanese comics, generally about action/fighting but often contains a sense of humor and strong growing friendship-bonds between the characters.

Tankōbon (or Tankoubon)

Tankōbon (単行本 ?), with a literal meaning close to "independently appearing book", is the Japanese term for a book that is complete in itself and is not part of a series, though the manga industry uses it for volumes which may be in a series.

Original Video Animation (OVA)

An anime production, usually shorter than a full movie, which is produced exclusively for direct video/dvd release. It is sometimes written as Original Animated Video (OAV).

Yen

The yen ( en?) (sign: ¥; code: JPY) is the currency of Japan.
