Plot
At the Naniwa Arts Theather, Conan, Ran, Kogoro, Heiji and Kazuha are assisting to the premiere of the romance play about Kogoro and Heiji. In the play's finale, Heiichi Hattori (based off Heiji) prepares to leave to hone his detective skills overseas, but Kaede, his lover, wants him to stay. Heiichi reveals that he was only able to solve the case with the sleeping Daigoro (based off Kogoro)'s help and that is why he needed to leave. The curtain then lowers on Heiichi leaving and Kaede longing for him. Next to a visibly bored Heiji, Kogoro gets up from his seat as the play ends and applauds loudly, garnering laughs from the other audience members. As Kogoro says that the play was amazing, Heiji and Conan stare at him, clearly not thinking the same. Ran asks Kazuha if she enjoyed it, which she says yes to, but that the "Ochiba" character was very annoying, as she was getting in the way of Heiichi and Kaede. Ran thinks to herself that "Ochiba" is probably modeled after Kazuha (since the play was sponsored by Momiji). Conan and Heiji tell each other that the play should have been cancelled after the scriptwriter killed the director, but that it only ended up getting it more attention and the replacement director and scriptwriter were paid a big amount to finish it quickly. They also note that the script changed a lot while glancing at Kogoro, implying that it was now more foccused on the famous detective. Kazuha, who is wearing a face mask, coughs a bit, and Heiji asks her if she is alright. She says that she is and that she will just go get some medicine and she should be better afterwards. The group decide to meet the actors in the dressing room, while Kazuha says she will go get her medicine. Ran offers to come with her, but Kazuha politely refuses, saying that Ran looked forward to meeting Koumoto-kun so she should go, and that she had prepared a surprise for Ran.
At the dressing room, Kogoro hands a bouquet to Koumoto and Kenzaki and praises Kenzaki's performance, which was faithful to his real person, and Kenzaki said he was motivated to play Kogoro's character as the great detective previously helped him. Kogoro also praises Koumoto's performance, saying that he was a great supporting character, which Koumoto lukewarmly welcomes, as he is in fact a protagonist as well. Ran then scolds Kogoro for saying that about Koumoto and then congratulates Kenzaki for now being engaged with fellow actress Yuki Takeno. When Ran asks how did Kenzaki propose, Kenzaki says that it was the other way around, Takeno proposed to him on the observation deck of Naniwa Harukas on a glowing sunset evening and said that she was so beautiful no man could refuse. Koumoto adds that after the proposal went viral, and that now Naniwa Harukas was a famous spot for love proposals. Conan looks at Heiji, asking him if he will try confessing his love for Kazuha there, but seeing how he is lost in his thoughts, figures out that he is indeed thinking that. Kogoro then asks why Momiji, who was the model for the character of Kaede, not there, to which Koumoto and Kenzaki reply that she wanted to come but had a karuta match. Kazuha then arrives, still wearing her mask, and tells Ran she is now feeling fine. Heiji glances at her, and thinks to himself that as an Osakan, he must propose at the top of Osaka, and he then gets nervous, so he happily ruffles through Conan's hair, who thinks that his confession will probably end in a disaster again. Meanwhile, Kazuha asks Ran if she noticed anything, which she says she noticed Heiji is now interested in Naniwa Harukas, but Kazuha half-removes her mask, telling her not that. A perplexed Ran stares at Kazuha, but suddenly, they are interrupted by the loud voice of Toshikata Yoshiura, who reveals himself as the actor for Daigoro Mouri. When Kogoro asks him why, Koumoto and Kenzaki explain that since they are very busy in the showbiz world, they have stand-ins, so that only one of them needs to be on stage per performance. They only appeared together for the opening performance. Then, two more actors introduce themselves, Youka Kuraishi, who plays Kaede, and Miku Narasawa, who plays Ochiba. Narasawa then goes to Kazuha, asking her how her performance was, since she played the one modeled after her, and Kazuha reluctantly says it was good. Then comes in Ayari Kakiwaki, the actress for Rieko Mouri, who laughs at how Narasawa's performance showed her frustration for not getting the role of Kaede. As Narasawa retorts, Nobuya Nagakubo, who plays Suruga Iori asks both of them to calm down, but Kakiwaki snarkily remarks that he himself wanted to have the role for Daigoro. Nagakubo shyly says that it is now in the past. Yoshiura then butts in, asking what Nagakubo meant, before Kuraishi tries to ask everyone to get along. Tenma Anzaka then arrives, saying that he just wants to get over with his final performance, as this play is cursed.
Heiji asks him what he meant, and Anzaka replies that director Kabumoto was killed by scriptwriter Inaba, and that later, the replacement scriptwriter collapsed with a fever after finishing the play, and that the replacement director got into a car accident also after finishing it. He then stares at the other actors, telling them they should be careful, as anything can happen now. Kogoro interrupts him, saying that he is being pessimistic and that good things also happend, like how Kenzaki got engaged. Anzaka continues despite that, saying that Kabumoto liked to have all actors under his control and that he was nicknamed "devil's puppeteer". Before leaving the room, he tells everyone that they are playing in Kabumoto's curse. Kuraishi tries to run after Anzaka, but Narasawa shoves her and asks him to wait, but Anzaka just tells her not to follow him. Meanwhile, Kakiwaki says that they wanted to turn the play into a movie, and that even though they will recast Kenzaki and Koumoto as the leads, that Kakiwaki and the rest still had a chance to get a role. Kakiwaki then says that it would probably liven up the mood if one more person died, while grinning. Kogoro and Heiji's group then leave, feeling like they have seen the dark side of the industry, and Heiji noted how Kabumoto did not seem like a devilish person at first glance. Ran then asks Kazuha again what her surprise was, but a loud yell can then be heard.
Bystanders say that someone just fell. Conan and Heiji rush to the crime scene and stumble Narasawa, died from having impacted with the ground. Meanwhile, Kuraishi, Yoshiura and Nagakubo, who just arrived at the scene, are wondering how this happened. Kogoro also arrives, and notes how the body has a bizarre pose, like that of a marionnette. Suddenly, a cellphone falls from above. On it is written "I Am Devil's Puppeteer".
