Part 1
Kogoro is recommended by someone to a wealthy family for a routine assignment; the man wishes to find his first love. With the police roaming around the house, though, Conan begins to wonder if that's really all there is to it. His answer comes when suddenly, Heiji Hattori joins the group on behalf of his father Heizo, an old friend of the chairman.
Later they celebrate the chairman's birthday,; however, the eldest daughter Nobuko became very angry at Miyuki, the chairman's beautiful secretary and fiancée of the second son Hideomi, and goes out of the room. The Chairman says she's just cranky since she's in her late 30's and, unlike her little sister and middle brother, she has no suitors; Conan thinks to himself that with such a bad personality, she'll never marry.
Later they receive a call from Mitsuaki, the chairman's son-in-law, saying that he was attacked by a man wrapped with bandages. Later, they see someone who seems to be the eldest son Hideomi (a novelist who covers his face with bandages)holding a knife in his mouth... and Mitsuaki is found stabbed through the spike fence.

Later that night, Nobuko reveals a family secret. Around 20 years ago, there was fire in a nearby lodge; the highschool-aged Mitsuaki and Hideomi passed by, and despite Mitsuaki's objections Hideomi went into the burning buildig to see if there were any survivors. He managed to rescue the little daughter of the owners of the lodge, but in exchange he was left with heavy scars on half his face. She finishes the tale by revealing that the little girl is Miyuki Hyuga.
On the second day, Nobuko and Miyuki have a fight about Hideomi, who has gone missing. Nobuko is so angry that she slaps Miyuki across the face, and causes her fountain pen (the last present that she recieved from her parents) to fall in the nearby fountain. The water of the pond is drained... and Hideomi's corpse is found there.
Suicide? | |||||||||||
|
It seems the cause of death is poisoning instead of drowning, and soon a suicide letter by Hideomi (directed to his girlfriend Miyuki is found). Miyuki cries as she finds out but Nobuko doesn't believe her, since she thinks Miyuki is just a gold digger.
Part 2
Conan and Heiji decide to pursue the clues pointing at the incident in the past. The clues allow them to solve the murder, but they also allow Ran to come closer to the truth about Shinichi. Can Heiji help Shinichi keep his secret?

Trivia
- Conan makes a reference to his past failure to stop a suicide in "Moonlight Sonata Murder Case" when telling Heiji that letting a person commit suicide when it can be stopped is the same as killing the person oneself.
Manga to anime changes
- In the manga, Conan replaced the gasoline that the killer intended to use by emptying the geyser. In the anime, he replaced the gasoline with water.
