Crime is one of the central elements in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan by Gosho Aoyama. Crime appears in many forms throughout the whole series, with the most common one being the act of Murder. Almost every case in Detective Conan involves one or multiple kinds of crimes, however, the extent and dangerous degree of which vary from case to case. The protagonists, along with the Law Enforcement and many other detectives, are responsible for preventing and fighting against these crimes.
A person who commits crime is usually called a "Criminal" (犯人 han'nin ).

Murder
General
Murder, and sometimes referred to (although not entirely correctly) as Killing, is one of the many forms of Homicide, where a person ends the living life of another person on purpose, for some certain reasons. The criminal in this case is usually called "The murderer", "The killer" or "The culprit". This is the most common crime in Detective Conan.
There are many ways to commit a murder, but the most common methods that have been used throughout the whole series are: Use sharp objects (such as knife) to cut or stab the victim's body; physically attack the victim with heavy objects (usually on the head); shoot the victim using firearms; strangle or poison the victim to death...
The murders in Detective Conan are prompted by various motives, such as vengeance, jealousy or hatred... The relationship between the culprit and the victim each time also ranges from enemies to close friends[1] and even siblings[2]. In most of the cases, the murderers usually come up with brilliant tricks and strategies that would help them creating a solid alibi, or making the crime scene looks like an accident or a suicide; in order to prevent the truth from being revealed to other people.
Most murder cases are assigned to the Homicide squad (殺人犯捜査第1~第12係) from Division 1 (捜査第一課) of the Criminal Investigation Department (刑事部)[3].
Attempted murder
There have been many situations, in which a killer was having intention in finishing the life of a certain target, but didn't succeed in doing so, due to the survival of the victim afterwards. This kind of situation happens when the victim is rescued on time by a third person before the culprit can do any harm, or that the victim is able to defend or dodge him/herself from the most lethal attacks.
Sometimes, even though the murders have successfully wounded their targets to the point of being unconscious, however, these victims are fortunately aided on time, thus end up alive.
Serial murder
A Serial murder is a series of Murders that occurred in a period of time and are all carried out by the same murderer(s). This kind of crime happens occasionally in Detective Conan.
Cases with serial murder:
Assassination
Assassination is a special form of Murder. In the case of assassinations, the targets are usually prominent figures, mainly politicians (rather than normal civilians), who are supposed to be murdered in a surprise attack[4].
Assassinations and assassination attempts rarely occur in Detective Conan, and most of the times are carried out by the Black Organization. Cases with assassination or assassination attempt:
Kidnapping
Kidnapping, and sometimes referred to as Abduction, is the taking away or transportation of a person against that person's will, usually to hold the person in false imprisonment, a confinement without legal authority. The criminal is usually called "The kidnapper" or "The abductor". This kind of crime occurs occasionally in Detective Conan.
The act of kidnapping is usually committed for ransom; other common purposes include to blackmail the hostage or other people into following the kidnapper's command (such as helping him/her doing some tasks), or to acquire certain information by intimidating the hostage or the hostage's acquaintances... In general situations, kidnappers often forbid the intimidated targets (usually the hostage's acquaintances) to seek help from outsiders or the authorities, unless the blackmailed targets are the authorities themselves[5]. If these people failed to obey those demands and let the kidnapper finds out, the life of the hostage would be in danger. Most of the times, once the kidnapper is surrounded by the Police or other rescuers, he/she will use the hostage as a shield to threaten and overwhelm them, in order to easily escape from the scene. It takes cautiousness and brilliant strategies to defeat such criminal and save the victim alive at the same time.
Just like with murder, the targets for the kidnappings also vary from time to time. While many cases feature young children as hostages, there have been times when adults[6] or young adults[7] were illegally abducted as well, depending on the kidnappers' motives and intentions. The status and role of the victims also range dramatically from the most ordinary civilian to a Police officer[5], from the most minor case character to the lead protagonist[8].
General kidnapping cases are most likely assigned to Division 1 (捜査第一課) of the Criminal Investigation Department (刑事部)[9].
