General

Before everything else

  • Please do read this article carefully before you make the first edit, even if you feel very passionate about changing something and cannot wait. It will ensure that your (valued) contributions fit the established style of the wiki and allow others to navigate this site and read articles with maximum comfort and minimum confusion.
  • Before submitting an edit, please use the "show preview" bottom on the side to ensure that your code is achieving the effect that you wanted it to achieve. Please also check whether there are spelling and punctuation errors, grammatical mistakes, repetition, conflicting information etc. whenever you can. Again, this improves user experience and additionally it avoids unnecessary clean-ups.

Articles in general

Some important rules:

  • Try to include categories (i.e. using [[Category:Name of category]]) whilst creating a new article (use other similar articles as example to know which categories to put). If, when previewing, the category name appears in red or if you're unsure, please do not try creating new categories unless you know what you're doing. A moderator or experienced contributor will take care of them.
  • Try to always include a See also section if possible (and/or applicable). It's good practice for user-friendliness purposes (as it provides a useful and extra mean of navigation).
  • The References section should always be placed after the See also section but before the External links section.
  • If there's an External links section, it should always be placed at the end completely (i.e. last section on the page).

Capitalization

For section headers:

  • Only the first letter should be capitalized (unless there appears a person's name).
  • Though quite rare, in some contexts, some common words may be capitalized (possibly following a discussion/talk about it).

In category names:

  • The first letter of the first word should be capitalized.
  • Common words should not be capitalized. Examples: "Kudo family", "List of something", etc...
  • Some words that refer to people should be capitalized such as "Voice Actors", "Executive Producers", etc...

Naming convention

Even though Japanese names are usually given with the last name placed first, people's names in this wiki should follow the format: Given_name Last_name.

The rationale can be read here.

References

If citing manga chapters or anime episodes (or movie, OVA, etc.), please point to the corresponding wiki page of that chapter or episode. The format is as follows:

  • For manga chapters:
  • For manga chapters not yet in a Volume, there must not be links to the chapters (this will ensure we easily catch this citation later on when they become part of a Volume):
    • File X: Title
    • Example: File 763: The Ghost of Time
  • For episodes:

If using a "name" variable for the references, please use the following:

  • For manga files:
    • <ref name="fXpY"> (the pY is optional). "f" and "p" stand for "File" and "page" respectively. Example: <ref name="f433">, <ref name="f100p8">.
  • For anime episodes:
    • <ref name="eX">. "e" stands for "Episode". Example: <ref name="e501">.

Spoiler Policy

Spoilers are any information that reveals major parts of a plot, mystery, or storyline event. Spoilers can refer both to information about unreleased or untranslated story events and to dramatic turn of events or resolutions. "Manga spoilers" are specifically any information that would spoil a person up to date with the manga (such as leaked pictures from an upcoming chapter), and "anime spoilers" will spoil someone up to date with the anime (such as information about manga chapters that haven't yet been released as episodes).

In this wiki, individual anime episode pages and manga volume are spoiler-free given that the reader/watcher is up to date with the episode/volume in question. Most other articles on the wiki, especially character articles, are kept up to date with the manga and will contain significant manga and anime spoilers. Pages where wiki readers that aren't caught up in the manga have a high risk of spoiling themselves may have a spoiler warning template or even a click-through with a prominent warning to keep them from reading material that they may regret.

Current Detective Conan Wiki Spoiler Policy
Article Type Example Safety
Individual anime episode, movie, OVA, and Magic File pages Episode 1 Safe for people who have watched up to that point. Case solutions and resolutions are hidden in spoiler boxes. Links to other articles such as character articles may lead to spoilers.
Individual volume pages Volume 1 Safe for people who have read up to that point. Case solutions and resolutions are hidden in spoiler boxes. Links to other articles such as character articles may lead to spoilers.
Character Pages Shinichi Kudo, Characters Can contain manga spoilers. Character articles can prominently display spoilers such as secret identities and allegiances that will spoil anyone not caught up with the manga.
General information lists Anime, Manga Contain very general spoilers in the form of icons that signify the sorts of plots that appear in each chapter or episode. (eg. Character Pasts, Black Organization)
Everywhere else Black Organization, Setting, FBI, APTX 4869 Can contain manga spoilers.

Resolutions to cases or arcs are hidden in spoiler boxes on volume and anime pages. Other pages may discuss these resolution spoilers openly as described above. Other measures taken to protect resolutions include making sure that the crime boxes and suspect descriptions are appropriately naive; they use the police/Watson perspective as opposed to the hyper-intelligent Conan/Sherlock perspective. This sometimes means using aliases instead of real names prior to a character's identity revelation, labeling murders as suicides or vice versa depending on what the police think, or not including certain people as suspects because they have a strong alibi and/or the police rule them out. The point is to avoid ruining the mystery for readers by not giving out additional hints on top of what the case gives out on its own.

Headings

  • Do not use = Heading 1 =. instead, use == Heading 2 ==.
  • An == Introduction == section should not be used.

Characters

New character articles

Here are the characteristics, by order of importance, to look at when considering the creation of a page dedicated to a character:

  1. The character is a main protagonist.
  2. The character is a major recurring character.
  3. The character is a minor recurring character (2 appearances or more).
  4. The character is part of a main organization such as the Police, the Black Organization, a school body, etc.
  5. The character has had an impact on the storyline such that said impact spans more than one episode (or movie, etc.).

Profiles

The following is a global overview of the generic article structure when creating character pages. Blue statements emphasize important points.

Order Section Optional? Description Notes
1 Background The background section should contain a concise and precise overview of:
  • The character's past and younger days.
  • How the character was introduced in the series (more details can be given later in the Plot overview section).
  • The role of the character and how important they are in the series, their ties to their family/close friends, their impact on the storyline, and more.
  • Events or incidents that changed the character in a substantial, major or radical way (more details can be given later in the Plot overview section).
  • Personal history, activities, achievements and the like, known or associated to the character.
  • The goal of this section is to present the character to a "supposed first-time reader" so that they can easily place the character into the context and storyline of the series and understand the character's role and importance.
  • Subsections of substantial importance may be created.
2 Personality For canon and/or main characters:
  • Description of the general "feeling" emanated by the character from our point of view as well as the other characters'.
  • Qualities and flaws of the characters may be presented in details.
  • Any relevant information that pertains to the character's personality (or the influence it's had on others or the environment).

For non-canon and/or minor (recurring or important enough to mention) characters:

  • This section should describe at the very least the impression the character made from the viewer's point of view while or after being introduced.
  • Any other relevant detail is welcome.
3 ... Other character specific sections ... Yes Any other section(s) that pertain(s) directly to the character such as "Appellations", "Special abilities", "Skills", etc...
4 Plot overview Yes Present in a chronological order (broken down in subsections) the series of events in which the character was involved (directly or indirectly). Feel free to be as detailed as possible. If the plot overview is too big, you may fork it out to a new page and add a link to the new article.
5 Non-Canon Plot overview Yes Present in a chronological order (broken down in subsections) the series of events in which the character was involved (directly or indirectly). Feel free to be as detailed as possible. If the non-canon plot overview is too big, you may fork it out to a new page and add a link to the new article.
6 Relationships analysis Yes List (using subheaders - avoid bullets unless necessary please) other characters with whom the given character (may) have or have had some direct or indirect (but worth mentioning) relationship.
  • Forking is also allowed if the subsection is too big.
  • Relationship analysis should always come after the Background, Personality, Plot overview or any other section that directly pertain to the character in question. It is essential to first present the character, then their relationships with others (i.e. from specific to generic).
7 ... Other relevant but non-character-specific sections ... Yes Any other section(s) that pertain(s) indirectly to the character such as "People who know the character's real identity", etc...
8 Name origin Yes Describe in details the origin of the character's (Japanese) name.
9 Quotes Yes Provide a list of known, famous or important quotes said by or attributable to the character.
10 Trivia Yes List of minor or trivial facts of interest.
11 In other languages Yes One or more tables giving names of the character in foreign languages (including Japanese). Please indicate the language (not the country) and make sure that alphabetical order is being followed (except when dealing with Japanese, which should always stay on the top). Also, please use parentheses whenever it is appropriate to do so and include romanization for languages that do not use the Latin script (e.g. Arabic).
12 Gallery Yes Character images that provide important information or context about a character that cannot easily be shown in other sections on a page. Images in character galleries need to each have a specific purpose, so that the gallery does not turn into a list of a bunch of images with the character in them. Examples of appropriate images would the character's appearance when they were older or younger, or looked significantly different than they do currently.
13 See also Point to the Characters page and any other page that may be relevant to the article.
14 References Yes (if citations used in the article) References to cited sources. Please follow the format given in References.

Episodes, Movies, OVAs and TV Specials

The following is a global overview of the generic article structure when creating character pages. Blue statements emphasize important points.

Unlike other types of pages where spoilers are displayed openly, on Episodes, Movies, OVAs, TV Specials, and Manga Volumes, spoilers are hidden for the benefit of readers who don't want to know the answer. Therefore, when making crime boxes or adding details to people sections, please use the "Watson" perspective of what is going on in a case (basically what the police think) instead of the "Sherlock" perspective. If culprit was explicitly shown (the case is a howdunnit rather than a whodunnit) it is okay to list the culprit, but don't spoil how the crime was committed. The general rule of thumb is to hide any information that is part of a big reveal at the end, like the fact that X is the murderer, or Y is a member of the Black Organization. All that information and spoilers goes in the resolution section inside of the spoiler box.

Order Section Optional? Description Notes
1 Characters introduced, Gadgets introduced or Characters and gadgets introduced Yes List new characters and/or gadgets introduced by using the {{NewChar}} and {{NewGadget}} templates.

Describe the new character or gadget in a few words within the corresponding templates.

2 Cast List the characters that appear in the coresponding video by using the {{Char Appearances}} template. Use the full names of the characters when known. Titles should only be used when one or both parts of the name are not known. For very long arcs with multiple cases where the cast changes significantly like Clash of Red and Black or The Crisis Beckoned by the Red Omen, consider using multiple cast lists for each major part.
3 Case (or Case: Title) This section is broken down into several parts as shown below. It is possible to have more than one case in the same episode (or movie, etc...). If so, having many Case sections (enumerated like "Case 1" or "Case: Title of 1st case") is possible.
3.1 Situation Add one or many crime boxes pertaining to the current case by using the {{InfoBox Crime}} template. See below for the image guidelines. We want to be as clear as possible here. So it is important we dedicated one box per specific crime or crime attempt so that more precise details can be given and the reader doesn't get lost or confused.
3.2 People List people related to or involved in the case using the {{People}} and {{BeginBox}} (for wrapping all of the people's thumbnails together to avoid a broken layout structure) templates.

Describe in a few words each of the character when using the {{People}} template. Label the victim(s) as well. Omit information about people only revealed as part of the resolution of cases to avoid spoilers. Don't list people who only appear as part of the resolution ; those people are listed in the spoilered section.

3.3 Resolution Describe in details the resolution of the case by exposing in 3 points (or more) the:
  • Evidence
  • Conclusion
  • Motive
Use the <spoiler> tags to hide the whole resolution section to give the reader the option to dig in further or not. List anyone who couldn't be listed in the people section above because it would be spoilers in this section.
3.4 ... Other relevant case-specific sections ... Yes Any other section(s) that pertain(s) to the case such as "Trivia", etc...
4 ... Other relevant sections ... Yes Any other section(s) that pertain(s) to the article such as "Differences from the manga", etc...
5 Trivia Yes List of minor or trivial facts of interest related to the whole article.
6 BGM listing Yes List of the songs played during the episode, named by the soundtrack they are from.
7 Gallery Yes Images from the episode. 5 images max are allowed on the main page gallery section before it should be forked off into a gallery page for the episode "pagename/gallery".
A soft maximum number of 25 images can be added to a page's gallery per 30-minute episode, 15 being a good average number. This is to avoid legal issues associated with uploading too much of a copyrighted work. Please do not include fansubs or watermarks from fansubs or illegal anime hosters whenever possible.
8 See also Point to the corresponding season page of the episode (e.g. Season 1) or full Movies, OVAs or TV Specials articles. Any other relevant page may be added as well.
9 In other languages A table summarising the titles of episodes, movies etc. in different languages and countries. Please indicate the language (not the country) and make sure that alphabetical order is being followed (except when dealing with Japanese, which should always stay on the top). Also, please use parentheses whenever it is appropriate to do so and include romanization for languages that do not use the Latin script (e.g. Arabic).
10 References Yes (if citations used in the article) References to cited sources. Please follow the format given in References.

Season pages

Season pages list episodes according to an approximation of the Japanese DVDs, referred to as "Parts".

i.e. Season 1 contains Episodes 1-28 because Part 1 of the Japanese DVDs does as well.

Manga volumes

Manga volumes operate somewhat similarly to episode pages so many of the same instructions apply. The main difference stem from the fact that cases may be spread over multiple pages if the beginning and ending belong to separate volumes. The sectioning works a bit like a multi-case episode: certain sections are to globally cover all the chapters in the volume at the top and bottom of the page. These include things such as the cast list, trivia, introduced people, introduced gadgets, cover in other countries, references, etc. The main body of the page is where the cases are listed.

Each case has its own section which is given a brief descriptive title such as "Scarlet Showdown" or "Museum Owner Murder Case". Each case is then subdivided by chapters (i.e. files) which are numbered and listed by their chapter name. Each case may have its own introduced people/gadgets and a case people section as needed. People sections in manga volumes use black and white images from the manga instead of using a colored anime version. Unlike episode pages, there is no separate resolution section for volume cases. Instead, spoiler boxes are put where they are needed because resolutions may be spread over multiple cases and even volumes.

Unlike other types of pages where spoilers are displayed openly, on Episodes, Movies, OVAs, TV Specials, and Manga Volumes, spoilers are hidden for the benefit of readers who do not want to know the answer. Therefore, when making crime boxes or adding details to people sections, please use the "Watson" perspective of what is going on in a case (basically, what the police think) instead of the "Sherlock" perspective. If culprit is explicitly shown (the case is a howdunnit rather than a whodunnit) it is fine to list the culprit, but don't spoil how the crime was committed. The general rule of thumb is to hide any information that is part of a big revelation at the end, like the fact that X is the murderer, or Y is a member of the Black Organization. All that information is spoilers, and need to be in the resolution section inside of the spoiler box.

Music pages

The following is a global overview of the generic article structure when creating music related pages.

Order Section Optional? Description Notes
1 Detective Conan opening (or ending) info The Detective Conan opening info section should contain the following sub headers and information:
  • Cast - List of characters that appear in the opening/ending and listed in the order in which they appear in the song.
  • Gadgets - List of gadgets that appear in the opening/ending and listed in the order in which they appear in the song.
  • Case references - If the opening/ending makes any references to stories found within the anime/manga, link to those specific stories (preferably anime episode) here.

  • Staff - List of the animation staff that worked on the animation for this particular opening/ending.
  • FUNimation version - If the opening/ending was changed somehow for the English release of the show, list that information here.
2 Song info The Song info section should contain the following sub headers and information:
  • Chart placement - List the song's Oricon chart rankings.
  • Lyrics - All lyrics placed on the page should use the lyrics template (see Mune ga DOKIDOKI for example) and have the lyrics placed in this order: Romaji, English, Kanji, and English dub (if available).

Use the full version of each lyric set when possible. If you did not transcribe or translate the lyrics yourself, please ensure that you credit the appropriate people or entity and provide references.

3 CD info The CD info section should contain the following sub headers and information if available:
  • CD track listing - List the tracks found on the CD. Create another sub header if a limited edition version is available (see Don't Wanna Lie for example).
  • Gallery - Scans/images of the front cover, back cover, and CD.
4 Trivia Yes List of minor or trivial facts of interest.
5 See also Point to the Music page and any other page that may be relevant to the article.
6 References Yes (if citations used throughout the article) References to cited sources. Please follow the format given in References.

Minor recurring character pages and notable case characters pages

Currently there are three pages about minor characters: List of minor recurring manga characters, List of minor recurring anime characters, and List of notable case characters.

A minor character is any character who recurs or has a key role in an important case which impacts the plot (e.g. Matsuda Jinpei), but is not important enough to warrant a spot on the main characters page. That means the minor character lists are not for main characters, main law enforcement, or mystery people related to the arc (e.g. Eisuke or Araide). Minor characters may have their own article, which should be linked in the relevant minor character page.

There is some wiggle room for who qualifies as a notable character, but one that has a major impact on the plot (e.g. Hikaru Yasumoto for being relevant to the Vermouth arc's solution), is a love interest (e.g. Fusae Campbell), or considered notable by fans (e.g. Natsuki Koshimizu and Junya Tokitsu for being the highschool detectives of the North and South) are all good candidates. Not every character who is spotlighted in an episode or chapter will count.

Recurring characters

The definition of "recurring" is a character who 1) has two or more major appearances and 2) those appearances are in two separate mostly unlinked cases.

A major appearance is one that is in person, an extended flashback, or some other notable form. Basically the appearance itself must be substantial or otherwise worthy of some note. A situation where a character appears just by name or in one panel while being mentioned doesn't count as a recurrence even though it may be listed on the appearances page. Natsue and Takeshi Hatamoto's letter in File 215: The Northbound Train qualified them for recurring because their interaction with the case was fairly substantial - their letter provided additional details about what happened to them after their initial case and prompted Kogoro and co. to travel on the train where the case took place.

Some cases that are separate, but not unlinked enough for a character to count as recurring are Ran Girl and Shinichi Boy, Chinatown Deja Vu in the Rain and Shinichi Kudo's New York Case, and Parade of Malice and Saint and The Trembling Police Headquarters: 12 Million Hostages. These continue smoothly into one another (even though the anime split the last pair apart with an AO). When in doubt, the manga version of the cases is what decides whether cases are linked or unlinked.

Entries are not duplicated between the lists. Although most recurring manga characters also recur in the anime when their manga-based episodes air, those characters are only included on the recurring manga characters list. If a character is qualified to be listed on multiple pages, they should be listed only on the top page they qualify for. The order of the pages top to bottom is:

List of minor recurring manga characters is the most exclusive page: only characters who reappear in at least two separate mostly unlinked cases in the main manga canon are allowed on the list. Only characters who recur in Gosho's main manga canon are allowed on this list, appearances in Detective Conan Special manga and other non-canon works do not count as "manga based".

  • Sometimes the animators change or add characters when adapting a manga case to the anime. Characters who only appear in the anime adaptation of a case, but not in the corresponding manga do not count as a manga appearance. For example, the named police officers that appeared in the anime version of the Be on Guard on a Sweet Date/Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 5 case were not named and drawn mostly generically in the manga version. These named officers from the anime thus don't count for a manga-based appearance because they didn't actually appear in the print manga. Those officers can qualify for anime recurrence though.
  • A character who appears just once in manga canon (and then does not reoccur), but has multiple appearances in the anime or movies goes on the recurring anime page, not the recurring manga page. That is because the character does not occur at least twice on the canon ink and paper.

List of minor recurring anime characters covers appearances in both the movies and the anime together. Characters that appear in multiple unlinked anime cases, or in multiple movies count for this list. A character that appears once in the anime and once in a movie also qualifies. Appearances outside of anime and movie canon (such as Detective Conan Special) don't count for the purposes of the this page.

Notable characters

List of notable case characters covers anyone else who doesn't fall in either of the other lists because they don't reoccur, or because they notably reoccur in some other Detective Conan media that isn't manga, anime, or movie.

Speculation

Detective Conan is a long and intricate manga with many long-running mysteries. Many fans and casual readers find speculation sections which address popular theories and hints useful. Knowing the popular theories also eases newcomers' transitions into the fandom.

Speculation sections are generally allowed on character pages and other relevant pages (e.g. APTX 4869, Black Organization). Users may also create speculation sections in their own userspace (User:Username/Subpage), provided they are not too resource intensive (e.g. image and other media heavy) or link to materials that could attract negative legal attention. (like links to fan scanlations or manga aggregate websites.)

Speculation sections in mainspace articles must follow certain guidelines to enforce quality and usefulness.

  • Any speculation section should be clearly labeled so it isn't confused with known fact. This is most often done by adding a section titled "speculation" where various theories are presented in the subsections below it. Subsections should outright state or strongly imply the argument being presented.
  • Speculation sections must be serious. No jokes.
  • Speculation sections should be both well supported with evidence and notable (popular) by the fandom. A less popular theory with strong evidence or a very popular theory with weak evidence may qualify. If a theory is only popular in one particular fan subgroup or language, then it may not be notable. Truly popular theories will reappear in many languages and websites.
  • Speculation sections must use sound logical arguments, quality evidence, and correctly interpret the source. Theories may be removed if they are based on specious logic, invalid assumptions, or misinterpretations of the source material.
  • Please cite evidence and quotations in references. This makes it easy to fact check and allows others to examine the evidence and draw their own conclusions.
  • The more speculation material there is on any one page, the higher the standards will be for all of it. This is to avoid cluttering a page with excess material by promoting the ejection of the weaker, more unlikely theories.
  • The Boss of the Black Organization is a special case because there are too many theories with none dominant. It would be a nightmare to manage all the major theories about the boss that fans have floated over the years. Unless there is a major new hint, please don't add speculation sections to character pages suggesting that they are the boss. The Boss's own page will also be kept free of identity theories. The speculation section on the boss's page will be reserved for hypotheses that are self evident from facts.
  • If you disagree with a speculation, you may add information to point out its flaws. Rebuttals are also held to the same high standards of evidence. If there looks to be a fight brewing between editors, work it out on the talk page. Speculation sections do not decide right and wrong, they are about presenting a suggestive argument which fairly addresses its merits and shortcomings. Only the strongest support and the clearest contradictions matter. If you are in an argument with someone over a theory section, don't set an arbitrary standard where the other editor must answer your 20+ concerns and prove each little assertion with citations in order to be good enough. That turns editing into a war of attrition, which isn't grounded in merit. Start with the core problems.
  • Long, well supported speculations may have their own dedicated mainspace page. They should be tagged with the theories category.
  • Notability and evidence quality do not apply for theories in your user subspace. You should also tag your personal theory subpages with the theories category, so other users can find them.
