Background
Kohji Haneda was the only son of a wealthy family. As a talented shogi player, he had once also fought against Chikara Katsumata. His adoptive younger brother, Shukichi Haneda, deeply respected him and likely changed one of his name characters slightly to honor him. A bishop shogi piece, that he always kept as a good luck charm, was the last piece he moved the first time when he won against his teacher. His motto was "I must carry my initial dream through to the end", the same written on a fan that Shukichi now owns. By the time of his death, he had won four shogi titles and many had high hopes that he would win all seven of the major ones.
Seventeen years ago, he went to the United States for a chess competition that also enjoyed. The night before, in his hotel room, he met wealthy Amanda Hughes, one of his big fans, and felt in love with her bodyguard, Rachel Asaka. At the meantime, he realized what happened to Amanda and protect her adoptive daughter from the Black Organization. After knocked her out with a stun gun, he handed Asaka his good luck charm, that it has a cut on its lower left, and hid her in his bookshelf. When they came in, in order to prevent from checking there, he told Rum to have seen a piece of news including him gave a speech for Renya Karasuma thirty years ago. After let one of his man beat him, Rum realized he would not reveal anything about Asaka, so decided to kill him with a drug developed by the organization. In his last breath, he cut the mirror given to him by his mother to leave his dying message: "CARASUMA".
Hyoue Kuroda wasn't able to save both Amanda and him. Rum tried to clear up the evidence, but they had to run because the police were on their way. Tsutomu Akai was a friend of his father, who asked him to investigate his son's death. Asaka keeps his good luck charm and, thought of him as a foolish person because he sacrificed himself to protect her, still seeks revenge for both Amanda and him.

Name origin
Maybe the name Kohji Haneda (羽田 浩司 Haneda Kōji ) comes from Yoshiharu Habu (羽生 善治 Habu Yoshiharu ) and Kōji Tanigawa (谷川 浩司 Tanigawa Kōji ), real-life shogi players.[8]
Shukichi Haneda (羽田 秀𠮷 Haneda Shūkichi ) may have changed his name slightly to honor the late Kohji Haneda. Kohji's given name is 浩司, and the first character's radicals are (氵ノ土口). 土 is earth's do. Shukichi's given name is spelled 秀𠮷, with the final "kichi" kanji also including the radical for earth's do. This 𠮷 for kichi is a very rare variant; 99% of the time kichi is written as 吉 with 士 (man/samurai's shi) instead.
