Case

Situation

While at a painting exhibit, Conan notices a man in rag examining a picture. The next day while playing baseball with his friends, he notices the man again. After being asked about his drawings of a home, the man realizes he has been drawing unconsciously, and holds his head in pain. In the hospital, he was revealed to have been affected by amnesia and the pain was his returning memories. The man leaves the hospital. The next day while playing baseball, Genta finds the man dead.

Conan finds out that the man is Tatsuo Hayase, an artist who's been missing for a year. His wife, Kimie, is the only one who can identify the body but she proclaims it's not him. Conan proves that the murdered man is Tatsuo by the fingerprints he left behind when he came home after regaining his memories. Conan reveals that the murderer is Kimie Hayase. In the past she tried killing her husband to inherit his life insurance money then successfully did so again to prevent him from threatening her and revealing all to the police.

Trivia

• Despite making a big show of how Takagi doesn't smoke in the movie Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure, he actually does so in this episode in order for the show to reveal how Kimie dislikes smokers. This could either be one of three things.

• A simple animation error.

• This is earlier on in the show, before Takagi was a well known character, and perhaps, the idea of making him a non-smoker didn't come up until well after this episode.

• Or, seeing as how fans love to speculate, it may not have been Takagi. Though this theory is highly unlikely, there is still the possibility of Vermouth disguising herself. This is before Conan actually confronts the organization again, so it is highly doubted. Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that Takagi did smoke, despite that in the future, it is shown that he isn't a smoker.
