Detective Conan Wiki:Discussion

Please use this page for general wiki discussion. If you wish to talk about a specific page, please do so on that article's Discussion page.

Episodes

Each episode will have its own page. The page name will be that of the Japanese name of the episode. For example, episode 1's page will be Roller Coaster Murder Case. You may also create a redirect from the English name of the episode to the Japanese one. In our example, The Big Shrink will redirect to Roller Coaster Murder Case. --Maurice 17:51, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

I presume it will be the same with Japanese and English names of characters, as well? CarpetCrawlermessage me 18:43, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Namespaces and Spoiler

Hi over there... I just want to make you think about the namespaces. This page is a page of the Wiki, so it is no article. That's why this page should be in the namespace "Detective Conan Wiki" like Detective Conan Wiki:Episode needed. If this page rests in the article-namespace, the number of articles is higher than the real articles in this wiki and visitor, who click on random page will find this pages, too.

Another point, I want to say to you, are the spoilers. Like in the german wiki, you can spoiler everything, that is not already known in the american manga. In the german wiki, we already use spoilers, seen here on a full page or here on a part of the page. Maybe, you might also use spoilers to hide information. Just an idea... Philipp S. 17:43, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Good point regarding the namespace. It was one of the first article created and that would explain why we didn't think about moving it to the proper namespace later on. So, thank you for noticing this! ^^ As for the spoiler issue, it's a more sensitive case. The thing is that the US version of the series is so far off behind that most fans from the US and Canada simply follow the subbed Japanese version and/or read the manga over the net (I'm guessing the German version is probably much more ahead than the US dubbed version?). Since both the subbed episodes and manga are up-to-date with the Japanese versions, it seems that most people in North America (and around the world for that matter) have a pretty good grasp of the "Japanese" background and standing of the series. Thus, hiding a full page just to prevent spoiling might be a little too much in my opinion. However, we do provide spoiler tags for the resolution part of episode pages as can be seen in Roller Coaster Murder Case (although it's still work in progress). :) I thank you again for your inputs though. They're very much appreciated! ^_^ --Maurice 02:24, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
You maybe might also move the Guide and the Projects... The spoilers were just an idea. I know, that the USA only have 32 volumes at the moment, in Germany, there are already 63. So, we are quite close to the japanese version. And because of the fact, that many german readers don't know the japanese version, we spoil informtion :) As I said to you, it was only an idea ;) Philipp S. 06:49, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Ki'ichiro Numabuchi

I request we move Kichiro Numabuchi to either Kiichiro Numabuchi or Ki'ichiro Numabuchi, because spelling it as Kichiro gives the impression his name is pronounced kee-chee-roh rather than kee-ee-chee-roh, which is correct. Double i's (as well as double a's) are tricky in Japanese names. Sometimes they're one syllable (like double o's and u's usually are), but usually they're two syllables. NakagawaRyou 04:18, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Yeah... sorry about ignoring this at his page. ^^' Hectic few days, so I've been going loco everywhere. I'm guessing that it IS spelled "Kichiro," but it has an accent over the first "I?" Anyway, I prefer "Ki'ichiro Numabuchi". What does everyone else think? CarpetCrawlermessage me 04:33, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
No, the accent would be for the former case, if it were pronounced as one syllable. Because the kee and ee are instead two different syllables, it would usually be romanized with both i's. The English Wikipedia usually does it this way, for instance. NakagawaRyou 04:39, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
Ahhh, OK. Thanks for the clarification. CarpetCrawlermessage me 04:52, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
Let's have a vote on this.

Vote

  • Ki'ichiro Numabuchi is my choice. What does everyone else think? CarpetCrawlermessage me 23:20, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
  • I second Ki'ichiro Numabuchi. NakagawaRyou 05:45, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
OK, I'll make the name change. CarpetCrawlermessage me 06:00, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Page proposition

I believe that we should have a page on this wiki specifically for seiyu's. I know that the anime section has one, but I mean a specific page, with maybe a table where we can display a picture of the seiyu in the table, with their name and what notable characters they voice? This is just an idea that I'd like to propose. CarpetCrawlermessage me 06:00, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

I have no objections, of course. NakagawaRyou 06:28, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Maybe like this one. Philipp S. 10:07, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
That's actually quite similar to what I was thinking of. At first, I wanted to put it on the Characters page, but I thought it would make it too clunky, so then I thought maybe it could be a subpage for Anime, or be linked to the Character's page? CarpetCrawlermessage me 17:48, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Just gotta make sure we can do it in a way that allows us to display more than one seiyu for such cases (not just Kogoro, but Shiratori, Yoko, and Chief Tooyama as well). NakagawaRyou 17:54, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
It's a good idea. However, I think that if we add it to the sidebar it should be called something like "Cast" or "Actors" or "Voice actors" instead of "Seiyu" since a lot of the visitors won't guess right away what this is about. Pages should be as intuitive as possible to ease the reading experience. Also, besides that new page, we could add two new columns to the Characters page for "Japanese voices" and "English voices". How does that sound? But in any case, it's also a yes for me. --Maurice 21:59, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Culture in the Detective Conan canon

I was wondering about this when I was looking over the character checklist, I think we should make a page with a section on each of the soccer players (Like Hide and such,) and probably put it under some sort of topic like a "Culture in the Detective Conan canon" article, like with Gomera and Kamen Yaiba, and other things. Something like that. CarpetCrawlermessage me 05:45, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Ryou also proposes that we create an article for Tropical Land, which is a part of my idea above, so I think we should centralize the discussion to this message. :) CarpetCrawlermessage me 05:03, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Shit, I put it on the wrong talk page, didn't I? NakagawaRyou 05:06, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
I agree an article on Tropical Land should be created. I'd also like to suggest having articles for other popular settings as well, such as the Mouri Detective Agency, Teitan High School, and the Poirot Coffee Shop. --skyechan
No, don't worry about it, Ryou. ;) And skyechan, yeah, I had something like that in mind as well. An article with a section on each place. Other places including the MPD office would be a good idea as well. And we can even list the characters that are known to frequent those places? Like for Teitan High School, you can put Ran, Sonoko, Shinichi, Eisuke, Jodie, and Araide, as well as others that I probably forgot. ^^ CarpetCrawlermessage me 07:05, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
I also think it's a great idea! We just need to figure out the best way to present/reach the information. What about a new list item in the sidebar called "Culture" or "Milieu" or "Setting" or... any suggestions? (One word preferred, 2 max). --Maurice 05:35, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
Why not both "Setting" and "Culture"? There are several reccuring locations in the series and Japanese culture frequently appears throughout the series (Fuu Rin Ka Zan, Rooster Festival, Yoshitsune, etc.). Plus, culture could also cover general settings like Osaka, Gunma Prefecture, and such. NakagawaRyou 06:26, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
That is a good idea, IMO. CarpetCrawlermessage me 06:10, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Magic Kaito "The Crystal Mother" Chapter: A Proposal

As you may or may not know, fellow Magic Kaito readers, there is a chapter of the manga that is currently not translated, most likely because people believe that the 4th OVA, Conan and Kid and the Crystal Mother, did a better job of the story. However, skyechan and I were both discussing an interesting idea, and a great idea to get this Wiki a lot more publicity. How about the guys at the Detective Conan Wiki (Or, DCW Wiki,) work together to translate the chapter, and release it as DCW or Detective Conan Wiki? It would not only be great to finally get this chapter released, as there are differences between the manga and the anime adaptation, but it would be great publicity for this Wiki, as we will be publishing this for all Conan and Kaito fans everywhere.

So basically, what does everyone think of this idea? I've already talked to a few people about this, and they have agreed that this is a great idea. However, I'd like to see what everyone else thinks.

Positions

So far, these are the positions that would need to be filled, IF we were to go ahead with this project.

Translator: Abs.

Editors: CarpetCrawler and NakagawaRyou

Rought Draft: sky

QC (Quality Checking, this means that you look over the almost finished project, and see if you still spot any grammatical or spelling errors, or general errors.): Maurice

Final Version: sky

Conclusion

I have already been encouraged by a few people, including some people in the Detective Conan fandom, to go ahead and do this project, so I believe that we should do this. Does anyone else agree? Also, would anyone like to help out in this project? Everyone's answers are definitely encouraged. CarpetCrawlermessage me 22:21, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

OK, we can do this

I have found a translator, so now we can begin the work on this! Escargotpudding told me that she would be glad to do the translations, which will begin in two weeks, as she will be away for Christmas. skyechan told me that she wanted to see the omake chapters done by DCW as well, but that might be too much to do, because EP is a very busy person in general, so we'll try to find another translator for those, if we can. But anyway, in a few weeks we'll be able to start up this project, so let's all do our best, and make this a fun project!! :D CarpetCrawlermessage me 18:29, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Awesome news!! :D Once we have some content and/or we've moved enough through the project, I can create a section on the website to promote the project and let people know about the release (or we could wait until we have a final release?). So, is Escargotpudding living in Japan? (I can presume she's Japanese at least right? ^^). And has she done translations/scanlations before? In any case, that's great news! --Maurice 18:35, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

::I'd like to wait until we've done enough work before we announce anything, honestly, because if an emergency happens and we can't do it, I'd rather not disappoint. I'd rather wait until some editing or the rough draft is complete before we say anything anywhere. EP is Japanese, but lives in the US, and she has a ton of experience in fansubs translating various episodes, editing episodes, and translation checking episodes. She's the best person you could have on the job. :) CarpetCrawlermessage me 09:13, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Our original translator has decided to not do the project, leaving us back at square one. I'll see if we can find anyone, though help is appreciated. CarpetCrawlermessage me 23:16, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
Watch this space... CarpetCrawlermessage me 07:42, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
We now have a new translator. I would like to thank Abs. of DCTP for providing the time to translate the chapter, and the omake chapters. Looking forward to finally seeing this get greenlit! CarpetCrawlermessage me 09:22, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Status update. "Final edits phase, but a few lines I won't be satisfied with until I let them cook for a while." -- Abs. CarpetCrawlermessage me 21:26, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Episodes Writer and Director

Hello, I'm just wondering if anyone knows a reliable source that can indicate who wrote/directed certain episodes of the series. Ex, Episode 501 was written by Huruuti Kazunari and directed by Masahiro Hosoda. I couldn't find a reliable source indicating this anywhere and was hoping someone here would have it. Thanks. DragonZero 09:50, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Err, hate to say it but your kanji readings are entirely incorrect. The screenplay was done by Kazunari Kouchi (古内一成 Kouchi Kazunari) and the lead director was Masato Sato (佐藤真人 Sato Masato). The reliable source I use most for my staff contributions on the wiki come from Mouri Kogoro Detective Agency (http://conan.aga-search.com/). --skyechan
Haha, that's google translate for ya. Well I as hoping if there was a source besides Aga-search that is reputable enough to be used as in a featured list candidate. Are there other sources indicating directors and writers? DragonZero 05:03, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
"Koware Site Detective Conan Branch" (http://www.koware.net/) --skyechan
That might do since they have some sources on their directors. I'll have to get it checked out later, anymore? DragonZero 23:14, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Regarding Navigation Box "Fansubs" and "External Resources"

  • Fansubs: Given our recent trouble, is it wise to have links to fansub groups on the side navigation area?
  • External Resources: I vote for the removal of "D-Conan" and "Endless Youth and Company" links. "D-Conan" does not provide any information that cannot be found on AnimeNewsNetwork or our favorite Japanese resource sites; that and it provides downloads of soundtracks. Same reasoning goes for why "Endless Youth and Company" should be removed; it doesn't provide any real useful information that can't be found elsewhere. That said, my suggestions for replacement resource links:
    • "Koware Site Detective Conan Branch" ( http://www.koware.net ) - Japanese resource site. Provides release news, episode and staff listing, etc.
    • "Detective Shinichi.com" ( http://detectiveshinichi.com ) - English resource site. Provides English release news, episode guide, etc. --skyechan
Sounds fair. We can remove "D-Conan" and "Endless Youth and Company" for now. But maybe we'll add them back in the future. --Maurice 00:29, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

About the lyrics and videos on the wiki

I know we've been through some unstable times with the change of host and all that and I understand where the reasoning behind removing the lyrics and song videos is coming from but I want to raise a few points and state my position on the matter.

I believe that there are many radical differences between the videos that were in the watch section and the lyrics/song videos that were here in the wiki. And because of those differences, I do not see the need to censor content from the wiki. Here's my rationale:

  • The main reason FUNi asked for the videos to be brought down is because of the way the Watch section was set up. Let me explain. Sure it was showing videos, but I don't think that was the main issue, because as you know, lots of sites embed Youtube videos (which is also a great way to defer copyright handling responsibilities). The main issue I believe was that there was a "Submit link" option that allowed the community to get involved (although a lot of other sites have the same feature). And because of this feature, we're not just showing videos but promoting their gathering and distributions on a bigger scale. Of course, this is not the case for the wiki where lyrics and videos are added manually for reference only.
  • Lyrics and videos in the wiki are for informational purposes only with no "real" entertaining value besides that of satisfying one's curiosity. To sum up, it won't cause FUNi to make less sales (but possibly more actually since the wiki articles would create awareness in the community and people may end up buying CDs and DVDs for example, etc...).
  • The wiki is a library of knowledge after all and not a marketing tool or a platform which could look like it's highjacking/driving away customers from their products. On the contrary, I believe it's a great way to grow the fanbase which can only be a good thing for everyone.
  • Once you watch an episode, it's true that you may not wish to buy the DVD later on. But reading the lyrics and watching anime openings/closings is an entirely different thing: people will be tempted to buy CDs or, it's true, download the songs, but, again, we're not promoting any digital goods here and we still end up creating awareness. In the end, a great source of free advertisement for the publishers (and licensees, etc...)!

My main point here is that I don't see the need to remove lyrics nor song videos from the wiki. We need not live in fear! The truth is that there are tons of those on many different websites. And we do give credits where it is due. Finally, those lyrics and videos do drive customers in and not away from buying DC merchandise. So, I don't think FUNi would be against it (and most likely never was from the start).

Therefore, my plan is to wait a few more months (3 to 4) and put back the lyrics and video songs on the wiki. That's a risk (if risk there is) I'm definitely willing to take since they do add value to the wiki and make it more appealing and/or interesting.

What do you guys think? --Maurice 00:27, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

It's up to you. It's your wiki after all. ^^; --skyechan
Lol. I don't see it that way though. :) I see it as a community effort (i.e. for the fans by the fans). And as you know, I always value input from the community. ^^ So yeah, I just wanted to hear your opinions and weight the pros and cons, and then take the decision from there as a team. The question I guess is: what about you? How do you feel with this idea of putting back the lyrics and videos? Also, keep in mind that even though it's a small risk to take, if it really gets to that we can always look for another host like we once did (it's not a difficult process fortunately) and from there review our approach + modify/censor content once again if needed. At least we'd know more accurately what's ok or not --Maurice 17:12, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

How should I incorporate the MK Chapters?

Just for the heck of it, I thought that for the characters that appeared in Magic Kaito, that I would add which MK Chapters they appeared in. I decided to start with Juzo Megure as the character appeared in Volume 4. This is the result:

Volume 3, File 3: Black Star Volume 4, File 4: Black Star

So, should I just add these in the regular manga sections and list them as Magic Kaito mangas? Antiyonder 23:06, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Yeah it won't show like the other ones because the system used is actually a custom wiki extension created for DCW. I would have to modify the plugin so that it recognizes the "mkmanga" tag (or something similar). I'll see if I can work on that sometime this week. ^^ Thanks for the edits btw! --Maurice 01:37, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Ayako and Tomoko Suzuki should have their own pages too

I wish there were pages for Sonoko's sister, Ayako and also her mother, Tomoko. There are more obscure characters with their own seperate pages. Thanks!

Pages for these characters are indeed being planned out. CarpetCrawlermessage me 19:34, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Latest Featured Detectives

I'm having trouble finding out who the latest Featured Detectives are, so if anyone can help, here's what I have:

  • Volume 66: Detective/仙波阿古十郎 (Senba ??), Author/久生十蘭 (Juran Hisao), Story/遠島船 (Exiled Ship?)
  • Volume 67: Detective/茨木歓喜 (Kanki Ibaraki), Author/山田風太郎 (Futaro Yamada), Story/十三角関係 (30-sided realtionship?)
  • Volume 68: Absolutely nothing

Needless to say, I also can't find the latest keyholes... NakagawaRyou 19:21, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

I'll ask around and see what I can find. CarpetCrawlermessage me 00:42, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Here is all I found, the person on the keyhole of volume 68 is Samizu Kichiemon. I told a friend of mine, and they will let me know if they find anything else. CarpetCrawlermessage me 04:49, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Detective in volume 66 is Senba Agojuurou. CarpetCrawlermessage me 22:53, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
