Plot
Ran and Kazuha are in Kyoto, where they visit cafés and pastry shops to sample their sweet delicacies. A play about Heiji and Kogoro is set to be produced in Kyoto, and the sponsor of the play generously invited Ran and Kazuha to join and treated them to a dessert specialty tour with a guide and driver, so they will not be bored during the production's debriefing. Once back in the car, a disagreement arises between the two girls: Kazuha heard that Heiji's character would be the lead role, while Ran heard that Kogoro's character would take the lead.
Meanwhile, Heiji and Kogoro, along with Conan, are in a villa for the aforementioned meeting with the scriptwriting staff, where they learn that the play will feature two lead roles. Both are outraged, as they do not consider the other to be on their level. The producer, Myouji Karuo, reassures them that it will be counterproductive to try to prioritize one famous detective over the other. The scriptwriter, Reisuke Inaba, wanted Kogoro to be the sole lead, as he is more famous throughout Japan than Heiji and has solved more cases. This remark particularly delights Conan, the actual one behind Kogoro's fame, prompting him to remind Heiji of it.
Stage director Shigeki Kimata assures them that both characters will have enough screen time, and the set design will be spectacular. The casting is also top-notch: Osamu Kenzaki, known from his role in the series "Detective Samonji," will play Daigoro Mori, while Hyouga Koumoto from the idol group NANIWA Kids will portray Heiichi Hattori. Heiji thinks the character names sound like cheap copies, and Conan internally notes that they indeed are. Another issue that bothers Heiji about the script is that his character has a fiancée from Kyoto. Just then, Momiji Ooka arrives and explains that this fiancée is based on her. In the car, Ran and Kazuha also realize that the sponsor of the play is the Ooka Corporation.
At the villa, Momiji is joined by the director Kyousuke Kabumoto, who explains that Momiji's grandfather wished for her to be included in the story as a condition for sponsoring the play. Kabumoto also mentions that another honored guest will join the meeting, just as a towering man appears behind him. In the car, Kazuha suspects that Momiji has ulterior motives and asks the driver to cancel the dessert specialty tour and take them to the villa instead. However, the driver, who is Momiji's butler, Muga Iori, refuses. He states that Momiji insisted they first try all the famous desserts of Kyoto before going to the house. Kazuha argues that Iori should also want to hurry to Momiji since he currently cannot keep an eye on her. Iori replies that someone else at the meeting is even more reliable than him.
That someone turns out to be none other than superintendent Hyoue Kuroda from the Tokyo MPD, who is introduced as Kabumoto's second honored guest. Kuroda just happened to be in Kyoto and visited Momiji's grandfather, who asked him to participate in the debriefing to provide feedback on the script from an experienced police perspective. At that moment, there is a knock at the door; a delivery service brings pizza. While Kabumoto pays the delivery person, the others are asked to bring the three pizzas to the kitchen, but Kabumoto insists on cutting the pizza himself. Kogoro inquires about the pizzas, prompting Karuo, Kimata, and Inaba to explain that they had pizza at a previous meeting for another play, which turned out to be a hit. As a result, it has become a kind of superstition for Kabumoto to always have pizza at the first preliminary meeting.
Soon after, everyone is eating pizza together in the villa's living room, except for Kabumoto, who declines because he is on a diet. Momiji remarks that pizza tastes good, leading Heiji to ask if she is really eating pizza for the first time. Momiji blushes and responds that she has not experienced many firsts yet and would appreciate Heiji teaching her various things. The romantic implications of her request seem to escape Heiji, who readily agrees to help. After the pizza, the script discussion continues, during which Kuroda points out the fact that there is a police officer in the script accepting a bribe by taking a candy from an elderly lady he helped. He also criticizes the officer's language. However, before Kuroda can elaborate further, Kabumoto yawns loudly. He apologizes, explaining that he is taking a sleeping pill for his insomnia, which is beginning to take effect. He excuses himself for a nap but insists he should be woken up after half an hour. As soon as he leaves the room, Kuroda resumes his critique of the officer's language.
Half an hour later, Kuroda finishes his feedback from a police perspective and prepares to leave, as he has something else to attend to. Before he goes, he inquires about the recently deceased actress Ninka Gyouda, who was reportedly good friends with Kabumoto. He asks Kimata, Karuo, and Inaba if they know of any possible reasons for Ninka's suicide, but they are unaware of any. Kuroda is about to leave when Momiji suggests he should say goodbye to Kabumoto, as it is time to wake him up. The entire group heads to Kabumoto's room, but when Inaba knocks, there is no response. He tries to open the door, but it only opens a crack before something blocks it. Kimata fears that Kabumoto has fallen from the sofa and is now lying in front of the door, but Karuo insists that he was sleeping soundly when they last checked. Suddenly, Kimata notices a piece of Kabumoto's shirt peeking out from under the door. Heiji also tries to open the door, but it is indeed blocked. Karuo remarks that it is just like what happend to Ninka, who killed herself and was found in front of her room door, preventing anyone from opening it. Conan, Heiji, Kuroda, and Kogoro rush out of the house to climb up to Kabumoto’s balcony on the second floor with a ladder. Heiji reaches the top first and sees that Kabumoto is lifeless in front of the door.
