Case

Situation

Part 1

Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are at a café when they run into Chiba and Takagi, who are on their way to a singles party;Takagi being forced to go. Meanwhile, he finds Sato and Yumi there too. After a tense moment between the two, they attend the party. After a brief conversation, Conan realizes from the conversation that a boy is home alone and in danger. When they arrive at their house, the boy has been kidnapped.

Kidnapping

The kidnapper leaves an email demanding money. They sent out investigating the 3 people who didn't go to the party, for Kouta said that he heard his uncle's voice via phone. They deduce that it's a friend. The visit the houses of the suspects, with Takagi and Sato undercover. The episode ends with a cliffhanger.

Resolution

After solving clues Takagi leaves suddenly and Conan reveals who the kidnapper is. Just then, Kouta returns home unharmed, making them believe the culprit (Takuji Rokuda) will try to make a run for it. After arriving to Rokuda's house it is revealed that a winning lottery ticket was returned to the culprit in his mailbox, making him realise his friends had no intention of stealing money from him. The guilt Rokuda feels upon this realisation is so crushing that he decides it's best for him to kill himself.

Takagi arrives when Rokuda has already slashed his wrists and placed his arms in his full bath tub, and manages to stop him. When Sato and Conan arrive, they see Takagi sitting on the ground and covered in both water and blood; they believe he's been injured, but Megure arrives and proudly tells them what he did, adding that Rokuda will live and likely will receive a light sentence since he didn't harm Kouta. Sato is still angry and sad at Takagi, and yells at him for the danger he could have been in.

In the end, when Takagi and Sato are talking about their rekindled relationship, they almost kiss. Bad thing, they're in the car; Mouri interrupts because he, Ran and Conan are in the backseat, and since Takagi is driving they could crash in their way to the police station.

• Kazunobu Chiba and Masashi Emoto have been friends since middle school.
