General

Articles in general

Some important rules:

  • Try to include categories (i.e. using [[Category:Name of category]]) when creating a new article (use other similar articles as example to know which categories to put). If, when previewing, the category name appears in red or if you're unsure, please do not try creating new categories unless you know what you're doing. A moderator or experienced contributor will take care of them.
  • Try to always include a See also section if possible (and/or applicable). It's good practice for user-friendliness purposes (as it provides a useful and extra mean of navigation).
  • The References section should always be placed after the See also section but before the External links section.
  • If there's an External links section, it should always be placed at the end completely (i.e. last section on the page).

Capitalization

For section headers:

  • Only the first letter as well as people names should be capitalized.
  • Though quite rare, in some context, some common words may be capitalized (possibly following a discussion/talk about it).

In category names:

  • The first letter of the first word should be capitalized.
  • Common words should not be capitalized. Examples: "Kudo family", "List of something", etc...
  • Some words that refer to people should be capitalized such as "Voice Actors", "Executive Producers", etc...

Naming convention

Even though Japanese names are usually given with the last name placed first, people's names in this wiki should follow the format:

  • Given_name Last_name

References

If citing manga chapters or anime episodes (or movie, OVA, etc...), please point to the corresponding wiki page of that chapter or episode. The format is as follows:

  • For manga chapters:
  • For manga chapters not yet in a Volume, there must not be links to the chapters (this will ensure we easily catch this citation later on when they become part of a Volume):
    • File X: Title
    • Example: File 763: The Ghost of Time
  • For episodes:

If using a "name" variable for the references, please use the following:

  • For manga files:
    • <ref name="fXpY"> (the pY is optional). "f" and "p" stand for "File" and "page" respectively. Example: <ref name="f433">, <ref name="f100p8">.
  • For anime episodes:
    • <ref name="eX">. "e" stands for "Episode". Example: <ref name="e501">.

Characters

New character articles

Here are the characteristics, by order of importance, to look at when justifying the creation of a character's profile:

  1. The character is a main protagonist
  2. The character is a major recurring character
  3. The character is a minor recurring character (2 appearances or more)
  4. The character is part of a main organization such as the Police, the Black Organization, school body, etc...
  5. The character has had an impact on the storyline such that said impact spans more than one episode (or movie, etc...)

Profiles

The following is a global overview of the generic article structure when creating character pages. Blue statements emphasize important points.

Order Section Optional? Description Notes
1 Background The background section should contain a concise and precise overview of:
  • The character's past and younger days.
  • How the character was introduced in the series (more details can be given later in the Plot overview section).
  • The role of the character and how important he/she is in the series, his/her ties to his/her family/close friends, his/her impact on the storyline and more.
  • Events or incidents that changed the character in a substantial, major or radical way (more details can be given later in the Plot overview section).
  • Personal history, activities, achievements and the like, known or associated to the character.
  • The goal of this section is to present the character to a "supposed first-time reader" so that he/she can easily place the character into the context and storyline of the series and understand his/her role and importance.
  • Subsections of substantial importance may be created.
2 Personality For canon and/or main characters:
  • Description of the general "feeling" emanated by the character from our point of view as well as the other characters'.
  • Qualities and flaws of the characters may be presented in details.
  • Any relevant information that pertains to the character's personality (or the influence it's had on others or the environment).

For non-canon and/or minor (recurring or important enough to mention) characters:

  • This section should describe at the very least the impression the character made from the viewer's point of view while or after being introduced.
  • Any other relevant detail is welcome.

4 Plot overview Yes Present in a chronological order (broken down in subsections) the series of events in which the character was involved (directly or indirectly).   • Forking is also allowed if the subsection is too big.
  • Relationship analysis should always come after the Background, Personality, Plot overview or any other section that directly pertain to the character itself. It is essential to first present the character him/herself then his relationships with others (i.e. from specific to generic).

13 References Yes (if citations used throughout the article) References to cited sources. Please follow the format given in References.

Episodes, Movies, OVAs and TV Specials

The following is a global overview of the generic article structure when creating character pages. Blue statements emphasize important points.

Unlike other types of pages where spoilers are displayed openly, on Episodes, Movies, OVAs, TV Specials, and Manga Volumes, spoilers are hidden for the benefit of readers who don't want to know the answer. Therefore, when making crime boxes or adding details to people sections, please use the "Watson" perspective of what is going on in a case (basically what the police think) instead of the "Sherlock" perspective. If culprit was explicitly shown (the case is a howdunnit rather than a whodunnit) it is okay to list the culprit, but don't spoil how the crime was committed. The general rule of thumb is to hide any information that is part of a big reveal at the end, like the fact that X is the murderer, or Y is a member of the Black Organization. All that information and spoilers goes in the resolution section inside of the spoiler box.

Describe the new character or gadget in a few words within the corresponding templates.

2 Cast List the characters that appear in the coresponding video by using the {{Char Appearances}} template. For very long arcs with multiple cases where the cast changes significantly like Clash of Red and Black or The Crisis Beckoned by the Red Omen, consider using multiple cast lists for each major part.
3 Case (or Case: Title) This section is broken down into several parts as shown below. It is possible to have more than one case in the same episode (or movie, etc...). If so, having many Case sections (enumerated like "Case 1" or "Case: Title of 1st case") is possible.
3.1 Situation Add one or many crime boxes pertaining to the current case by using the {{InfoBox Crime}} template. See below for the image guidelines. We want to be as clear as possible here. So it is important we dedicated one box per specific crime or crime attempt so that more precise details can be given and the reader doesn't get lost or confused.
3.2 People List people related to or involved in the case using the {{People}} and {{BeginBox}} (for wrapping all of the people's thumbnails together to avoid a broken layout structure) templates.

Describe in a few words each of the character when using the {{People}} template. Label the victim(s) as well. Omit information about people only revealed as part of the resolution of cases to avoid spoilers. Don't list people who only appear as part of the resolution ; those people are listed in the spoilered section.

3.3 Resolution Describe in details the resolution of the case by exposing in 3 points (or more) the:
  • Evidence
  • Conclusion
  • Motive
 Use the <spoiler> tags to hide the whole resolution section to give the reader the option to dig in further or not. List anyone who couldn't be listed in the people section above because it would be spoilers in this section.

Season pages

Season pages list episodes according to an approximation of the Japanese DVDs, referred to as "Parts".

i.e. Season 1 contains Episodes 1-28 because Part 1 of the Japanese DVDs does as well.

Manga volumes

Unlike other types of pages where spoilers are displayed openly, on Episodes, Movies, OVAs, TV Specials, and Manga Volumes, spoilers are hidden for the benefit of readers who don't want to know the answer.   • Staff - List of the animation staff that worked on the animation for this particular opening/ending.
  • FUNimation version - If the opening/ending was changed somehow for the English release of the show, list that information here.
2 Song info The Song info section should contain the following sub headers and information:
  • Chart placement - List the songs Oricon chart rankings.
  • Lyrics - All lyrics placed on the page should use the lyrics template (see Mune ga DOKIDOKI for example) and have the lyrics placed in this order: Romaji, English, Kanji, and English dub (if available).

Use the full version of each lyric set when possible. If you did not transcribe or translate the lyrics yourself please be sure to credit the appropriate people and provide references.

3 CD info The CD info section should contain the following sub headers and information if available:
  • CD track listing - List the tracks found on the CD. Create another sub header if a limited edition version is available (see Don't Wanna Lie for example).
  • Gallery - Scans/images of the front cover, back cover, and CD.
4 Trivia Yes List of minor or trivial facts of interest.
5 See also Point to the Music page and any other page that may be relevant to the article.

Galleries

  • A soft maximum number of 25 images can be added to a page's gallery per 30 minute episode, 15 being a good average number. This is to avoid legal issues associated with uploading too much of a copyrighted work. Any multiple of 5 (below or equal to 25) is acceptable: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.

Minor recurring character pages and notable case characters pages

Currently there are three pages about minor characters: List of minor recurring manga characters, List of minor recurring anime characters, and List of notable case characters.

A minor character is any character who recurs or has a key role in an important case which impacts the plot (e.g. Matsuda Jinpei), but is not important enough to warrant a spot on the main characters page. That means the minor character lists are not for main characters, main law enforcement, or mystery people related to the arc (e.g. Eisuke or Araide). Minor characters may have their own article, which should be linked in the relevant minor character page.

There is some wiggle room for who qualifies as a notable character, but one that has a major impact on the plot (e.g. Hikaru Yasumoto for being relevant to the Vermouth arc's solution), is a love interest (e.g. Fusae Campbell), or considered notable by fans (e.g. Natsuki Koshimizu and Junya Tokitsu for being the highschool detectives of the North and South) are all good candidates. Not every character who is spotlighted in an episode or chapter will count.

Recurring characters

The definition of "recurring" is a character who 1) has two or more major appearances and 2) those appearances are in two separate mostly unlinked cases.

A major appearance is one that is in person, an extended flashback, or some other notable form. Basically the appearance itself must be substantial or otherwise worthy of some note. A situation where a character appears just by name or in one panel while being mentioned doesn't count as a recurrence even though it may be listed on the appearances page. Natsue and Takeshi Hatamoto's letter in File 215: The Northbound Train qualified them for recurring because their interaction with the case was fairly substantial - their letter provided additional details about what happened to them after their initial case and prompted Kogoro and co. to travel on the train where the case took place.

Some cases that are separate, but not unlinked enough for a character to count as recurring are Ran Girl and Shinichi Boy, Chinatown Deja Vu in the Rain and Shinichi Kudo's New York Case, and Parade of Malice and Saint and The Trembling Police Headquarters: 12 Million Hostages. These continue smoothly into one another (even though the anime split the last pair apart with an AO). When in doubt, the manga version of the cases is what decides whether cases are linked or unlinked.

Entries are not duplicated between the lists. Although most recurring manga characters also recur in the anime when their manga-based episodes air, those characters are only included on the recurring manga characters list. If a character is qualified to be listed on multiple pages, they should be listed only on the top page they qualify for. The order of the pages top to bottom is:

List of minor recurring manga characters is the most exclusive page: only characters who reappear in at least two separate mostly unlinked cases in the main manga canon are allowed on the list. Only characters who recur in Gosho's main manga canon are allowed on this list, appearances in Detective Conan Special manga and other non-canon works do not count as "manga based".

  • Sometimes the animators change or add characters when adapting a manga case to the anime. Characters who only appear in the anime adaptation of a case, but not in the corresponding manga do not count as a manga appearance. For example, the named police officers that appeared in the anime version of the Be on Guard on a Sweet Date/Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 5 case were not named and drawn mostly generically in the manga version. These named officers from the anime thus don't count for a manga-based appearance because they didn't actually appear in the print manga. Those officers can qualify for anime recurrence though.
  • A character who appears just once in manga canon (and then does not reoccur), but has multiple appearances in the anime or movies goes on the recurring anime page, not the recurring manga page. That is because the character does not occur at least twice on the canon ink and paper.

List of minor recurring anime characters covers appearances in both the movies and the anime. A character that appears at least once in the anime and also at least once in a movie qualifies. Appearances outside of anime and movie canon (such as Detective Conan Special) don't count for the purposes of the this page.

Notable characters

List of notable case characters covers anyone else who doesn't fall in either of the other lists because they don't reoccur, or because they notably reoccur in some other Detective Conan media that isn't manga, anime, or movie.

There is some wiggle room for who qualifies as a notable character, but one that has a major impact on the plot (e.g. Hikaru Yasumoto for being relevant to the Vermouth arc's solution), is a love interest (e.g. Fusae Campbell), or considered notable by fans (e.g. Natsuki Koshimizu and Junya Tokitsu for being the highschool detectives of the North and South) are all good candidates.
