Part 1
Conan's class finds a wallet containing a message from Ran, who left it ten years ago. Conan shares the story of how it got there by explaining adventure he had in the past. Ten years ago, Shinichi and Ran enter the school at night to investigate the rumors of a ghost. They run into a mysterious man who claims to be Shinichi's younger brother and who challenges them in a treasure hunt; He then hands them a wallet with a letter containing the message "Quell the anger of Haido" in kanji. "Quell the anger" is pronounced the same as "Drop the anchor", the riddle refers to Haido Port. The pair finds another riddle hidden on a fire hydrant which contains the message "Clear the allegations against Toriya and demolish the liver of Goroukou" in kanji. Conan reveals that clearing the allegation is to prove innocent meaning to prove White (白 ,Shiro?) which refers to the word Castle (城 ,Shiro?) meaning Toriya castle. Goroukou is a reference to Mito Kōmon (水戸黄門 ?). Destroying the liver means destroying the middle, so removing the middle kanji of Mito Kōmon yields Suimon (水門 ?, lit. Flood Gates). The pair finds the next clue near a railroad track by floodgates of Toriya Castle: the message on the riddle is "Erase this Mark. With a raspy voice, endure loneliness."
Part 2
Shinichi solves the riddle and heads to the school and finds the next riddle on a stop sign. The letter contains a mixture of kanji, and mahjong symbols and when read, pronounces Beika City Hall. Once there, Shinichi finds a sign on a pole with the message "S → W". Shinichi presumes it means the sunset and assumes his father created the riddle for his entertainment, with the cooperation from the mysterious man. Shinichi and Ran waited for the mysterious man to show up but never met him again.
Back in present time, Kobayashi and the Detective Boys remarked that the last clue was really disappointing and seemed redundant: it was just a simple "S → W" message, and to point to the sunset it sufficed to use "W" alone. Conan suddenly realized his deduction years ago was wrong.

Back in the present time, Conan realizes what the riddle actually means. Conan writes down the symbols for port, castle, flood gate, post office, middle school, and city hall. It is revealed that even if "S → W" could mean South to West, when the symbols are turned 90 degrees, they mean 'ox hide' in english letters. Conan rips open the leather wallet which reveals a message for Yusaku Kudo from the original Phantom Thief Kid, a single question mark. In the past, Yukiko Kudo has dinner with Toichi Kuroba and hands him a letter from Yusaku. It contains a single exclamation mark, revealing that Yusaku received Toichi's message and implying that he knows Kid's true identity.
Trivia
- Although Ran has had backflashes of Shinichi events in The Locked Room in the Sky: Shinichi Kudo's First Case and in Shinichi Kudo's New York Case, this is the first time that Conan recalls an adventure that he had as Shinichi Kudo.
- This is the first Shinichi Kudo backflash case from when he was really a little boy, and in this case, he and Ran are both 7 years old. The three previous backflash cases all happened last year. This is the first time that he was in Elementary school in a backflash.
- This case revealed that when Ran, Sonoko, and Shinichi were in first grade they were in Class 1-A.
- In The Seven Mysteries of Teitan Elementary School Case, it revealed that Conan was the only Detective Boy that removed his street shoes, when sneaking into the school at night, and this case showed that when Shinichi did the exact same thing ten years ago, he immediately removed his street shoes as well.
- Even ten years ago, Professor Agasa drove a yellow beetle, and had the license plate of 1-64, so his car must be in very good condition since it is at least ten years old, and has the exact same license plate as now.
- This is one of the first cases, where Yusaku states in a backflash, that lately Shinichi has been staying inside reading books all of the time.
- This backflash case appeared to be the start of Eri's budding career as a Lawyer, since she mentioned that her first trial is coming up.
- In this case, Megure stated that when he was a child, he and his friends used to make codes, and pretend to be spies.
- This case also revealed that Toichi Kuroba is also the one who taught Yukiko disguise technique.
- This is the first case that really shows the two different parenting styles of Kogoro and Eri together, and a contrasting style of Yusaku and Yukiko, and this backflash was probably before Yusaku began taking him to crime scenes with him.
The backflash ends with little Ran and Shinichi dropping the honorifics and surname, and begin calling each other by their given name only.
- This is the only case that Shinichi Kudo met Toichi Kuroba, or in short, "The Original Kaito Kid," who happens to be the father to the current and third Kaito Kid.
- This case also showed that Kaito had met Yukiko, and even got a scolding from her for calling her a "Pretty old lady."
- This case revealed that Yusaku Kudo came up with and named "Kid," which also explains why "the original" referred to himself as Shinichi's younger brother, and Shinichi as his older brother."
